  26.                           RULES OF THE GAME
  27.  
  28. The basic rules of Five Card  Draw  Poker - the popular American bar-
  29. room and casino game -  are   reasonably   simple, though the tactical
  30. aspects of play are a shade more complex as you will discover.
  31.  
  32. 1. At the start of every hand each player deposits $5 in the pot, your
  33. opening stake.
  34.  
  35. 2. You are then dealt five cards, which form the basis of your hand.
  36.  
  37. The various types of  hand  are  listed  below  in ascending  order of
  38. value:

  55. 3. After assessing the potential of your hand, you can either continue
  56. or DROP, the latter move costing you only your original stake
  57.  
  58. 4. If you decide to proceed with your hand, you will encounter a round
  59. of betting, after which you can change up to 3 cards.
  60.  
  61. 5. The betting then continues until  all  but one of the players Drop,
  62. or all those  remaining  Check  and  expose  their  cards,  either way
  63. producing a winner.

  65.                                CONTROLS
  66.  
  67. Hustler is a joystick driven game that  uses a simple set of commands,
  68. allowing you to concentrate fully on the game. Control of your hand is
  69. communicated through the following basic combinations.
  70.  
  71. To DROP -  Highlight correct panel and press fire-button.
  72.  
  73. To CHECK - Highlight correct  panel  and  press fire-button. This will
  74. cost you the amount featured  in  the  box, though sometimes the value
  75. will be nil if you happen  to  be  the  first  player in the round, or
  76. those before you have declined to make a bet.
  77.  
  78. To BET or RAISE - Highlight correct panel, then press the fire-button.
  79. Moving the joystick UP now allows  you  to increase your bet in stages
  80. between $10 and $25. Pulling DOWN will  lower the amount if you happen
  81. to be a tad too eager.  Once  you  have  settled on your Bet or Raise,
  82. just press the fire-button to confirm.

  84.                             CHANGING CARDS
  85.  
  86. At the appropriate stage of the  hand  a cursor will appear round your
  87. first card. You can now change up to 3 cards, though of course if Lady
  88. Luck has been really kind  you  may  not  wish  to change any. Use the
  89. joystick to move from  card  to  card.  Pull  DOWN  to remove unwanted
  90. cards, or Push UP to restore a card in the event of an error. When you
  91. have finished making your discards, HOLD the fire-button Down and Push
  92. RIGHT. Your new cards, if requested,  will then be dealt.

  94.                            THE COMPETITION
  95.  
  96. Most computer card-games can be fun  for  a while, but eventually they
  97. become predictable and boring.  HOLLYWOOD  HUSTLER  is different. Each
  98. time you play, your computer opponents Joe, Chuck and the one and only
  99. Montana Slim provide you with  a  fresh  challenge, starting every new
  100. game in a different mental state to the last - more or less confident,
  101. more or less likely to bluff etc. So no two games are ever the same!

  103. Wow! You've finally made it  on  to  the  Hi-Score table, huh? Ah, but
  104. watch out next time, because any of these  guys can rob of you of your
  105. proud position and knock you  straight  back  into the cruel depths of
  106. obscurity.

  108. To be a winner at HOLLYWOOD HUSTLER, you will need to be one mean card
  109. player - a genuine Hustler worthy  of  taking on the real Pros. Unlike
  110. standard computer card-games, your opponents  don't  have the power to
  111. cheat - i.e. possess knowledge of your  hand. They don't need to! Once
  112. you've  played  against Montana Slim and  the  boys  you'll  know that
  113. artificial intelligence is here,  and  with  a  vengeance! They watch,
  114. they listen, they analyze, they  bluff...  and in your darkest moments
  115. you could be forgiven  for  thinking  they're  actually... no,  that's
  116. crazy!
