  5. Installation
  6. ============

  8. To install Crowd Control, follow these easy steps:
  9.  
  10. 1.  Unzip the file crowd.zip into the directory of your choice.
  11.  
  12. 2.  Locate setup.exe in that directory, either through Windows 
  13. Explorer or the Run command on the Start Up menu.
  14.  
  15. 3.  Run setup.exe and then follow the directions in Crowd 
  16. Control's Installation Wizard.

  19. What is Crowd Control? 
  20. ======================
  21.  
  22. Crowd Control is an exciting new program from Sahalie Software 
  23. that allows you to take control of your Windows 95 computer. With
  24. Crowd Control, you can set up Windows 95 user accounts for each 
  25. user of your computer. Each user has his or her own Desktop, 
  26. Start Menu, Programs folder and other Win 95 folders. In addition, 
  27. you can place restrictions on users to control use of the computer
  28. and minimize the risk that other users will accidentally delete 
  29. important files or configuration settings.

  31. With Crowd Control, you control: 
  32.  
  33.      *Users*    Only authorized users of your computer will be 
  34.      allowed to log on to Windows 95. Version 1.3 now allows 
  35.      your primary user (the "administrator") to prevent a user
  36.      from changing his/her Windows logon password.  This setting
  37.      is especially useful where a number of individuals are 
  38.      assigned one user name.

  40.      *Access to Drives*    Hide selected drives from individual 
  41.      users. 
  42.  
  43.      *Access to Programs*    Restrict individual users to running 
  44.      only certain programs. 
  45.  
  46.      *Windows 95 Folders*    Give each user his or her own Start 
  47.      Menu, Programs Folder, Startup Folder, Favorites Folder, 
  48.      Desktop and Recents Folder. 
  49.  
  50.      *Windows 95 Settings*    Place restrictions on the ability of 
  51.      individual users to access the system and system settings. 
  52.      Disable Registry Editing tools and access to the system 
  53.      configuration settings in Control Panel. 
  54.  
  55.      *Windows 95 Start Menu*    Disable access to the following 
  56.      Start Menu items: Run, Find and Settings. You can also hide all
  57.      items on the user's Desktop. 
  58.  
  59.      *Use of DOS Based programs*    Restrict access to the MS-DOS 
  60.      prompt and single mode MS-DOS applications.
  61.  
  62.      *Win 95 Boot Option*     For increased security, Crowd Control
  63.      lets you disable the Win 95 boot options through the Crowd 
  64.      Control settings panel.  When these options are disabled, the 
  65.      user can no longer start a previous version of DOS or access 
  66.      Win 95 safe mode as a means of avoiding Crowd Control
  67.      restrictions.

  69. Requirements: Crowd Control is designed to run only on Windows 95. It 
  70. will not work with Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups or Windows NT. 
  71. It is recommended that you have at least a 486 computer with 8 mb of
  72. RAM.

  75. Evaluation Copy of Crowd Control 1.3

  79. This is an evaluation copy of Crowd Control 1.3, which can be used
  80. for 30 days before you purchase.

  82. You can purchase a registered copy of Crowd Control for $29.95, plus
  83. $5.00 per order shipping and handling for addresses in the U.S.,
  84. Mexico and Canada.  Shipping and handling for all other addresses

  87. When you register Crowd Control 1.3, you will receive both a full
  88. version on disk and a license number [listed on your invoice and
  89. written on the disk].  Your license number can be used to unlock
  90. future maintenance upgrades of Crowd Control 1.xx, which can be 
  91. downloaded from our web site and other locations.

  103. Version 1.1 of Crowd Control introduced these new features:
  104.  
  105. 1.  The ability to disable system startup options for better security.
  106. When Windows 95 boots up, it allows the user to start Windows in
  107. safe mode or boot to a previous version of DOS by pressing certain
  108. function keys.  Crowd Control's restrictions will not apply if those
  109. options are chosen, so Crowd Control now allows you to disable those 
  110. startup options.

  112. 2.  The option to specify a different Startup folder for each user, 
  113. so that the programs in a particular user's Startup folder are 
  114. automatically run when that user logs in.  [See special instructions
  115. below if you are upgrading from Crowd Control 1.0].  
  116.  
  117. 3.  Version 1.1 also corrected a problem which occasionally caused 
  118. the Crowd Control restrictions to remain in effect after Crowd Control
  119. was turned off or uninstalled.

  121.      Version 1.2

  125. Version 1.2 of Crowd Control introduced this feature:
  126.  
  127. 1.   Crowd Control automatically detects if "Windows Logon" is not
  128. selected as the userÆs Primary Network Logon in the Networks 
  129. section of Control Panel, prompting the user through a Security
  130. Warning window to change this setting.  If this setting is 
  131. incorrect, under some circumstances a user can enter an invalid 
  132. password when logging in and then press cancel to bypass the normal
  133. logon verification.  Changing this setting prevents a user from 
  134. doing so.

  136.      Version 1.3
  137.      ===========

  139. Version 1.3 introduced this feature:
  140.  
  141. 1.   The administrator can prevent a user from changing his or her 
  142. password.  This feature is particularly helpful where a number of 
  143. individuals are signing in as a single user, to prevent one member 
  144. of the group from locking everyone else out.

  148. Start Up Folders in Crowd Control 1.3
  149. =====================================

  152. If you are upgrading from version 1.0 [these instructions do not
  153. apply if you are using version 1.1], you will need to designate 
  154. a startup directory for each existing user.  This is done by selecting
  155. the Win 95 folders tab and selecting the StartUp folder from the
  156. dropdown list.  Then click the browse (...) button and select a
  157. directory.

  159. For your primary user (the "administrator"), you should chose the 
  160. default windows StartUp folder, which is usually: 
  161. c:\windows\start menu\programs\startup.  
  162.  
  163. For your other users, find the similar folders under that user's 
  164. profile.  For example, for the user "Sally," select:
  165. c:\windows\profiles\Sally\start menu\programs\startup.  
  166.  
  167. Our examples assume your windows directory is c:\windows.  [These 
  168. settings will be automatic if you are starting with version 1.1 
  169. of Crowd Control.]

  172. Network Passwords
  173. =================

  176. If your computer is connected to a local network or you have 
  177. installed Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking, your "Primary Network
  178. Logon" must be set to "Windows Logon" for the Crowd Control 
  179. password protection to work properly.

  181. To check your setting, click the "Settings" item on the Start 
  182. Menu, select Control Panel, and then double click on the 
  183. "Network" icon.  Click on the drop-down box under the heading 
  184. "Primary Network Logon," and make sure that "Windows Logon" 
  185. is selected.  This selection will not affect your other network 
  186. settings or the operation of your network, even if your computer 
  187. is a "client" of another type of network server.
