  4. This document contains information you might find useful, and we think will 
  5. help you to get as much enjoyment out of the game as possible.

  23. The following information supplements, clarifies and corrects the manual:
  24.  
  25. * The <F2> key can be used in multi-player mode for chatting.
  26.  
  27. * To split armies, click on the army to split, hold down the shift key,
  28. then click on an empty slot.
  29.  
  30. * The terms used for monster quantities:
  31.    Few      0   to 4
  32.    Several  5   to 9
  33.    Pack     10  to 19
  34.    Lots     20  to 49
  35.    Horde    50  to 99
  36.    Throng   100 to 249
  37.    Swarm    250 to 499
  38.    Zounds   500 to 999
  39.    Legion   1000+

  42. Campaign Game:
  43. You are given the option to select a bonus at the start of Evil 1, 3, 7, 8,
  44. 10, 11, Good 1, 6, 7, 9, 10.  On Evil 2, 4, 5, 6, 9 and on Good 2, 3, 4, 5,
  45. 8 you are given a choice of three different castles to choose from.

  47. Creatures:
  48. Giants (Wizard creature) cost 2000 gold.
  49.  
  50. Structures:
  51. The Mausoleum (Necromancer town) does not require the Pyramid.
  52. The Graveyard upgrade (Necromancer town) does not require the Mage Guild.
  53. The Cloud Castle (Wizard town) requires the Cliff Nest and the Ivory Tower.
  54. The Bridge (Barbarian town) requires the Adobe, Den, and Stick Hut.

  56. System Options:
  57. Video - determines if the video sequences play normally or in interlaced
  58. mode.  Interlaced mode runs better on slower machines or on Double speed
  59. CD-ROM Drives.

  64. 2)   TROUBLESHOOTING
  65.  
  66. The biggest source of troubles when running Heroes 2 are Windows 95 driver 
  67. conflicts.  If you have troubles getting Heroes 2 to run in Win 95, try some
  68. of the following techniques.  As a fallback, you can always run the DOS 
  69. version of Heroes 2, which runs fine under Win 95, and because it 
  70. communicates directly with the hardware, tends to have fewer driver problems.
  71.  
  72. If you have a problem with your sound card, video, or mouse, make sure you
  73. have the latest drivers from the manufacturer.  
  74.  
  75. With some mouse drivers, the mouse leaves trails or does funny things when 
  76. moved.  This can normally be resolved by switching from a black and white
  77. cursor to a color cursor, in the system options window off the main 
  78. adventure screen.
  79.  
  80. If your system has problems playing the video sequences (like those that 
  81. introduce the campaign), try switching to interlaced video, in the system 
  82. options window.  This will also help if the sound hiccups or stutters while
  83. playing the video.
  84.  
  85. If you have problems with the sound, try switching from CD Stereo to MIDI 
  86. music, in the system options screen.  
  87.  
  88. Several people have reported that restoring their original audio
  89. drivers after installing DirectX has helped.  To do this, either open
  90. the DirectX control panel applet and select "Restore Audio Drivers"
  91. or open the "\_SETUP\DIRECTX\DXSETUP.EXE" program on the Heroes 2 CD
  92. and select "Restore Audio Drivers"  You will probably need your
  93. Windows 95 CD to restore the old drivers from.

  96. Hard Drive Space:
  97. The game takes 60 MB of hard drive space, as opposed to the 50 MB listed in
  98. the manual.
  99.  
  100. CD Stereo:
  101. On machines with older CD-ROM drives including Gateway 2000 double speed
  102. drives using CD stereo music may cause frequent crashes.  If your computer
  103. freezes or crashes try changing the music type setting to MIDI in the system
  104. options menu on the adventure screen.
  105.  
  106. Network:
  107. IPX is the preferred protocol in Win 95 to Win 95 network games.  NetBIOS
  108. should be used in DOS to DOS and DOS to Win 95 network games.
  109.  
  110.    A)   WINDOWS 95 VERSION
  111.         1)   Display:
  112.            If you experience problems with you display, you system may have
  113.            a conflict with the drivers installed by Direct X 3.  Consult
  114.            your graphics card manufacturer for the latest drivers.
  115.  
  116.            If the video sequences (i.e. the scenes) is not displaying
  117.            quickly enough, switch your video to Interlaced (System Options,
  118.            Video).  Interlacing lowers the quality of the video slightly to
  119.            speed performance.
  120.  
  121.         2)   Mouse:
  122.            Most mouse problems can be fixed by changing the mouse cursor to
  123.            Black and White or to Color (under System Options, Mouse Cursor).
  124.            Certain systems run better with Black and  White cursors, others
  125.            with Color cursors.  If you have animated cursors, turning this
  126.            off in windows will also correct certain problems.

  128.    B)   DOS
  129.      1)   Memory (DOS):
  130.           If you experience problems with EMM386 or memmaker while running
  131.           Heroes of Might and Magic II:  The Succession Wars try:
  132.             1. Typing EMM386 OFF at your command prompt.
  133.             If EMM386 reports Inactive then Heroes should run properly.
  134.             Note: You will need to type EMM386 OFF every time you reboot
  135.             your computer.
  136.             2. Try REMing out EMM386 in your CONFIG.SYS.  Type the
  137.             following at your command prompt and hit ENTER.
  138.             EDIT C:\CONFIG.SYS   (This will edit your system configuration)
  139.             find the line:   DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE   or the like and add
  140.             to the front of the line REM.  REM DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE
  141.             Go to the File Menu and Select Exit and answer YES to save the
  142.             changes.  If you need to re-install EMM386 for any reason you
  143.             can remove the REM at the front of the line.  You will need to
  144.             re-boot your computer for This change to take effect.
  145.      2)   Music Volume:
  146.           Changing the music volume in the DOS version only affects the MIDI
  147.           volume.  To adjust the CD music volume you need to use the mixer
  148.           volume control program that came with your sound card.

  153. 3)   PERFORMANCE
  154. To increase performance, while playing Heroes of Might and Magic II:  The
  155. Succession Wars, try :
  156.    1)   Changing the video to interlaced mode.
  157.    2)   Turning the music and/or sound to off.
  158.    3)   Setting your speed and the computer speed to jump.
  159.    4)   Setting the combat speed to very fast.
  160.    5)   If you are playing in Windows 95, play in full screen mode.

  168. Residing on your game CD is an application named Game Previews.  Just double 
  169. click on the icon to launch a groovy interactive catalog containing updated 
  170. information on past, present, and future Studio 3DO and New World Computing 
  171. products. Screen shots, movies, all that good stuff. For best results, set 
  172. your display to 800x600 and 16-bit color. We hope you enjoy Game Previews-
  173. your online guide to the cutting edge in electronic interactive entertainment 
  174. (or non-abrasive marketing propaganda, depending on how you look at it).

  186. connection between your computer and the Internet.  This will allow you
  187. to take advantage of the Internet from your home using Netscape 2.0
  188. (included).  To install, click More from the Autorun screen, then click
  189. on AT&T WorldNet(sm) Service.  To finish the installation, you will be
  190. asked to enter a registration code.  AT&T WorldNet(sm) Service is currently
  191. available only in the United States.
