Syncronys BigDisk 1.0 Demo Version ReadMe
=========================================
Thank you for evaluating BigDisk! This document contains
late-breaking information that is not found in the manual.
If you are viewing this in Notepad, maximize the notepad
Window. Carriage returns have been added to ensure that it
fits on a 640x480 display, and that the text doesn't run
off the edge of your window.
This ReadMe contains information on the following:
1. Removable Drives
2. Network Drives
3. BigDisk and Uninstaller Utilities
4. Automatic Redirection
5. Troubleshooting BigDisk
6. Contacting Syncronys
Note: This version of BigDisk is a demo version only, and
thus there is a limit on how much data can be relocated.
Initially you may relocate 100MB. If, at that point, you
choose to register the demo with us, you will allowed to
relocate and additional 100MB. There is no time limit.
1. Removable Drives
===================
BigDisk supports the use of removable drives as secondary
storage. However, it is important to note that once files
have been relocated to a removable disk, you should
NEVER remove that disk from the drive. If you remove a disk
that has relocated files on it, those files will show up as
zero-byte files. Re-inserting the disk will correct this
problem. If you do not re-insert the disk, data loss or
system instability may occur.
BigDisk was tested with the following removable drives:
Iomega JAZ
Iomega ZIP
SyQuest SyJet
SyQuest EZ-Drive 135
SyQuest EZ-Flyer 230
Please note that using slower drives (like ZIP drives) as
secondary space can adversely affect file system performance.
Also note that BigDisk always relocates to the drive with the
MOST free space. If you use a large drive like a JAZ or SyJet
drive, you may not want to use it as secondary space until your
other secondary drives are filled. (This is because fixed
disks are generally faster than JAZ and SyJet drives.)
2. Network Drives
=================
BigDisk does NOT support the use of network mapped drives as
secondary storage. However if you are using Novell Netware 4.x
and map drive letters from DOS, BigDisk may allow you to select
these drives. We do NOT recommend doing this, because there is
no way to guarantee that the network will be present the next
time you boot, and thus some files may not be accessible if the
network goes down. We are researching ways of safely supporting
network drives in the future.
3. BigDisk and Uninstaller Utilities
====================================
Uninstaller utilities like CyberMedia Uninstaller, Quarterdeck
CleanSweep, and IMSI WinDelete may be able to remove the BigDisk
program from your system, but they cannot restore relocated files
to their original location. Thus, uninstalling BigDisk using
these utilities can result in data loss.
BigDisk's own uninstaller will undo all relocations before
removing BigDisk.
4. Automatic Redirection
========================
Some applications may install files that need to be accessed
BEFORE Windows 95 completes the booting process. With "Redirect
New Files" ON, these files may get redirected. This can lead
to bootup errors. Although these errors are generally harmless,
if you do experience problems of this sort, you can always undo
the relocations using the Relocation tab in BigDisk Properties,
or you can use BDREPAIR.EXE. See the Troubleshooting section of
this document for more details.
5. Troubleshooting BigDisk
==========================
Files are missing during bootup
This can occur if a file in a relocated directory is accessed
before the BigDisk redirector software is loaded. Some
applications may load files during the boot procedure that are
not in a fixed directory and those files may get relocated to
another drive. The fix for this is to undo the relocation of
these files by using the relocation tab in the BigDisk Properties
dialog and then marking that directory permanent in the
Safety tab.
Restoring your system from MS-DOS
If for some reason your system does not boot into Windows
(for example, if you get an "Error loading IOS.VXD"), you can
restore your files to their original location from MS-DOS. Reboot
the machine and press F8 when you see "Starting Windows 95".
Select "Command Prompt Only". Go to the \Windows\System\IOSubSys
directory, and rename FREDIR.VXD to something like FREDIR.XXX.
Finally, use XCOPY32 to move the files back:
XCOPY32 D:\_FRDDAT_\*.* C:\*.* /S /E
Do this for EACH drive letter used for relocation.
(The example assumes relocated data is on your D: drive).
*** IMPORTANT *** Use XCOPY32.EXE, not XCOPY.EXE.
XCOPY32.EXE preserves long filenames.
Note that you can also use BDREPAIR.EXE to correct boot
problems.
