SPECCY GAMES
Hokay, the Speccy games then. In the PROGRAMM folder on this menu are some
more golden oldies for you to enjoy (or laugh your guts out at, depending on
whether you used to own a Spectrum!)... the Spectrum Emulator can be found on
menu 98.
Since the release of menu 98, Agent X has been rather busy and has converted
a load of Speccy games and utilities (such as Laser Genius), and has also
advised me that the Emulator runs slightly more reliably when double-clicked
on the desktop rather than being loaded straight off the menu. Also, the
tape-to-disk transfer program had a slight bug in it that made converting
basic programs unnecessarily difficult. A fixed version is on the root
directory of this menu (SPEC2ST.PRG).
Also, some people had troubles understanding how Spec-to-ST worked, mainly
people who had never owned a Spectrum but had got hold of some games just
out of interest. The program converts files ONE AT A TIME. Tape files consist
of a short header preceeded by a constant tone, a pause, then another constant
tone followed immediately by various wailing sounds. So if you want to convert
every file on a particular tape, you'll have to stop the tape after each file
and re-start it when told to. Please note that many Speccy games, especially
newer ones (i.e. post 1985) use protected loaders, turboloaders, etc. which
the converter cannot handle.
You will notice that some of the games on this disk display the text 'M1
LOADING' while they load. These are games that have been transferred onto
standard tape files using a gadget called the Multiface One on the Spectrum.
A side effect of Multifaced games is that the screen becomes corrupted at the
end of loading - however, this won't affect the game at all. Unfortunately,
such games also need a Multiface plugged in before they will work, and you
obviously can't plug a piece of Spectrum hardware into an ST! However, Agent X
has worked out how to bypass this annoying measure, and so it will now be
possible to convert almost any piece of 48K Spectrum software. Obviously some
games simply don't like the emulator, but I can only ever remember one game
which didn't like the Multiface - Zynaps, and it's a damn shame about that
because it was the best shoot-em-up on the Speccy!
If anyone out there has any requests for particular games, let us know...
Sorry no full docs for these games, but here's some quick guides:
Alien Highway (AlienHiway): Press 3, then 5 to start game with joystick
selected. You have to push a bomb to the end of the game to destroy something
or other. The bomb is the pyramid-like object in front of you at the beginning.
Left and right rotate you, forward and back start and stop you. Fire fires!
Avoid the edges of the screen, flames, bad guys, etc. You can push other
objects as well as the bomb, so make use of them to block bad guys' paths.
Cyberun (Cyberun): Press A, then push left on the joystick twice, then press 0
to start the game. As far as I can remember, the object of this one is to
collect all the parts of your space ship in order to escape from the planet.
Fuel can be found lying around, or dripping from clouds. Standard joystick
controls.
Doomsday Castle (DOOMSDAY): Press 2, then fire. Sorry, I have no idea how to
play this one.
Jet Set Willy II (JSWII): Return starts. It's also a good idea to press Return
again when the game has started to turn off the music and speed things up. The
idea of this one is to collect all the flashing items lying around your mansion
before your housekeeper Maria will let you go to bed.
Manic Miner (MNCMINER): Return starts. Again, press Return to turn off the
music for faster play. O and P are for left and right, 7 to jump. Avoid
pressing other keys as some of them pause the game, and the unpause key doesn't
work! The idea of this, the mother of all platform games, is to collect the
glowing objects before your air runs out, then to get back to the exit (the big
square on the bottom right on the first screen, others are similar). Enjoy this
bloody classic piece of code!
Penetrator (PENETRAT): Hit a key once loaded, then wait for the fireworks,
press Return when the logo begins to draw, wait for the sirens, then press S to
disable them. Now choose whatever option you want. This is a bit of a Scramble
rip off, joystick controls are standard, but press right to fire lasers, press
fire to drop bombs.
Pentagram (PENTAGRM): 2, then 0 to start. Left/right on the stick to change
direction, up to walk forward, down to jump and fire to fire. Sorry, no idea
what the object of the game is. Ignore the other program called PENTAGR3, this
is merely part of the trainer.
Pssst! (PSSST!): 4, then 5 to start. Kill the bugs! There are 3 different types
of spray which have different effects on different bugs. You've got to keep
them from attacking the growing plant. Normal joystick controls.
Pyramid (PYRAMID): Press 2, then fire. You've got to get to the bottom of the
pyramid. Shoot the aliens until the 'A' count at the bottom left gets to 0,
then a diamond will drop down. Wait until it turns blue, then pick it up and
fly over one of the two closed exits at the bottom of the screen. The diamond
will be released to open the exit, then you can drop through to the next
screen.
Zzoom (ZZOOM): Press any key, then Shift twice, then Return. Shoot the planes
and protect the people. Standard aircraft-style controls, but don't dip your
gunsight below the horizon or you'll crash.
Enjoy!
