  6. What is Networked Impulse Tracker?
  7. ----------------------------------
  8.  
  9. Networked Impulse Tracker is simply that - a session of Impulse Tracker where
  10. multiple composers can all edit the same song at the same time! It may sound
  11. a little bizarre, but networked sessions can be both extremely fun and
  12. productive.
  13.

  15. Requirements
  16. ------------
  17.  
  18.         1. Impulse Tracker, 7 Apr 99 or later
  19.  
  20.         2. Impulse Tracker Network driver file. (*.NET)
  21.  
  22.         3. Some form of network supported by the network driver file.
  23.  
  24. To Use
  25. ------
  26. To initiate a Network session, Press Shift-ESC. A list of available drivers
  27. will be shown. Select one with Enter.
  28.  
  29.  
  30. ITIPX.NET
  31. ---------
  32.  
  33. ITIPX.NET is an IPX Network driver for Impulse Tracker. It is recommended that
  34. this is used over a LAN (ie. you will need a network card in your computer).
  35. Although Kali will work (IPX over the internet), performance will probably be
  36. unacceptable for most people through a modem.
  37.  
  38. The IPX driver *will not be stable* under Win95. Upgrade to Win98.
  39. To install IPX to run under Windows, go to Start Menu->Settings->Control Panel.
  40. Select Network, and under the Configuration Tab, press Add, then select
  41.    Protocol->Microsoft->IPX/SPX Compatible Protocol
  42.  
  43. The IPX driver will list the available sessions in the left hand box. Select
  44. a session to join by pressing Enter.
  45.  
  46. The Username that the IPX driver transmits is associated with each driver file.
  47. The public distribution identifies itself as "Unregistered". Different
  48. usernames are availble for US$10 each. Payment can be made via Kagi at
  49. http://order.kagi.com/?4ZM
  50.  
  51. Please specify a username, maximum length 15 characters, or else one will be
  52. chosen for you. Updated versions of the driver, if made, will be provided free
  53. of charge. However, changing your username will still cost $10.
  54.  
  55. 'Normal' usage of this driver should run quite stably. However, if you try hard
  56. to make it crash, I'm sure you will be able to.
  57.  
  58. Note that connections will be automatically dropped if queued packets fail to
  59. be transmitted for more than 10 seconds.
  60.  
  61. General Notes
  62. -------------
  63. Impulse Tracker supports a maximum of 4 users per session. Extra users will
  64. be automatically discarded.
  65.  
  66. Many functions have been disabled under network mode. You will receive warning
  67. messages in these cases.
  68.  
  69. Do *NOT* use hardware mixed drivers for networked sessions. This specifically
  70. means the AWE32, GUS and Interwave drivers. Since networked sessions can
  71. change samples 'behind your back', these drivers will not update correctly.
  72.  
  73. Contributors Additions
  74.   - IT215 file format saving. Note that this is an alternative compression
  75.       format and is often better, but not always. Public releases of IT214
  76.       Patch 1 and later can read IT215 compressed files. There is also a
  77.       version of MikIT that can read IT215 compression.
  78.   - Sample sorting enabled. On the sample/instrument list screens, files will
  79.       be priority sorted alphabetically if you don't move the cursor. If you
  80.       do move the cursor, then you can force a resort once all the files have
  81.       been loaded by pressing Alt-S.
  82.   - Reordering of order list with Alt-R while on the order list screen
  83.       (easier to try it out, than to try to explain it)
  84.   - Row lock in pattern editor if holding shift - very useful for chords
  85.     (ie. use Shift+note)

  214. IT212 Update - Special thanks go out to all those that did stability testing
  215.                of the beta versions of IT212.
  216.  
  217.   - Bug fix: "Available Samples" in the instrument loading screen will be
  218.              correct if you're loading an instrument from within a module.
  219.  
  220.   - Bug fix: Sample files will store default pan values.
  221.  
  222.   - Bug fix: Trying to show pattern data past the end of a pattern will
  223.              not crash IT anymore. This could have occurred before if the
  224.              number of rows in a pattern were reduced during playback, then
  225.              switching to the info page.
  226.  
  227.   - Bug fix: Deleting samples/instruments "within" a module has been disabled
  228.              (as it should be), so that the module itself cannot be deleted.
  229.  
  230.   - Bug fix: Default sample pan will override instrument pan whether "Old
  231.              Effects" is on or off.

  233.   - .669 Loader, since Snowman is collecting 'em :)
  234.     This loader hasn't been extensively tested, maily because Composd.Exe
  235.     will not run on my machine (64MB is "Not enough extended memory" ?!?! ).
  236.     Most songs should play though.. Please don't bug me to update the loader
  237.     any further - you won't get a reply.
  238.  
  239.   - *Much* better memory handling for patterns. EMM386 parameter H=255
  240.     should not be required in MOST cases now (you will only need it if
  241.     you use a large number of samples (ie. > 50) ). You should also have
  242.     more FreeMem to work with. Beta testers have noted that QEMM shows even
  243.     more stability problems in this version than previous versions - please
  244.     avoid QEMM as it DOES cause crashing for as yet unknown reasons. The old
  245.     memory allocation routines can still be found if you have EMS problems by
  246.     using /P2 on the command line.
  247.  
  248.   - Keyboard handling on instrument lists has been improved to handle
  249.     multiple keypresses/releases. (but not on sample list due to usability)
  250.  
  251.   - Default volume display in *NORMAL* (5 channel) pattern editor if you press
  252.     Ctrl-V. If you use a custom font, you will need to upgrade your font set
  253.     with FONTUPGR to see this properly.
  254.     Example:
  255.      C-4 01 .. ... <-- what volume is this??
  256.  
  257.     Press Ctrl-V:
  258.      C-4 01 [32] ... <-- it'll show that the default volume of
  259.                          sample/instrument 1 is 32.
  260.  
  261.     Alt-K has been upgraded to 'pick up' these default values. (So that you
  262.     can also slide from volume 0 to the sample's default without having to
  263.     explicitly key in the value).
  264.  
  265.   - Automatic filename extension replacement on Ctrl-S, so that if you press
  266.     Ctrl-S after loading a .MOD, .669, .MTM or .XM, the filename will be
  267.     automatically modified to have a .IT extension.
  268.  
  269.   - CDRom check for CACHE.IT? files. If you burn a CDRom of samples or
  270.     instruments, include the CACHE.ITI and CACHE.ITS files from IT211+ and
  271.     they should accelerate loading of sample and instrument names on all
  272.     future versions of IT.

  274.  
  275.   - 64 channel miniview on the info page. (note: doesn't show all fields)

  290.   - Soundcard Driver news
  291.     ■ Inserted a new algorithm into the direct-to-disk writer to remove
  292.       clicks at the end of samples in cases of Note Cut commands, Note Cut NNA
  293.       and instantaneous sample changes in sample mode. For those who have
  294.       sent me money and would like to receive the upgrade, EMail me.
  295.     ■ ESS ES1868 AudioDrive driver. This will NOT support any other ESS
  296.       chipsets than the ES1868. Do not write to me asking for support for
  297.       other ESS chips unless you are willing to buy me a card (or send me
  298.       the money to do so). This driver supports mixing rates up to 56.8kHz
  299.       (16 bit, stereo) and it also supports MIDI In.
  300.     ■ AWE32 driver update: More accurate tempo control and less clicks under
  301.                            Win95
  302.     ■ TB Tropez users: I received an EMail telling me that the GUSMAX drivers
  303.                        were working fully with the TB Tropez cards! See how
  304.                        it works...
  305.     ■ Sound drivers for the ST97 and EWS64 coming... as soon as I get them
  306.       working....
  307.  
  308.     Other news: It seems that some people really don't care how much work
  309.                 I've put into IT - Warez versions of the full ITWAV.DRV
  310.                 are being sought after. Let me make this clear: Distribution
  311.                 of the full version of ITWAV.DRV is NOT appreciated and if I
  312.                 ever find the full version anywhere, IT will no longer be
  313.                 publically released.

  316. IT211 Update - Not so much this time, as I have been working full time, so
  317.                since IT has been sitting on my HDD without changes for a
  318.                couple of weeks, I decided to release the update anyway.
  319.  
  320.   - Saving a song with Ctrl-S or from the menu will not prompt about
  321.     'overwriting' the file.
  322.  
  323.   - Compatibility Gxx volume fadeout fixed.
  324.  
  325.   - Matrox autodetection fixed to set mouse cursor properly also.
  326.  
  327.   - You can press 'L' or 'R' on the "load stereo sample" prompt to select
  328.     left or right channels.
  329.  
  330.   - Increased file-header 'load-buffer' so that more Sound Forge .WAV files
  331.     should be recognised.
  332.  
  333.   - Bug fix to: swap samples/instruments, insert/remove sample/instrument
  334.                 and update instrument *could* have caused the current
  335.                 editing pattern to skip being modified.

  337.   - Bug fix: Pressing delete on a non-note column in template mode should
  338.              work as expected.

  340.   - Note: If you delete your old IT.CFG files and run IT afresh, you'll
  341.           get an extra 'line' on the infopage to work with.

  343.   - .KRZ sample-library loader. Note that this does NOT support multiple
  344.     .KR* files (ie. .KR1, .KR2, .KR3). To use these files, you will have
  345.     to run MERGEKRZ.EXE (supplied) to create a single .KRZ file.

  348.   - .PAT sample-library loader.
  349.  
  350.   - Creating a 'host instrument' after loading a sample will first attempt
  351.     to use an instrument of the same number as the sample before finding
  352.     the first empty instrument.

  354.   - Holding down Caps Lock in the pattern editor will allow you to play
  355.     notes without entering them into the patterns.
  356.  
  357.   Driver modifications
  358.   - Bug fix for SB16 drivers which caused patterns not to 'play'. For those
  359.     that still have troubles with the SB16 driver, read DRIVERS.TXT
  360.   - For those of you who couldn't get the GUSMAX driver working, check out
  361.      DRIVERS.TXT also :)
  362.   - The ITWAV.DRV file now writes proper .WAV files instead of .RAW
  363.   - ITAWE32.DRV uses floating point calculations to reduce memory usage.
  364.     ITAWE32B.DRV (the old driver) still exists for people who don't have
  365.                  math coprocessors

  368. IT210 Update - some MAJOR fixes here.
  369.  
  370.   - Approximate song length on Ctrl-P. Note that *some* soundcards will
  371.   require reinitialisation after this (almost all won't). The time given
  372.   is the 'ideal' time for the playback of the song and should correspond
  373.   *exactly* to GUS/AWE non-IRQ playback times.
  374.  
  375.   - A few more player bug fixes for XM compatibility
  376.  
  377.   - IT won't crash if you try to load instruments from an 'empty' drive
  378.     (eg. disk not inserted or no files present)
  379.  
  380.   - In the pattern editor, Insert/Delete, Note Cut/Note Off/Note Delete
  381.     are all 'template aware' - they will span more than 1 channel if
  382.     you are editing in template mode and the template has height 1.
  383.     Also, 'picking up' data with Enter will turn off Template mode's except
  384.     for "Template-Notes Only"
  385.  
  386.   - Volume column effects Ex/Fx/Gx in combination with effect Jxx should
  387.     operate as expected now.
  388.  
  389.   - Deleting a file on the instrument list will update the instrument cache
  390.     file appropriately.
  391.  
  392.   - Sample/Instrument cache file time check fixed.
  393.  
  394.   - Slight modification to the handling of SBx commands to prevent
  395.     infinite loops.
  396.  
  397.   - Simple crash recovery mechanism should you ever encounter a problem.
  398.     (You shouldn't need it!) This is on Ctrl-Alt-Del in DOS or
  399.     Ctrl-Alt-Ins in Windows. It is not guaranteed to work, but if it works
  400.     once, then I guess that the amount of time I spent on it was worth it
  401.     (~10 minutes).
  402.  
  403.     For the technically minded lot, what it does is it tries to 'kick start'
  404.     the tracker again directly from the keyboard interrupt handler.
  405.  
  406.   - Loading a stereo WAV file will cause a pop-up menu to appear to select
  407.     loading the left or right channels.
  408.  
  409.   - GUSMAX users interested in using software mixing, check out DRIVERS.TXT
  410.  
  411.   - Memory corruption error found and fixed which produced 3-sets of invalid
  412.     values in the order list/instruments (main reason for this release!)
  413.  
  414. IT209 Update
  415.

  417.    If you have your own custom font file, you will need to change character
  418.    number 184 to 190. If you have used one of the 'standard' font sets, you

  433.   of using a 'set pan' effect on that row - the channel will be set to the
  434.   default sample pan.

  470.  - ";" and "'" made to change the samples/instrument in the pattern editor

  473.  - Dragging mouse nodes past boundaries is more accurate.

  475.  - "Channel details" display (on the infopage) *can* show the 64th channel

  481.  - Message system hooked to a timer (ie. all those messages that appear
  482.    towards the top of the screen).. so that they will last a consistent

  485.  - Player Improvement: NNA mechanism will eliminate channels on two extra
  486.                        conditions now (no difference to playback, but should
  487.                        maximise channel usage)

  648.               SB16's MIDI input is somewhat 'iffy'. If you stop receiving
  649.               MIDI input, you need to reinit the soundcard (Ctrl-I) (possibly
  650.               several times). I don't know why it does this. Dont' write
  651.               to me about it, 'cos I have spent MANY MANY hours on this little
  652.               problem and I don't want to know about it. Also, in Win95, I
  653.               found it necessary to change my SB16's configuration to EXCLUDE
  654.               the MIDI port (and I used a Microsoft MPU401 driver instead),
  655.               otherwise MIDI input was ignored.
