_____In August 1979 North Korea invaded South Korea to begin the 2nd Korean War. The United States put forth several resolutions in the United Nations but each was, in turn, vetoed by China. Consequently it was NATO that stepped in to assist the South.*
_____Five countries deployed forces to assist in pushing back the Northern forces. The North Korean Army was considerably better armed and trained that it had been before.*
_____In keeping with standard Warsaw pact doctrine, one of the initial objectives of the North Koreans was to try and get a sizeable ground force into position from which to attack the NATO supply lines.*
_____Late on 24 September, the 3rd Battalion, 112th Motor Rifle Regiment launched a probing assault on the French 9th Expeditionary Force (9 EF) located on Takao Ridge. If the North Koreans could breach the French lines the 54th Independant Tank Battalion, currently in reserve, would exploit the opportunity and push through the breach to begin ravaging the Allied rear areas.*
_____This would be the 9th Expeditionary Force's first real test of the war.
