- I. What is Speech Compatibility Mode?
-
- Speech compatibility mode is a new feature in the Blue Wave
- Offline Mail Reader v2.10. It allows blind and visually impaired
- computer users to use the Blue Wave Offline Mail Reader with very
- little configuration needed to the speech software. Actually,
- there is only one thing that needs to be set in all speech
- packages. Make sure your up and down arrow keys are set up to
- read the whole line. How it works is the Blue Wave Offline Mail
- Reader uses BIOS calls in specific places in the reader and direct
- video calls are used everywhere else. Also, the hardware cursor
- has been setup to follow all the menu bars in Blue Wave. So what
- does that mean? It means that you can use Blue Wave with out any
- special lightbar configurations in your speech packages.
-
- II. Starting the Blue Wave Offline Mail Reader
-
- When you run The Blue Wave Offline Mail Reader for the first
- time, you need to start it up with the "-s" command line switch.
- Example: bwave -s
-
- From there, follow the installation prompts. See the file BWAVE.DOC
- for complete installation instructions.
-
- After you finish installing the Blue Wave Offline Mail Reader,
- you will want to make the speech mode come up by default. This way,
- you need not use the "-s" command line everytime you bring up the
- reader. You do this by following the steps outlined below.
-
- 1. If you are not already in the reader, start it up by typing
- "BWAVE -s".
-
- 2. Press "S" to enter the system configuration menu.
-
- 3. Press "V" to go in to the reader's video configuration mode.
-
- 4. Press "S" to turn speech compatibility mode on.
-
- 5. Press the ESCape key three times and you will hear Blue Wave say
- "Permanently save your configuration?". Answer "Y", and you
- should hear the reader say "Configuration Saved".
-
-
- III. Special Keys
-
- There has been a special global key setup in the reader to
- read parts of the text that you might not want read all of the
- time. This key is the question mark key or "?". When you press
- this at some of the selection windows, additional information will
- be read such as commands or in the message viewing window you can
- read the message header over again. In the view message window,
- you can also use the slash mark key or "/" to read the message
- flags, (Rcv'd, Private, Crash), and message marks (see the Blue Wave
- documentation for information on message marking).
