  64.                       How to use Rosenthal History
  65.  
  66. First copy the files from your distribution diskette, CD-ROM or archive to 
  67. the root directory of your hard disk. 
  68.

  72. Rosenthal  History  shares information with Rosenthal UnInstall  (tm)  and 
  73. Rosenthal  System Monitor (tm). All versions of DOS 3.1 -7 and  MS-Windows 
  74. including Win95 are supported.
  75.  
  76. Operation is totally automatic and no input is required of the user.  When 
  77. used  with  Rosenthal  UnInstall or the registered  version  of  Rosenthal 
  78. System  Monitor  this  RE_HIST.EXE  is  executed  automatically  and   its 
  79. operation is almost completely transparent to the user. Whenever Rosenthal 
  80. UnInstall updates or purges files, it will also execute Rosenthal  History 
  81. to maintain a running timeline history of additions changes and  deletions 
  82. of your system files.

  84. When  used  with Rosenthal System Monitor, Rosenthal History  will  review 
  85. your  system  files each time you start the system. Rosenthal  History  is 
  86. extremely  fast and will only add updates to your  timeline  (RE_HIST.DAT) 
  87. file as required no matter how often it is run.

  90. using  Rosenthal History in combination with Rosenthal System  Monitor  on  
  91. clients systems before they encounter difficulties is extremely helpful to

  104. Comments  begin  with  ";"  and any changes  are  shown  with  a  complete 
  105. description  of  what was done, the date and time and the  file  that  was 
  106. changed. The indented outline format makes it easy to see exactly what has 
  107. happened  and  when.  When  a line of  your  system  file  gets  modified, 
  108. Rosenthal  History will show very clearly when and where, as well as  what 
  109. the  line  used  to  be  and what is was  changed  to.  Clearly  and  well 
  110. commented.

  113. mystery  out of your DOS and Windows system files. You can then  use  your 
  114. plain  text  editor to changes you would never have attempted  before  and

  374.                       How to use Rosenthal UnInstall

  376. First copy the files from your distribution diskette, CD-ROM or archive to 
  377. the root directory of your hard disk. 
  378.  
  379.                For example:

  382. Rosenthal Uninstall will work in both a DOS or MS-Windows (including Win95 
  383. and  NT)  environment. That's an important feature, because  if  for  some 
  384. reason  you install a new program which makes changes that causes  Windows 
  385. to  crash, you'll need Rosenthal UnInstall to remove it and  restore  your 
  386. system  files even though Windows may be inoperative. Rosenthal  UnInstall 
  387. can remove some very nasty installations.
  388.  
  389. Rosenthal UnInstall is designed to remove all versions of Windows software 
  390. including  3.1,  Win95,  NT.  However  it  is  not  dependent  on  Windows 
  391. functioning  and  will  work  independent  of  your  memory,  network  and 
  392. multitasking managers, mouse and graphics drivers.
  393.  
  394. It's important that your system's time and date are correctly adjusted, so 
  395. please take a moment to make any corrections before proceeding.
  396.  
  397. The  first time you run Rosenthal UnInstall, it will prompt you  to  enter 
  398. your  full name, and your registered serial number. Don't  take  shortcuts 
  399. when entering your real name correctly; you will need to know exactly  how 
  400. it was entered should you require technical support and upgrades. 
  401.  
  402. This software may be used without a serial number for a limited evaluation 
  403. period  before  paying  the  required registration  fee.  If  you  have  a 
  404. registered copy, enter the serial number exactly as it appears printed  on 
  405. the distribution diskette for each new version when prompted. To try  this 
  406. software  without  a  registered serial number, just press  ENTER  at  the 
  407. serial number prompt. 
  408.  
  409. Registered  users  receive  the latest version of  this  program  and  the 
  410. unregistered  software  to evaluate listed in the  TRY_THIS.DOC.  See  the 
  411. ORDER.FRM  file for details. Additionally, users receive the  very  useful 
  412. bonus  utility "Rosenthal History (tm)" free with their paid  registration 
  413. or upgrade.

  415. Rosenthal  Uninstall will map each disk drive as it is logged.  Any  drive 
  416. with read and write access will work including network, fixed,  removable, 
  417. PCMCIA, ram-card and an unlimited number of floppy diskettes. 
  418.  
  419. Execute  "UNINSTAL.EXE"  before adding each new  software  package.  After 
  420. you've installed and evaluated the new software, you can elect to keep  it 
  421. by  selecting  the "U - Update" function. The map is the updated  and  the 
  422. current time and date are recorded.
  423.  
  424. Accepting  added software with the "U - update" option also  displays  any 
  425. identical copies on the same disk that may already exist. "U - Update"  or 
  426. "P  - Purge" software before adding anything new. Software that  has  been 
  427. added  to  the  map  using the "Update" function  can  latter  be  removed 
  428. selectively by file name using the "P - Purge" function.
  429.  
  430. To  remove unwanted software, the "P - Purge" function must be  displayed. 
  431. To  display the function, first  log (or re-log) the disk drive using  the 
  432. "L - Logged drive change" function.
  433.  
  434. Newly  created  files  display  their  date  and  time  stamps.  You   may 
  435. selectively   "E  -Exempt" files from the removal list. If  you  elect  to 
  436. exempt a file from being purged that resides in a directory that is listed 
  437. for  removal,  the directory is automatically exempted as well.  The  text 
  438. contents  of files being considered for exemption can be  displayed  using 
  439. the "D-Display" option.
  440.  
  441. When  you elect to "P - Purge" newly installed software that has  modified 
  442. the  AUTOEXEC.BAT,  CONFIG.SYS,  WIN.INI, SYSTEM.INI  files  and  Registry 
  443. USER.DAT and SYSTEM.DAT files are restored automatically. 
  444.  
  445. When  software  has  been added using the "U - Update"  function,  it  can 
  446. latter  be removed selectively by file name, again using the "P  -  Purge" 
  447. function.  Enter a file name associated this the application.  Wild  cards 
  448. "*"  can be included in the file name and no drive or path name should  be 
  449. included. For example "FILE*.*" will search every directory on the  logged 
  450. drive. When a match is found it will be displayed along with the date  and 
  451. time  of  when it was added to the map. "D - Display" will  show  all  the 
  452. files  added at each session. Again, you can "E - Exempt" any you want  to 
  453. keep.  This is especially true of files that are shared by other  programs 
  454. like run time libraries and .DLL's.
  455.  
  456. Software  that  has  not yet been added to the map  using  the  "U-Update" 
  457. function  can  be completely uninstalled and the  systems  files  restored 
  458. automatically.  When  software is selectively purged at a latter  date  by 
  459. file  name, the system files may need to be restored manually  using  your 
  460. ASCII  file  editor. The program "Rosenthal History (tm)"  will  show  the 
  461. changes  that  were  made to your system files  so  editing  system  files 
  462. becomes very straight forward and quite simple.
