SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
===================
To run Internet Explorer 4.0, your system must meet the following
minimum requirements:
- A 486 with a 66 Mhz processor
- For Windows 95: 8 MB of RAM
For Windows NT: 16 MB of RAM
- 86 MB of available hard-disk space (for a full installation)
SETUP
=====
- WARNING: Do not install any previous version of Internet
Explorer over Internet Explorer 4.0. If you need to install
an earlier version of Internet Explorer, you must uninstall
Internet Explorer 4.0 first.
- You should always uninstall your current version of Internet
Explorer 4.0 before installing a newer build.
- Make sure you are connected to the Internet before you run Setup.
- You must be running either Windows 95 or Windows NT version 4.0
before you install Internet Explorer 4.0.
- Before you install Internet Explorer 4.0, you should disable any
scheduled tasks from running that might interfere with the Setup
process.
- If your Windows installation is on drive C and you want to do
a full install of Internet Explorer on drive D, you must have
86 MB of free disk space on the Windows drive. In addition,
you might need to have 10 MB more of free disk space on the
installation drive (in this example, drive D). This is true
only if you are installing Internet Explorer immediately, not
downloading it for later installation.
Installing Internet Explorer 4.0
--------------------------------
Whether you choose to install over the network or to download
the installation files to your hard disk, the Setup files are
copied to your hard disk. For this release, this function is
by design, so you can reinstall more quickly if you need to.
If you want to reclaim the disk space, you can delete the
Internet Explorer 4.0 Setup folder from your hard disk.
Note that you cannot install Internet Explorer 4.0 to or run
it from a network drive. However, you can download it to a
network drive. To do this, you must map the network drive to
a drive letter on your hard disk. You cannot download Internet
Explorer 4.0 to a UNC path.
If Internet Explorer 4.0 appears to stop responding at the end
of Setup, you need to restart your computer manually.
Running Internet Explorer 4.0 on Windows NT
-------------------------------------------
NOTE: You must have administrative privileges to install and
uninstall this program on Windows NT. This includes having
administrative privileges the first time you start your
computer after installing or uninstalling.
It is recommended that you install Service Pack 3 for Windows NT 4.0
before you install Internet Explorer 4.0. If you do not install
Service Pack 3, you will not be able to navigate to secured (https:)
sites with the Internet Explorer 4.0 browser or use all the features
of some components, such as Netmeeting and Outlook Express.
You must restart your computer after installing Internet Explorer 4.0.
This is also true for some add-on components.
Uninstalling Internet Explorer 4.0
----------------------------------
You can uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0 by carrying out the following
steps:
1. In Control Panel, click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
2. Click Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, and then click Add/Remove.
3. Follow the instructions on your screen.
Uninstalling Removes Some Java Components from Internet Explorer 3.0
--------------------------------------------------------------------
If you uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0 and return to using Internet
Explorer 3.0, some Java components may not display properly. To work
around this problem, open the Web site http://www.microsoft.com/ie
and download the appropriate Java VM. When a dialog box appears asking
whether you want to replace newer files, click "No".
Uninstall Does Not Return Your Computer to Its Previous State
-------------------------------------------------------------
Note that the following problems might occur when you uninstall
Internet Explorer 4.0:
- Registry entries will be left on your computer.
- It does not uninstall all components. You can uninstall individual
components by using the Add/Remove Programs icon in Control Panel.
- Some user settings are lost.
- Some files and shortcuts are left behind.
Adding or Removing Web Integrated Desktop
-----------------------------------------
To add or remove Web Integrated Desktop, carry out the following
steps:
1. In Control Panel, click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
2. Double-click Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0.
3. Select the appropriate option: "Remove Web Integrated Desktop,
But Keep The Internet Explorer 4.0 Web Browser" or "Add Web
Integrated Desktop from Web Site."
NOTE: For this release, selecting "Add Web Integrated Desktop from
Web Site" opens the Internet Explorer 4 components download page so
you can download and install the Web Integrated Desktop components
(675 KB). If you have previously downloaded or installed Web Integrated
Desktop, you can enable it without connecting to the Internet by running
IE4setup.exe from your local Internet Explorer 4.0 Setup folder. When
prompted, click Yes to enable Web Integrated Desktop, and then choose
to upgrade only newer items.
Reinstalling Internet Explorer 3.0
----------------------------------
If for any reason you need to return to using version 3.0 of
Internet Explorer, carry out the following steps to make sure
that the Internet Connection Wizard will work properly:
1. Uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0.
2. Use the Find command on the Start menu to find and delete the
following files:
Inetcfg.dll
Icwdial.dll
Isign.dll
Icwphbk.dll
3. Uninstall and then reinstall Internet Explorer 3.0.
Installing Internet Explorer in a Language Different
than the Operating System Language
----------------------------------------------------
If you install a version of Internet Explorer in a language
different from the language of the operating system you are
running, the Web Integrated Desktop will not be installed.
Error Message About FrontPage Express Appears After Uninstall
-------------------------------------------------------------
If you do a full installation of Internet Explorer 4.0, then
uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0 and all its components, you
will see an error message that FrontPage Express was not
successfully uninstalled.
REFRESHING APPLETS UNDER DEVELOPMENT WITHOUT RESTARTING
INTERNET EXPLORER
=======================================================
Visual J++ 1.1 and other development environments have previously
required the browser to be restarted in order for updated classes
to be used while debugging. This was because of issues with Internet
Explorer loading Java classes from the cache rather than from any
updated classes on the developer's machine. Using Internet Explorer
4.0, you can just press CTRL+F5, or CTRL+ the Refresh button, to
cause the classes to be reloaded and any updates used.
KNOWN ISSUES
============
Uninstalling Web Integrated Desktop Causes Apparent Error
---------------------------------------------------------
When you uninstall the Web Integrated Desktop, whether you are
uninstalling just that component or Internet Explorer 4.0, when
your computer restarts it will try to find a drive named W:/.
You can ignore the message that appears.
Some Security Settings May Cause Browser Problem
------------------------------------------------
Loading a page containing a Java applet after changing some
advanced security settings, such as disabling Java applets,
may cause the Web browser to appear to hang. If this happens,
you can still use the Address bar to open a different URL,
which should then work properly.
Script Wizard Does Not Work Properly in FrontPage
-------------------------------------------------
This feature is currently not working in this release.
Some Programs Do Not Detect Browser Version Correctly
-----------------------------------------------------
Some third-party Internet-based applications use non-standard
methods of detecting the current browser version. If you see this
problem in a program you are running, please contact the program
vendor for an update.
Subscriptions Will Be Lost
--------------------------
If you are upgrading over the previous release, all subscriptions
will be lost. You will need to resubscribe to each Web site.
Some Encryption Settings Do Not Work in Internet Properties
-----------------------------------------------------------
If you change the ssl or pct settings on the Advanced tab in
the Security dialog box, the settings will not be changed in
the registry. To work around this problem if you are an expert
user, you can change these settings manually in the registry.
Uninstalling Doesn't Remove Internet Icons in Other Programs
------------------------------------------------------------
If you uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0, Internet icons remain
in other programs, such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
If you click those icons, nothing happens, because there no
browser is available.
Error Message Appears When Viewing Subscriptions Offline
--------------------------------------------------------
When you are trying to view a subscription offline, you may get
the following error message: "Internet Explorer cannot open the
Internet site http://example.microsoft.com. The site was not
found. Make sure the address is correct, and try again."
If that happens, click the File menu, and then make sure that
Work Offline is selected.
Internet Icon on Desktop May Not Work Properly
----------------------------------------------
If you click the Internet icon on the desktop and an error message
appears, it is because you installed Internet Explorer to a path
whose name uses extended characters.
Computer Locked While Connecting to a Directory Service
-------------------------------------------------------
If you are connecting to a directory service, you will not be able
to use your computer until the connection is either made or times
out. Otherwise, you can press CTRL+ALT+DELETE and end the task.
Full Control Permissions Needed for Temporary Internet Files Folder
-------------------------------------------------------------------
If you're running Internet Explorer 4.0 on Windows NT, you must set
user permissions to Full Control for the Temporary Internet Files
folder (cache). The user must have write permission in order for
files to be stored in the Temporary Internet Files folder.
Microsoft Fax Causes Error When Mail Programs Are Closed
--------------------------------------------------------
When Microsoft Fax is installed, closing Outlook or Exchange
causes an invalid page fault.
PICS Support Is Not Yet Fully Functional
----------------------------------------
The Internet Explorer Content Advisor uses PICS (Platform for
Internet Content Selection) ratings. However, there are a few
known instances where the PICS standards are not yet in place:
- The PICS rating is not used for documents using the file://
protocol.
- If you have security ratings enabled, then subscribe to a rated
site from your Favorites list, the Active Screen Saver will display
the rated site (and all other subscribed sites). This will be fixed
in future releases.
Some Controls Don't Print Properly
----------------------------------
Some controls, such as the MS Investor Ticker, do not print
at all.
Time Zones Display Differently
------------------------------
When you use programs that use the java.util.Date class, note
that time zones are displayed differently when using Sun's JDK
and Java(TM) Support for Internet Explorer 3.0 or 4.0.
For the same entry, the displays would appear as follows:
Sun JDK:
Wed Dec 20 08:57:00 PST 1995
Java Support for Internet Explorer 3.0/4.0:
Wed Dec 20 08:57:00 Pacific Standard Time 1995
This issue will be addressed in a future release.
The Java Virtual Machine is based in part on the work of the
Independent JPEG Group.
Java is a trademark of Sun Microsystems.
Screen Might Flicker on Active Desktop View with 256 Colors
-----------------------------------------------------------
Your screen might flicker if you are running the Active Desktop
and your monitor is set to display 256 colors. To work around
this problem, change the color setting, or right-click the
desktop and click Active Desktop to remove the check mark.
This is a problem on only some systems.
Problem With VB 5.0 ActiveX Controls
------------------------------------
With this release, if you are running Active Desktop and you
close a page containing a VB 5.0 ActiveX Control, there will
be a fault in Explorer, and the Active Desktop will restart the
next time you click an item on the taskbar.
Installed Backgrounds Become Part of Active Desktop
---------------------------------------------------
If you install a program that changes your desktop background,
such as Microsoft Plus!, and then try to revert to the default
Active Desktop settings, the installed background remains on
the desktop.
ActiveX Controls Do Not Work on DEC Alpha Computers
---------------------------------------------------
If you are using a DEC Alpha computer, note that ActiveX Controls
for Windows 95 and Windows NT do not work on this system.
Running Internet Explorer 4.0 on IBM Aptiva Computers
-----------------------------------------------------
If you use an IBM Aptiva computer, and you turn on the Active
Desktop after downloading Internet Explorer 4.0, the desktop
animation effects program that is shipped with IBM Aptiva
computers no longer works. When you hover over an animated
icon, the icon disappears from the desktop.
Closing Security Dialog Box Can Cause Invalid Page Fault Error
--------------------------------------------------------------
If you try to open an unknown file type in Internet Explorer,
you will see the following message: "Internet Explorer is opening
file of unknown type: <filename> from <drive>. What would you like
to do with this file?..." If you close the browser window and then
cancel the security message, you will get an invalid page fault error.
This will be fixed in a future release.
Active Desktop Is Turned Off If Desktop Files Are Moved
-------------------------------------------------------
If you move, rename, or delete a file in use as an HTML background or
desktop object, the Active Desktop is automatically turned off. This
is because the Active Desktop is looking for a file that it cannot
find. To turn the Active Desktop back on, carry out the following
steps:
1. Right-click the desktop, point to Active Desktop, and then click
View As Web Page to remove the check mark.
2. Press F5 to refresh the desktop.
3. To restart the Active Desktop, right-click the desktop, click
Properties, click the Desktop tab, and then select one or both
of the Active Desktop settings.
4. Before you click OK, make sure you edit the path to the desktop
object or HTML background file that was moved, renamed, or deleted
so that the path points to the current location of the file;
otherwise, the Active Desktop will be turned off again.
Fault May Occur When Importing CSV File into Address Book
---------------------------------------------------------
If you previously installed build 544.1 of Internet Explorer 4.0, a
fault might occur when you try to import a CSV (comma-separated values)
file into the Address Book. This is a because an old version of the
address book being run instead of the current version. To fix this
problem, rename the following files:
In this folder Rename this file To this
---------------- ---------------- --------
\Windows Wabmig.exe Wabmig.ie3
\Windows\System Wab32.dll Wab32.ie3
Using Wildcards in URLs for Trusted and Restricted Sites Zones
--------------------------------------------------------------
Only certain usages of the * as a wildcard will work in the Web
sites lists for zones; invalid usages of this wildcard are ignored
and have no effect.
The valid uses of the * as a wildcard in this instance are as follows:
- Use the * in place of the protocol, then use a specific domain name--
for example, *://example.microsoft.com.
- Use the specific protocol, then use the * in place of the subdomain--
for example, http://*.example.microsoft.com.
Active Screen Saver Doesn't Work When Security Set to High
----------------------------------------------------------
If you see an error message when the Active Screen Saver tries to run,
try changing your security setting, or run a different screen saver.
Browsing Doesn't Work Properly with Modem Connection and Domain
---------------------------------------------------------------
If you are logged onto the Internet in a corporate environment (for
example, with a domain), and the modem is configured for unattended
dial-up to your Internet service provider, the browser will not work
properly. To work around this problem, carry out the following steps:
1. Right-click The Internet icon on your Desktop, and then click
Properties.
2. Click on the Connection tab, and then click Settings.
3. Delete the text in the Domain(Optional) box.
Error Occurs with Adding Microsoft Internet Controls Using VB 4.0
-----------------------------------------------------------------
If you are adding Microsoft Internet Controls to the Custom Control
Toolbox using Visual Basic 4.0, you may see the following error
message: "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SHDOCVW.DLL could not be loaded."
To work around this problem, run regedit and delete the following key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EAB22AC3-30C1-11CF-A7EB-0000C05BAE0B}\Control
This allows VB 4.0 to load the file Shdocvw.dll. It also enables VB 5.0
to display only the correct version of the WebBrowser control; otherwise,
it displays the correct one, plus one that says WebBrowser_V1 (which is
there only for compatibility with Internet Explorer 3.0 and should not
be visible).
Some HTML Files Don't Work as Desktop Wallpaper
-----------------------------------------------
If an HTML page implements a parent frame in VBScript, that page will
not work properly when selected as desktop wallpaper. You will see the
following error message: "Object doesn't support this prop. or method:
'Parent.Frames'") In the browser, the page will load correctly.
Status Bar Display for Security Zones Does Not Indicate Mixed Zones
--------------------------------------------------------------------
If you display an HTML site that uses frames to display information
from different security zones, the Status Bar will currently display
only the security zone of the top-level frameset, even if the page
contains frames in different zones. Mixed zones will be indiciated
for the final release.
Password Not Saved If You Dial Up without Logging on to Windows
---------------------------------------------------------------
If you connect to the Internet by using Dial-Up Networking, and you
do not log on to Windows first, you will need to type your password
each time you dial.
Need to Restart Your Computer Before Running Script Debugger
------------------------------------------------------------
If you install the Script Debugger from the add-on page, you need
to restart your computer before running the debugger. Otherwise,
you will get an error message and the debugger will not run.
Some Applications Might Need to Be Reinstalled
----------------------------------------------
If you install Internet Explorer 4.0, then install an application,
then uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0, some applications may not
work properly. If that happens, you would need to reinstall the
application after you uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0.
VC5 Online Documentation Won't Open when Ratings Are Enabled
------------------------------------------------------------
If you are using VC5 and you have ratings enabled, you will be
denied access to each page in the VC5 online documentation. This
is because it is based on HTML and opens in the browser. To work
around this problem, disable ratings while using VC5.
Active Desktop Items May Not Display with Ratings Enabled
---------------------------------------------------------
If you have ratings enabled, you might not be able to view certain
items that you've added to your Active Desktop. If you see a white
square instead of Web content, try turning off ratings.
Cannot Use Registry or ERD Files Created Before
Installing Internet Explorer 4.0
-----------------------------------------------
If you install Internet Explorer 4.0 and then restore a Windows 95
registry that was created before you installed Internet Explorer 4.0,
or use a Windows NT Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) that was created
before you installed Internet Explorer 4.0, you may be unable to
start Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0. This problem occurs when you
restore an older Windows 95 registry or you use an older ERD before
you uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0.
To resolve this problem, use the Ieremove.exe tool to remove Internet
Explorer 4.0. For information about how to do so, open the Microsoft
Knowledge Base at http://www.microsoft.com/kb/default.asp, and then see
the following articles:
For Windows 95, see Article Q166313,
"Removing Internet Explorer 4.0 for Windows 95 Using Ieremove.exe"
For Windows NT, see Article Q166314,
"Removing Internet Explorer for Windows NT 4.0 Using Ieremove.exe"
Cannot Open Links on Yahoo by Pressing ENTER
--------------------------------------------
If you press ENTER to open a link on http://www.yahoo.com, the link will
not open properly. If you have a Windows-95 compliant keyboard, you can
work around this problem by tabbing to the link you want to open, right-
clicking the link, and then clicking Open.
Must Close Server Verification Dialog Box for Changes to Take Effect
--------------------------------------------------------------------
If you click the Require Server Verification (https:) For All Sites
In This Zone check box (reached by clicking the View menu, clicking
Options, clicking the Security tab, and then clicking Add Sites, you
need to close and then reopen the dialog box for the changes to take
effect.
Restoring the Active Desktop
----------------------------
If your desktop is in Active Desktop Recovery mode, note that there
should be a link that says "Restore my Active Desktop." If the link
is not visible, it may be because you are running in 640x480 resolution
with 16 colors. The link is still active, however. If you move the mouse
pointer over the screen below the visible text until the pointer turns
into a hand, you can still click the link to restore your Active Desktop.
If you were using large fonts in 640x480 resolution, the text on your
screen in Active Desktop Recovery mode will not appear correctly. To
work around this problem, you can change the screen resolution to 800x600
or greater, until you see the "Restore my Active Desktop" link on your
desktop. Or you can change to using medium or small fonts, then right-
click your desktop, point to Active Desktop, and clear the View As Web
Page command. Then right-click your desktop again, point to Active
Desktop, and click the View As Web Page command again.
Malformed Table Template Can Cause Errors
-----------------------------------------
When you are using data binding with repeated tables, be sure to use
proper HTML code within the table. Extraneous or badly placed end tags--
such as </TR>, </TD>, and </THEAD>--can result in the browser hanging
or in a GPF error. Sometimes this occurs only after the data has been
re-displayed as a result of an action such as sorting or filtering. To
work around this problem, make sure that the HTML table is structured
properly and that the HTML code conforms to the syntax defined in the
TABLE DTD.
Status Bar Does Not Properly Reflect Data Binding Status
--------------------------------------------------------
The status bar currently moves to 100% before data binding has
completely displayed a repeated table. This is a bug in the status
code only. Object model events associated with data binding are working
properly. No workaround is required.
Cross-Frame Security in TDC
---------------------------
The TDC uses cross-frame scripting security to determine when access
is allowed to the data file specified on the DataURL parameter. Cross-
frame scripting security requires that the URL have the same protocol
as the URL for the document that contains the TDC as well as the same
second-level domain. Access to a data file from www.microsoft.com and
sitebuilder.microsoft.com is allowed, whereas access to a data file at
www.msn.com and www.microsoft.com is not allowed. When the TDC is
provided with a DataURL that is not accessible, it silently fails to
expose data.
Using Internet Explorer 4.0 with Matrox Display Adapters
--------------------------------------------------------
If you have a Matrox display adapter installed, you may occasionally
receive invalid page faults in Mgapdx64.drv while browsing or
scrolling with Internet Explorer 4.0. To work around this problem,
try reinstalling updated drivers for these display cards.
Previewing Files from HTML Authoring Applications
-------------------------------------------------
The Internet Explorer 4.0 browser might not preview documents
correctly from some HTML authoring applications.
Temporary Internet Files are Replicated
to the Home Directory of Roaming Users
----------------------------------------
The Temporary Internet Files folder is replicated to the home
directory of users with roaming profiles. This may cause disk-space
problems on servers with numerous roaming users or several users with
large caches. To set cache size, click the View menu, click Options,
and then click the Settings button.
Using the Connection Settings Dialog Box
----------------------------------------
If you open the connection Settings dialog box, click the Dialing tab,
and then manually type a phone number, TAPI (Telephony Application
Programming Interface) dialing properties are not applied to the phone
number. These properties include settings such as the number(s) used to
access an outside line for local calls, the number(s) used to access an
outside line for long-distance calls, and whether to dial using a calling
card.
Using a Dial-Up Networking Connection with an Alternate Phone Number
--------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are running Internet Explorer 4.0 on Windows NT, you may
experience problems using any Dial-Up Networking connection that has
an alternate phone number. Before you can dial using a connection with
an alternate phone number, you must delete the alternate phone number
from the Dial-Up connection.
Protected Storage Prompt for Windows Password
---------------------------------------------
If you use a logon password, Protected Storage may use it to protect
certain private data. Under certain circumstances, you may encounter
a Protected Storage dialog box asking you to reenter your current and
previous Windows logon password.
If you encounter this dialog box, and entering both your current and
previous Windows passwords does not work, try entering your current
password, leaving the previous password blank, and then clicking OK.
Alternatively, if you are using a portable computer with power
management and the dialog box appeared after after power was
suspended, try leaving the current password blank, entering your
current password as your previous password, and then clicking OK.
Certificates Lost After Uninstall
---------------------------------
If you install Internet Explorer 4.0 on a computer running Windows 95,
obtain certificates, then uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0, the
certificates will be lost. Certificates obtained before you installed
Internet Explorer 4.0 will remain on the computer after Internet
Explorer 4.0 is uninstalled.
Java Applets May Not Print Correctly

USING A LOCAL AREA NETWORK PROXY OR FIREWALL
============================================
If your local area network or ISP uses a proxy or firewall to
protect your network from being accessed by others on the Internet,
carry out the following steps, which set up your computer to gain
access to the Internet through a firewall:
1. Run the Internet Connection Wizard:
- Click the Start button, point to Programs, and then point to
Accessories.
- Point to Internet Tools, and then click Get On The Internet.
2. Configure your computer to connect to the Internet by using
TCP/IP on your local area network.
3. When you are prompted for the gateway address, type the IP
address (for example, 123.456.789.123) supplied by your
network administrator only if your organization uses gateways
for routing information over the network.
NOTE: The gateway computer is not the same as the proxy or
firewall computer that protects your local area network
from the Internet, so do not type your proxy or firewall
address here.
4. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click
Control Panel.
5. Double-click the Internet icon, and then click the Connection

http://myproxy.mycompany.com:80
In this example, you would type http://myproxy.mycompany.com in
the first text box, and 80 in the second text box.
You can use a different proxy for different types of addresses.
However, if you want to use the same proxy for all types of
addresses, make sure you select the Use Same Proxy Server For All
Addresses check box.
9. In the Exceptions area, click in the text box, and then type the
names of the computers, domains, and ports on the Internet that,
when accessed, will not go through the proxy server. Separate each
item you type with a semicolon (;). If you do not know what to type
here, see your network administrator.
If you do not want to use the proxy for local addresses, make sure
you select the Do Not Use Proxy For Local (Intranet) Addresses
check box. Local addresses are defined as those where the server
name does not contain a period (.). For example:
http://internalweb/ is a local address.

fields should be left blank and the Socks field should contain the
address of your Socks proxy server. The only exception is when you
are using a Socks proxy and a different proxy (for example, HTTP) on
