OIL IMPERIUM
Crackedypoos by The Alien, don't ya know.
This lil' ol' game works in monochrome too, you betcha! If y'all have any
troubles loadin it like, then jus hol' down that lil' ol' Left Shift key
during that ol' loading sequence!
Hey, reLINE! Ya don't want me spread the lil' ol' proggy, then put some
half-decent protectionez in!
(Right, that's it- I can only hold the accent so long!)
INSTRUCTIONS
After loading, you choose the number of players. If less than the full 4
are selected, the computer plays the rest.
Enter your name(s) and company logo(s) and then choose the game objective:
1. Richest after 3 years
2. Get more than $60 million bucks liquid assets
3. Wipe out all other players (for all you budding J.R.s)
4. Own 80%+ of available oilfields
Now the game begins. Each player has one month to do all his wheeling and
dealing. Buy/sell oilfields and storage tanks, sell oil, carry out studies,
sabotage the others, employ detectives, drill for oil, lay pipelines...
whatever.
When all players have completed their turn, a screen showing progress
appears. Major events appear in a scrolling printout.
GENERAL INFORMATION
The game is controlled by clicking on icons. To close a window, click OUTSIDE
it. To change numeric values, click on the adjacent arrows. OK confirms any
selection.
BANKRUPTCY
Any player who is broke, has no oilfields or is in debt more than $5 million
is bankrupt and out of the game.
THE DESK
This is the main menu of the program. Various icons are usable:
CALENDAR (actually on the desk): shows date. Click on it to end your turn
prematurely.
LIQUID ASSETS (dollar sign-$): shows liquid assets
COMPANY NAME (shown as logo): not clickable
Bordering the screen...
SUITCASE: take action when an oilfield is on fire. The choices are 1.Call
Redhair (groan); click on CONTRACT, or 2.Manage fire fighting yourself;
click on AIR TICKET.
TELEPHONE: rings when a major event occurs. Click on the phone to exit a
message.
DRAWER: illegal dealings; employ detectives to protect against sabotage,
or sabotage other players (ACTION). Options of sabotage are 1.Set fire to
oilfields, 2.Rob other player's bank, 3.Blackmail agents who purchase oil
and 4.Blow up oil tanks. For an overview of your dealings, click on BALANCE
SHEET.
MAP OF THE WORLD: gives an overview of global oilfield ownership. The 8 most
important areas can be clicked on to zoom them. The owner company's name is
flashed. If a field is burning, the name is in red. Green means drilling has
stopped and white means it's for sale.
COMPUTER TERMINAL: commercial deals. Buy/sell oilfields by clicking on the
right area of the map, obtain drilling licenses (needed before you can buy
an oilfield). Before buying, it's a good idea to obtain feasibility study
of the required field. Drill for oil by using the DRILLING icon. Either get
(expensive) specialists to do it, or manage it yourself. Storage tanks must
be bought before you produce any oil. Only put tanks where they're needed!
Build pipelines to get the oil out to be sold. Then sell that oil!
NEWSPAPER: keep up to date on current events or you might just find yourself
outpriced and out of it!
DELIVERY CONTRACTS: these are announced by telephone. Supply the correct
amounts of oil and you'll get your money. Slip up and you'll be fined!
THE COURT OF JUSTICE: if any sabotage is proved, court proceedings start.
The loser loses between 1 and 3 oilfields (1 to the winner, the remainder
to the state, and then the open market). Then there's the fine... Court
actions and results appear in the newspapers and anything involving you
will come over the telephone.
ACTION SEQUENCES (at last, some less boring bits!)
(apologies to diehard strategists for the above remark! -I'm just a poor old
rabid flight sim/killthealiencommieslimygits type of person)
DRILLING FOR OIL
Newly purchased/previously unused oilfields require drilling before oil
production can start. Joystick controls pressure.
The aim of the sequence is to drill through to the oil as vertically as
possible. If you stray far from the vertical the drill will break! To
prevent any sideward drifting, move the stick in the opposite direction as
soon as you notice it.
Drilling speed is determined by the amount of pressure and the density of
the surrounding strata. Hit FIRE quickly for low pressure, hold FIRE down
to increase pressure. The quicker you do it, the less it costs you, but
high pressure can disintegrate a drill bit...
Drilling an offshore oilfield is easier because there is less intervening
rock between you and the oil.
FIRE FIGHTING
If you've decided to handle the fire yourself, you'll be controlling the
technician who plants the explosives in the rig to attempt to put out the
fire. Don't damage that valuable rig, though!
The higher the flames, the more dynamite is needed. Use the stick to position
the man and FIRE to place a stick of dynamite. Move the man away quickly or
he'll be injured in the explosion. Three injuries, and he's out of it. If
the field status goes into the red, the situtation is critical!
LAYING PIPELINES
Lay the pipeline between point "I" and point "i". Obstacles must be bypassed.
While you lay your pipe, the computer lays one between point "II" and point
"ii". Beat the computer or you won't sell any of the oil. Right mouse button
removes a section, left places it. Click on sections to 'attach' them to the
mouse pointer.
TIPS
Don't sign contracts early on- you won't have enough fields to fulfill them
and you'll end up bankrupt!
3 adjacent fields can be combined to lower running costs.
Fire fighting and drilling can be mighty expensive- and you can probably do
just as good a job yourself.
Make drawings of map areas and fill in study results, etc. on them- easier
than remembering where they all are!
At the start, just buy one oilfield, and one storage tank.
If you attempt to sabotage early on, and are caught, you've had it! You'll
probably lose your only field- but the risk could be worth it- if you succeed
the victim will have little chance of recovery!
LOADING/SAVING/QUITTING A GAME
Click on the icon down the bottom and select load, save or quit (that's a
mini desktop!). Save game files are stored in the SAVEGAME.OI folder.
FIDDLY BITS
To install on a hard disk run HDINSTALL.PRG and follow the prompts.
If you have more than 512K, the extra memory is used to store often used
files- resulting in less disk access.
Hope somebody enjoys the game- not my cup of tea at all!
