  1. ECSMail 2.x to Simeon 4.x Conversion Notes
  2.  
  3. This document describes the issues involved with upgrading from ECSMail 2.x
  4. to Simeon 4.x.
  5.  
  6. Local Folders
  7. -------------
  8.  
  9. ECSMail 2.x local folders (dawz format) can be viewed directly with Simeon
  10. 4.x. No importing or conversions are necessary. The dawz format is provided
  11. for backwards compatibility. Any new local folders created with Simeon 4.x
  12. will be in the mh format and ECSMail 2.x will not be able to view them..

  14. To access your ECSMail 2.x local folders do the following:
  15.  
  16.     a) From the File menu select New Message Service.
  17.     b) In the New Message Service dialog enter the following:
  18.         Service Type: Local (File) Folders.
  19.         Folder Location: the path to your ECSMail folders.
  20.         Typically this would be something like c:\ecs\folders\.
  21.         Be sure to enter the trailing \. This is very important.
  22.         Folder Prefix: Can be left blank. If you wish to remove the
  23.         path name from the folder display enter the same value as
  24.         entered in the folder path.
  25.     c) Press OK
  26.     d) Select View->Unsubscribed from the menu to enable the viewing of 
  27.        unsubscribed folders.
  28.     e) Expand the V2 message service by clicking on the '+' sign.  Your
  29.        V2.x folders will be displayed as unsubscribed.  If you wish to
  30.        subscribe to any of all of these folders simply select the folder
  31.        or folders and select Folder->Subscribe from the menu.

  33. Your V2.x folders can be accessed in the same manner as any other Simeon 4.x
  34. folder.  You may drag and drop message in and out of them as well as drag the
  35. folders themselves to other local or remote message services.  Any conversions
  36. necessary are done by Simeon.

  38. Note:
  39. Any Simeon 4 folder dragged into this V2 message service will not be converted
  40. into V2.x format.  The message service merely points to the location of the
  41. V2.x folders, it does not imply a particular folder format.

  43. Local Address Books
  44. -------------------

  46. Local address books created by ECSMail 2.x are not directly accessible to
  47. Simeon 4.x.  They must be imported into Simeon 4.x using the Address book
  48. import utility provided.

  50. To convert your old address book you must import it into the new format
  51. as follows:
  52.  
  53.     a) Start Simeon and open the address book window.
  54.     b) Select or create the book into which you wish to import your
  55.        V 2.x data. Do not open the book, simply click on it to select it.
  56.     c) Select Address/Import from the menu.  A file selection dialog
  57.        will be displayed. Go to the working directory for ECSMail 2.x.
  58.        The file you want will be called "lbook", select it and press OK.
  59.     d) A dialog will come up showing the entries as they are being 
  60.        imported.

  62. You must be very careful to select the correct file. Results are unpredictable 
  63. if  you select a file which is not in the ECSMail 2.x address book format.

  65. Phone Messages

  68. ECSMail 2.x phone messages can be viewed directly with Simeon 4.x.

  71. Virtual Folders
  72. ---------------

  74. ECSMail 2.x virtual folders functionality has been replaced by Message Groups
  75. in Simeon 4.x.  Unlike Virtual Folders, Message Groups are created on a per
  76. folder basis and allow sorting and conditional display.  ECSMail Virtual
  77. Folders are not converted into Simeon 4.x Message Groups.

  79. To create Message Groups for a folder in Simeon 4.x, select the folder
  80. and select New Message Group... from the File Menu.  See the on-line help
  81. in Simeon for more information.
