  33.   The Watchman(tm) is a background-working program that 'patrolls'
  34.   the Windows 95/NT desktop and closes any window  he has been told 
  35.   to close. Whenever he founds a window whose main title or code 
  36.   -we will see what that means later- exists in his data file he
  37.   closes it. 
  38.  
  39.   We are talking about closing WINDOWS. What matters here are
  40.   window descriptions, i.e. the exact words that appear in the
  41.   title bar of a given window.

  44.   PURPOSE, UTILITY----------------------------

  47.   Situation 1
  48.  
  49.   Do you have any children? Do they use the computer? They play
  50.   with many games, I bet they do. But how to avoid children from
  51.   clicking -by accident, or not- in your 'Nudity' folder? Or what
  52.   could you do to make sure they do not wipe off your 'c:\windows'
  53.   directory while you leave them alone to answer the door? Now you
  54.   know how to avoid that. Leave 'The Watchman' running and he will
  55.   close any 'forbidden' window. You could leave your children 
  56.   playing with the computer and go to the toilet without fearing
  57.   for your data or for the their mental safety.

  62.   Imagine you want to limit the access to the Internet to somebody.
  63.   Or just limit the access to a given internet address. Just take 
  64.   note of the complete window name, e.g. 'Playboy - Microsoft Internet
  65.   Explorer', and configure The Watchman to ban the access to
  66.   that particular window. You can also ban the access to a concrete
  67.   directory with the Explorer by taking note of the window name, e.g. 
  68.   'Exploring - Temp', etc. However, if you want to completely ban the
  69.   access to Internet you will have to use WINDOW CODES (keep reading).

  118.   HOW IT WORKS

  122.   ABOUT WINDOW NAMES AND WINDOW CODES---------------------
  123.

  125.   The phrase 'WINDOW NAME' refers to the exact words -the case doesn't
  126.   matter- you see at the top bar of a window. For example, if you open
  127.   the WordPad you will see the following window name:
  128.  
  129.   'Document - WordPad'
  130.  
  131.   But now open any file on the WordPad. You will see another title
  132.   or WINDOW NAME:
  133.  
  134.   'Ode to Bill.doc - WordPad'
  135.  
  136.   As you see WINDOW NAME change constantly when you open new files, 
  137.   so The Watchman(tm) will not recognise a program whose main window 
  138.   has changed because its WINDOW NAME will not coincide with the name
  139.   you gave in the first place.

  141.   Is there anything more stable than window names? Sure, WINDOW CODES.
  142.   These are labels that identify a program/window no matter what you 
  143.   do. Thus, if you want to be completely sure a program is always
  144.   closed you need to use WINDOW CODES. Here are some examples you can

  158.   USING THE WATCHMAN----------------------------

  161.   Once you know which window/program do you want to protect, run
  162.   The Watchman. A small window will appear. Move your mouse pointer
  163.   to the window. The pointer will become a hand. Click on the image.
  164. > You will be asked a password. The default password is 'socrates'.

  167.   The popup menu------

  170.   +. 'Change the password'
  171.    
  172.       You will be asked for a password whenever you try to exit
  173.       the program, or click on the main window to access the popup
  174.       menu. You may change the password by choosing this option in
  175.       the pop-up menu.

  178.   +. 'Edit window data file'
  179.  
  180.       When you want to add or change a WINDOW NAME or WINDOW
  181.       CODE you can do so by using this option. However, you may 
  182.       edit the text file 'WDATA.INI' with your favourite text
  183.       editor. It is important that you read and follow the 
  184.       instructions you find in there.

  186. >     Only 5 WINDOW NAMES are allowed in the SHAREWARE version.

  191.       Here you can add up to two different WINDOW NAMES or WINDOW
  192.       CODES, but these will have priority over the other ones, 
  193.       that is, The Watchman will close these windows faster.
  194.       Also, by using these options you can change the configuration 
  195.       'on the fly', i.e. without restarting the main program.

  203.       This option runs the setup program, which is very 
  204.       straightforward.

  206.       You may access the setup from inside The Watchman(tm)
  207.       or directly from the Explorer, it doesn't matter.
  208.       However, in order to activate any change from the setup 
  209.       you have to restart The Watchman.

  211.       The wsetup provides you with 4 options:

  214.       +. 'Write a detailed report'
  215.     
  216.           If activated, The Watchman creates a report/log
  217.           with all the windows he closes and the exact
  218.           time every window was closed.
  219.  
  220.       +. 'Play a disgusting sound'
  221.  
  222.           If activated, The Watchman plays a wav file named
  223.           'smack.wav' every time he closes a window. You can 
  224.           change the default sound into your favourite by 
  225.           renaming it to the default name.

  227.       +. 'Hide The Watchman window'
  228.  
  229.           If activated, The Watchman appears minimized on
  230.           the taskbar. To maximize the program click on the
  231.           corresponding icon that rests on the right side of
  232.           the taskbar.

  234.       +. 'Auto-startup mode'

  236.           If activated, The Watchman will be run when Windows
  237.           starts.

  240.   +. 'Wcodegrab module'

  242.       By using this module, writing down WINDOW NAMES - OR CODES 
  243.       (only the REGISTERED version) - is much more easy. Once the
  244.       module window appears just click on the window/program you
  245.       want to protect. Its WINDOW NAME will be written in WDATA.INI.
  246.       Remember you can edit this file manually if you want to.
