  29. protection system. BCWipe software is intended to give you 
  30. a confidence that your deleted files will not be restored 
  31. by any intruder.

  36. 2. Why do you need a wiping utility?
  37. ---------------------------------------------------------

  39. When you delete your sensitive files from a disk on your 
  40. computer, operating system (Windows 95 or Windows NT)
  41. does not erase these files contents from the disk - it only 
  42. deletes 'references' on these files from some system tables. 
  43. Contents of the deleted file (or file's `body') continue to 
  44. be stored on the disk and can be easily restored using any 
  45. disk tool utility.
  46.  
  47. You should also take into account the problem of so-called 
  48. Windows 'Swap' file. Swap file is the Windows system file 
  49. that is used for the virtual memory support. The size of 
  50. this file changes dynamically, and it can temporarily store 
  51. the parts of files or other information. When you open your 
  52. secret document, Swap file can be used by system to store
  53. a part of the document. 
  54.  
  55. What is wiping?
  56.  
  57. A "wiping" term is used here to call a process of shreding 
  58. a contents of a file or a free disk space. It will be 
  59. impossible to restore the data stored before on the disk or 
  60. in the file if you run a wiping utility. 
  61.  
  62. BCWipe utility provides 3 ways to shred files' contents from 
  63. the disk when you delete your sensitive files:
  64.  
  65. a. Delete with wiping. Using 'Delete with wiping' command 
  66.    you can delete and wipe your files and folders from 
  67.    Windows Shell (Explorer program);
  68.  
  69. b. Wipe free disk space. If you have deleted sensitive files
  70.    using standard operating system command, you may wipe 
  71.    free space on the disk where these files were stored - 
  72.    all previously deleted files' contents become erased;
  73.  
  74. c. Swap file wiping. BCWipe utility automatically wipes 
  75.    Windows Swap file contents when you run 'Wipe free 
  76.    disk space' command.

  78. 3. How to install BCWipe utility
  79. ---------------------------------------------------------
  80.  
  81. Setup program copies all necessary files to your hard disk 
  82. and inserts all needed lines into Windows 95/NT Registry 
  83. database.
  84.  
  85. BCWipe Utility Setup program uses a standard way to install
  86. software and provides all necessary explanations of 
  87. installation steps details. The only default information 
  88. user may want to change during installation is the Directory
  89. name where to place the BCWipe Utility.
  90.  
  91. All dialog windows of the Setup programs are like each 
  92. other and have the following buttons:
  93.  
  94. Cancel - click this button to abort installation
  95. Next - click this button to proceed installation
  96. Back - click this button to return to previous step of 
  97.        installation
  98.  
  99. NOTE:
  100.  
  101. BCWipe Utility Setup program writes also an information to 
  102. Windows Registry database, places dynamic load liblaries 
  103. to WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, prepares a file for 
  104. uninstall procedure. Please do not make any manual 
  105. manipulations to install or uninstall BCWipe Utility 
  106. software to prevent appearance of unused garbage 
  107. software on the system directory or unused strings 
  108. in Registry database.

  110. 4. How to run BCWipe utility
  111. ---------------------------------------------------------
  112.  
  113. You can run BCWipe utility from Windows Shell (Explorer 
  114. program). After installation of BCWipe utility you will find 
  115. "Wipe free space" and "Delete with wiping" commands in 
  116. the context menus of the Explorer program. You can call a 
  117. context menu by pressing right mouse button on the drive 
  118. you would like to wipe or on the file (folder) you would 
  119. like to delete.
  120.  
  121. You will need to choose the option for wiping your disk: 
  122. Normal or U.S. DoD. U.S. DoD wiping is enhanced 
  123. shredding process to match U.S. Department of 
  124. Defence recommendations (DoD 5220.22-M).  DoD 
  125. wiping is useful if you assume that your computer 
  126. disks may be investigated with a special equipment. 
  127. In other cases choosing of the Normal wiping option 
  128. will make your free disk space useless for curios hackers.
  129.  
  130. NOTE: Before running "Wipe free space" command on the 
  131. disk it is recommended to close all apllications. There 
  132. are at least two reasons to do this: 
  133.    - some programs create temporary files and the contents 
  134.      of this files will not be wiped when you run "Wipe free 
  135.      space" command;
  136.  
  137.    - Windows swap file (or pagefile) may store some 
  138.      sensitive information that is used by currently loaded 
  139.      applications. This part of swap file will not be wiped.
  140.

  142. 5. How to run BCWipe utility from the command line prompt.
  143. ---------------------------------------------------------
  144.  
  145. You may run BCWipe commands to wipe free space on the disk 
  146. and delete files or folders with wiping from the command 
  147. line.
  148.  
  149. This feature of the BCWipe software allows you to insert 
  150. wiping commands to your BAT files and then run this BAT file
  151. automatically using Windows 95 SystemAgent or other 
  152. sheduling software.
  153.  
  154. BCWipe Setup program installs BCWipe.exe program to the 
  155. target directory which you have choosen during installation.
  156.  
  157. To run BCWipe command to wipe free space on the disk you 
  158. should run BCWipe.exe by the following way:
  159.  
  160. > BCWipe <FreeSpace> [-<Mode>] <drive name>
  161.  
  162. For example: 
  163. > BCWipe.exe FreeSpace -DoD C:
  164.  
  165. To run BCWipe command to delete files or folders you 
  166. should run BCWipe.exe by the following way:
  167.  
  168. > BCWipe.exe <Delete> [-<Mode>] <file or folder name> [<file or folder name>...]
  169.  
  170. For example:
  171. > BCWipe.exe Delete -Normal C:\\SecureDate.doc
  172.  
  173. In both cases the optional field <Mode> may be:
  174.   DoD    - the U.S.DoD (5220.22-M) seven pass extended character rotation wiping
  175.   Normal - two pass standard wiping
  176.  
  177. ATTENTION: If you run BCWipe.exe with the field <Mode> set 
  178. to "DoD" or "Normal", the BCWipe utility will run without 
  179. asking any additional confirmation for deleting files and 
  180. for wiping free space on the disk. Be careful to run the 
  181. utility using this way! It will be impossible to restore 
  182. files' contents after this operation!

  185. 6. Known problems
  186. ---------------------------------------------------------
  187.  
  188. If your computer has more than one disk, BCWipe utility 
  189. correctly defines what disk contains Windows swap file for 
  190. Windows 95 computers. 
  191.  
  192. On Windows NT 4.0 computers the file 'pagefile.sys' usually
  193. is on the disk where operating system have been installed. 
  194. If you did not change this default configuration for your 
  195. pagefile, BCWipe utility will work with the pagefile 
  196. correctly. If you have manually moved your pagefile to other
  197. location, you should take into account that BCWipe utility 
  198. may not correctly report you about a pagefile location. 
  199. Besides of this incorrect drive letter report BCWipe utility 
  200. will work with Windows NT 4.0 pagefile correctly.

  202. This problem for Windows NT will be solved in the nearest 
  203. future.

  205. 7. What is BestCrypt NP Data Protection System?
