(thisisanotherGemgamespecial)soafterputtingitinto320x240
truecolourmodewemakeasecondattemptathavingsomefun.
Sportingthecorrectresolution,wewaltzintotheintro..A
somewhatchunkyrenderedintropictureofatank-seenfroman
overheadview-isfollowedbyacreditsscreen,usingthesystem
font(oritstwinbrother)againstanice,wibbly,copperybrown
backgroundtexture.Thisinturnisfollowedbytheonly
configurableoption,asyouareaskedtochooseyourvehicle
speedfromthechoiceof:fast,quickandswift(er..aren'tthey
allthesame?-Ed)..translatedthisshouldread:quite
playable,completelyunplayableandtotallyutterlycompletely
unplayable.Butmoreofthatlater.Alsoonthisscreenisthe
'Redrobotspeed',whichisproportionaltoyourownspeed,soifyou
increaseyourspeed,therobotspeedwillautomaticallyincrease
andthegamewillnotactuallybemadeanyeasier.Infact,increasing
yourspeedmakesitharderforyou,butagainmoreofthatlater.
Onceyouhavechosenyourtankspeed,alittlerenderedpicture
ofatankwiththeusual"GetReady"sortofspielisdisplayed.It
haschristenedyou'Buddyboy',soafteraquicktriptothenearest
phoneboxtochangeintoyourcheesysuit,slickbackyourshorthair
withappreciableamountsofspittleandaffixyourblackrimmed
glasses,youpressspaceandalmostenterthegame.Almost..but
thecodercouldnotresistprolongingthesuspense,aenigmatic
Çsentence(perhapspartofthejoke?)isdisplayed:'Doyouknow
whatoldfashionedmeanes?'(sic).Hmm,atthispointwefeelthatare
beingtentativelyprimedNOTtoexpecttoomuch,nottotaketoomuch
seriously.Weceasetoevenexpectthatagamewillemergeoutof
thislabyrinthofintroductionscreens.Andwecertainlywonderifit
willbeworthalltheeffortexpendedtoreachit.Butwithourlast
sparkofpatiencewestrikethemuchabusedspacebarandthegaming
fieldemerges..
..butstillonemoredelayisyettobeendured!asyet
anothersmallpictureofarenderedtankappears,thistimewitha
briefexplanationofwhatyoumustdotocompletethislevel-
collectallthe'blueradioactiveballs'toescapefromearth.
Dismissingthislastdelaywithasnarlofimpatience,weareintothe
game.
Thegamingfieldismostlygreen,onsomepartsarespeckledgreen
squareswhichlooklikesomeonehasscatteredabouteightlightgreen
pixelsonagreenblock.Someoftheseanimateveryoccasionallyand
thesearetheswampsquaresandmustbeavoidedbecauseifyoudrive
ontothemyouwillbeinformedthatyourtankisnotan'amphi-car'
andalifewillbelost.Thetroubleisthattheswampsquareslook
verysimilartonormalsquaresandsoitisdifficulttotellwhatis
swampandwhatisnotandthiscanbefrustrating.
Theblueballsaredistributedaroundthelevel,usuallyplacedin
areasofheavyswampandyoumustdriveyourlittletankaroundthe
leveltoreachthem.Alsoclumpedinclustersaroundthelevelsare
crateswhichyoucanpushinfrontofyourtank,theseareusedin
laterlevelstopushontospecialblocksandconvertthemintoblue
ballswhichcanthenbepickedup.Therearealsoyellowballs
whichhavesomethingtodowithpowerfuel,buttheydidn'tseemtodo
much.Justcollect'emanyway.
Onthefirstlevelthereisalittlespinning,renderedearthin
thecentreofthelevel,anicelittletouch.Andasthelevels
progress,thepuzzleschange,(someofthemhaveadistinctChip's
ÇChallengesfeel)onone,youmustdrivethecorrectwayarounda
'maze'-intheloosestsenseoftheword-becausethegroundyou
driveoverturnstoswamp.Butitissuchatokenmazethatitis
perhapsalittletooeasy.
Theredrobotsemergeafterafewlevels,takingtheformofsquare
blocks.Theysortofhomeinonyouandtryto'restrictyour
mobility',butaresoslowandeasytooutwitthattheymightas
wellbewearingBlackburnshirts.However,Ihavenotseenthemwhen
theyarefaster(i.e.whenyouhaveincreasedyourownspeedandthus
increasedtheirs)sotheymaywellturnintoSheffieldWednesday
Gods..whoknows.
Ihavenotseenspeedyrobotsbecausewhenyouincreaseyour
ownspeed(evenonlyto'quick')yourtankmovesSOquicklythatit
isalmostimpossibletocontrolaccurately(especiallybecausethe
controlsarejoystickonly)andinvariablyyouendupblunderinginto
aswampand/orknockingthatcrucialcrateagainstawallandgetting
itstuck.It'sagoodideatohaveoptionsinagamesothatplayers
canconfigurethegametosuittheirownwishes,buthaving
optionsthatrender(ha-bloody-ha-Ed)agameunplayableseem
alittlepointless.Iftheoptionshadincreasedyourspeedbya
reasonableamount,theywouldhavebeenaniceaddition,butasitis,
theymightaswellnothavebothered;cateringforsuicidalgamers
shouldnotreallybeapriority.
Well,forajokegame,thereismoretothisthanMarkus
Binder'sothergame'SolitarDeLuxe'.Itmaybealittlelacking
graphically,(althoughtherenderedpictureslooknice,therest
ofthegraphicsaredistinctly16colourish)butthegameplayis
definitelytryingtostruggleoutofaGemstraight-jacketand
shout"I'mSane!".Forthepuzzleaddict,Q-Blueisatruebluefind,
somethingofaGem..?
