NeoDesk 4 README 8/16/94
----------------
Owners of Previous Versions
---------------------------
In order to upgrade to NeoDesk 4 from another version, you should run
INSTALL.PRG, just like the manual suggests. The only difference is that
as INSTALL.PRG runs and copies files, you may get one or more messages
saying "This file already exists". In all cases, you should use the
"Overwrite" button.
If you are concerned about losing the version 3 files, you can make a
backup of all of the files first.
Notes for Geneva 003 users
--------------------------
If you have purchased Geneva and NeoDesk 4 together at the same time, it
is probably easier to install NeoDesk first, and then Geneva. This is
because Geneva's INSTALL.PRG will handle the setup for having NeoDesk
run automatically whenever you reboot the computer.
If you have already installed Geneva, you can still install NeoDesk and
then go back and use Geneva's INSTALL.PRG to redo the autoboot program
installation, it's just easier the other way around. The modification to
GEM.CNF which is necessary in order for NeoDesk to autoboot is described
on Page 7 of the NeoDesk manual, if you would rather do it yourself.
There are a few minor problems when using NeoDesk 4 with Geneva release
003, which will be fixed in release 004:
o When NeoDesk is contained in a window and you run a single-tasking
application, you may get a blank menu bar when quitting the
application. This can be cleared up by pressing [Alternate][Tab].
o NeoDesk 4 will actually patch a few other problems in 003 so that all
programs (as well as NeoDesk) will benefit. You must have run NeoDesk 4
at least once in the current session in order for these changes to
occur:
1. Clicking with the mouse on objects drawn with Atari-style 3D buttons
will work much better (like most of the buttons in Atari Works and
Straight Fax.)
2. Pressing a key in a windowed dialog which does not have an editable
field will not crash the system.
3. An obscure problem having to do with custom windows is fixed.
Also, when using Geneva 004 (or if you run without Geneva at all right
now) you have access to a few additional features in some of NeoDesk's
dialogs:
o The "Windows..." dialog in the "Settings" menu has a new option which
lets you redefine the font used in the Name and Info bars of NeoDesk's
windows.
o Some dialogs which have multiple-line editable fields (like the
Parameters for Execution and Group dialogs) allow you to continue
typing and have the text automatically wrap to the next line when the
end of a line is reached.
o The arrow keys, Backspace, and Delete all wrap to the next or
previous line.
o Pressing [Control][Return] will chop off a line at the cursor
position and move the remainder of the line to the next row.
Notes for Magix! users
----------------------
NeoDesk 4 can be used with Magix!, and can also replace MAGXDESK as the
default shell. To do this, edit the MAGIX.INF file and add the following
line after the #_MAG line:
#_SHL C:\NEODESK4\NEODESK.EXE
(Or whatever the actual path of NEODESK.EXE is.) You also need to run
NEOLOAD.PRG in the AUTO folder.
If you quit NeoDesk, you will get an alert message saying that the
program returned a status of -1. This is the only way for NeoDesk to make
sure that you end up back at MAGXDESK.
