  1. Thank you for your interest in Search and Replace!
  2.  
  3. Create a directory and copy all the files on disk into it.  If you are running 
  4. Windows 95 or NT, create a shortcut to SR32.EXE.  Windows 3.1x users, add SR.EXE
  5. to a group in the Program Manager.
  6.  
  7. The SR.ZIP file contains the latest version of Search and Replace for Windows (sr.exe), as well 
  8. as the 32-bit version of Search and Replace (sr32.exe).  The 32-bit version runs on Windows NT 
  9. and Windows 95, and was tested on VFAT (Windows 95's file system), and NTFS (Windows NT's 
  10. optional, more secure file system).

  12. PLEASE NOTE: While Search and Replace allows replacing in binary files (such
  13. as .DOC, .XLS etc), these proprietary format files may contain internal 
  14. counters which may get out of synch.  As a result, the application that 
  15. created the file may not be able to read it.  For best results, replace 
  16. in ASCII text files (such as .HTM, .RTF, .TXT, .INI, .C, .CPP, .H etc).

  18. New features in v2.7-2.81 include:
  19. - Script files are stored in ASCII text format for easy editing and printing (using
  20.   any text editor).
  21. - A button was added to the Binary Mode dialog (... button next to Search and
  22.   Replace string fields) to check for \ characters and change them to \\ so that
  23.   they are parsed correctly.  The dialog also checks if any \ characters may need
  24.   to be doubled (\\) and prompts the user to do so.
  25. - Searching through .ZIP archive files.  View Context, Open, Open With and
  26.   Open with Default menus can also act on files inside ZIP files.
  27. - You can prepend or append data (several lines if you want) at the beginning or
  28.   end of the files processed using the Binary Mode dialog (... buttons next to the
  29.   Search and Replace fields).  This feature can also be used with scripts.
  30. - The Script Dialog is larger.  Buttons were also added for Inserting and Moving
  31.   (Up and Down) script lines.
  32. - Write changed files to Backup Directory option now allows you to leave your
  33.   original files intact and write the changed files to the Backup Directory instead.
  34. - Show only File Names option was implemented.
  35. - Buttons for Replace/Skip in current directory were added in the Replace 
  36.   Confirmation dialog.
  37. - Regular expressions to find  (and replace) items "close by" 
  38.   (up to 4096 characters) can be set in options.  The default is 512 characters.
  39. - For the Replace option Prompt on each file, a Cancel button allows you
  40.   to stop the replace at any time.
  41. - The !^$ operators are now supported for regular expressions.  Also the []
  42.   operator now matches only one character in the list specified (to comply
  43.   more with the grep functionality).
  44. - Regular Expressions are now better documented and with more examples
  45.   in the help file.
  46. - Binary Mode dialog (... buttons next to Search and Replace strings) clearly
  47.   display the CR, LF and TAB characters.  Also the help file better explains
  48.   the use of special characters.
  49. - The Windows 95/NT version allows View Context of binary files through a new
  50.   Freeware utility: HexView.  HexView can be downloaded from 
  51.   http://home.sprynet.com/sprynet/funduc.  It should then be installed in the
  52.   same directory as Search and Replace(or in the path or the Windows dir.).
  53. - Scripts can be created to specify multiple search/replace combinations (with
  54.   associated settings) and/or multiple paths and masks to process.  The script 
  55.   settings (masks, paths, search/replace strings) can also be overridden
  56.   from the main screen.
  57. - New command line parameters were added for Touch, Replace and sCript file.
  58.   See help file for more details.
  59. - File Finder feature and collection of file names to process is faster.
  60. - Exclude masks can now be used.  For example: *.*;~*.swp;~*.exe;~*.dll will process
  61.   all but *.swp;*.exe;*.dll files.

  63. Features planned for future releases include:

  65. - Improved Options dialog (tabbed).
  66. - More options for script users such as show only file names with matches, allow
  67.   searching for files containing "string1 AND (string2 OR NOT(string3))" type
  68.   expressions.
  69. - Allow changing the font in the View Context dialog.
