+ THE WATCHMAN v1.3 + 'Ban the access to any program easily'
⌐ Anfibia 1997 'No huge setups to get through, no nuisances'

NEW! - SHAREWARE Software - You have 30 days to evaluate this product.
#######################################################################
SHAREWARE means:
You are permitted to try this software on your system (for 30 days)
without any cost or obligation. Payment is required if you find
this software to be useful or if you wish to continue using this
software beyond the evaluation (trial) period.
#######################################################################
Note: the default password is 'socrates' (case doesn't matter)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
DESCRIPTION
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
If what you need is a simple program and fast for 'light' security
keep reading.
The Watchman(tm) is a background-working program that 'patrolls'
the Windows 95/NT desktop and closes any window he has been told
to close. Whenever he founds a window whose main title or code
-we will see what that means later- exists in his data file he
closes it.
We are talking about closing WINDOWS. What matters here are
window descriptions, i.e. the exact words that appear in the
title bar of a given window.
PURPOSE, UTILITY----------------------------
Situation 1
Do you have any children? Do they use the computer? They play
with many games, I bet they do. But how to avoid children from
clicking -by accident, or not- in your 'Nudity' folder? Or what
could you do to make sure they do not wipe off your 'c:\windows'
directory while you leave them alone to answer the door? Now you
know how to avoid that. Leave 'The Watchman' running and he will
close any 'forbidden' window. You could leave your children
playing with the computer and go to the toilet without fearing
for your data or for the their mental safety.
Situation 2
Imagine you want to limit the access to the Internet to somebody.
Or just limit the access to a given internet address. Just take
note of the complete window name, e.g. 'Playboy - Microsoft Internet
Explorer', and configure The Watchman to ban the access to
that particular window. You can also ban the access to a concrete
directory with the Explorer by taking note of the window name, e.g.
'Exploring - Temp', etc. However, if you want to completely ban the
access to Internet you will have to use WINDOW CODES (keep reading).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
FEATURES
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
('*' means only available for the registered version)
1. Very, and I mean VERY, easy to use
2. Strong password protection
3. Full Windows 95/NT environment integration
3.1 No need to install huge DLLs or change the system
behaviour in any way as most security programs do.
4. Smart setup that provides you with three options:
4.1 Keep a log of windows closed
4.2 Hide the main window on the taskbar
4.3 Play an alarm every time a window is closed
4.4 Auto start-up option
* 5. Possibility to protect (close) more than 7 windows
* 5.1 Up to 4 fast-closing (high-priority) window 'sockets'
* 6. Ability to GET WINDOW CODES (to close any window without
resistance)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
REQUIREMENTS
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nothing special.
To UNINSTALL use the normal procedure (Add/remove programs).
=======================================================================
HOW IT WORKS
=======================================================================
ABOUT WINDOW NAMES AND WINDOW CODES---------------------
The phrase 'WINDOW NAME' refers to the exact words -the case doesn't
matter- you see at the top bar of a window. For example, if you open
the WordPad you will see the following window name:
'Document - WordPad'
But now open any file on the WordPad. You will see another title
or WINDOW NAME:
'Ode to Bill.doc - WordPad'
As you see WINDOW NAME change constantly when you open new files,
so The Watchman(tm) will not recognise a program whose main window
has changed because its WINDOW NAME will not coincide with the name
you gave in the first place.
Is there anything more stable than window names? Sure, WINDOW CODES.
These are labels that identify a program/window no matter what you
do. Thus, if you want to be completely sure a program is always
closed you need to use WINDOW CODES. Here are some examples you can
try:
#Afx:8:1526:0:2917 Acrobat Reader 3.0
#Notepad Notepad
#scndSWEBUZWindow Mod4Win 2.30
#Progressive Networks RVPlayer Real Player 4.0
#WordPadClass WordPad
#Afx:400000:8:1526:0:2a27 Paint Shop Pro 4.12
USING THE WATCHMAN----------------------------
Once you know which window/program do you want to protect, run
The Watchman. A small window will appear. Move your mouse pointer
to the window. The pointer will become a hand. Click on the image.
> You will be asked a password. The default password is 'socrates'.
The popup menu------
+. 'Change the password'
You will be asked for a password whenever you try to exit
the program, or click on the main window to access the popup
menu. You may change the password by choosing this option in
the pop-up menu.
+. 'Edit window data file'
When you want to add or change a WINDOW NAME or WINDOW
CODE you can do so by using this option. However, you may
edit the text file 'WDATA.INI' with your favourite text
editor. It is important that you read and follow the
instructions you find in there.
> Only 5 WINDOW NAMES are allowed in the SHAREWARE version.
+. 'New high-priority window #1,#2'
Here you can add up to two different WINDOW NAMES or WINDOW
CODES, but these will have priority over the other ones,
that is, The Watchman will close these windows faster.
Also, by using these options you can change the configuration
'on the fly', i.e. without restarting the main program.
> Only 2 high-priority windows are allowed in the SHAREWARE vs.
+. 'Setup'
This option runs the setup program, which is very
straightforward.
You may access the setup from inside The Watchman(tm)
or directly from the Explorer, it doesn't matter.
However, in order to activate any change from the setup
you have to restart The Watchman.
The wsetup provides you with 4 options:
+. 'Write a detailed report'
If activated, The Watchman creates a report/log
with all the windows he closes and the exact
time every window was closed.
+. 'Play a disgusting sound'
If activated, The Watchman plays a wav file named
'smack.wav' every time he closes a window. You can
change the default sound into your favourite by
renaming it to the default name.
+. 'Hide The Watchman window'
If activated, The Watchman appears minimized on
the taskbar. To maximize the program click on the
corresponding icon that rests on the right side of
the taskbar.
+. 'Auto-startup mode'
If activated, The Watchman will be run when Windows
starts.
+. 'Wcodegrab module'
By using this module, writing down WINDOW NAMES - OR CODES
(only the REGISTERED version) - is much more easy. Once the
module window appears just click on the window/program you
want to protect. Its WINDOW NAME will be written in WDATA.INI.
Remember you can edit this file manually if you want to.
