  16. 1. About BestCrypt NP software
  17. ------------------------------

  19. BestCrypt NP software supports encrypted logical disks for Windows 95
  20. computers and works with all kinds of media, including network-accessible
  21. disks.

  23. How does BestCrypt NP work? BestCrypt NP creates a pre-encrypted file called
  24. a container. This container is created by an encryption algorithm (Blowfish,
  25. GOST28147-89 or DES) using the key generated from the user password. In
  26. addition, BestCrypt NP creates a logical disk. The container is linked to
  27. a logical disk, and the disk is opened for access using the unique container
  28. password. All data stored in the logical disk are stored in the container in
  29. an encrypted form and transparently accessible for an authorized person.

  32. 2. About BestCrypt NP system installation
  33. -----------------------------------------

  35. The Setup program copies all necessary files to your hard disk and inserts
  36. needed lines into the Windows95 Registry database.
  37.  
  38. To install the BestCrypt NP system run the SETUP.EXE program. It is
  39. recommended that you exit all Windows programs before running Setup.

  41. The BestCrypt Setup program uses the standard Windows95 method to install
  42. software and provides necessary explanation of all the installation's
  43. steps.  The only default information the user may want to change during 
  44. installation is the Folder name for BestCrypt NP software and the 
  45. Directory name where to place the BestCrypt NP files.

  47. All dialog windows of the Setup programs have a similar appearance and
  48. have the following buttons:

  51. Cancel - click this button to abort installation
  52. Next - click this button to proceed with installation
  53. Back - click this button to return to the previous step of installation
  54.  
  55. After a successful installation Setup will ask you to restart your computer.
  56. This is required because the BestCrypt NP drivers will need to be loaded
  57. into the computer memory before you begin to use the BestCrypt NP system.

  59. Note: The BestCrypt NP Setup program also writes information to the
  60. Windows95 Registry database, places virtual drivers in the SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS
  61. system directory, and prepares the file for the uninstall procedure. Please 
  62. do not make any manual manipulations to install or uninstall BestCrypt NP
  63. software to prevent the appearance of unused garbage software in the system
  64. directory or unused strings in the Registry database.

  68. 2. If you have file-containers created by a previous version of BestCrypt

  71. Containers of BestCrypt NP software are compatible with BestCrypt 3.x
  72. containers. Hence, the user may copy BestCrypt NP containers from Windows95
  73. computers to DOS or Windows 3.xx computers and access the data using
  74. BestCrypt 3.x software.

  76. NOTE: The 'Read-only' attribute of the file-container should be set if you
  77. are going to use the container with BestCrypt 3.x, and this attribute
  78. should be reset if you use the container with BestCrypt NP software.

  82. 4. Wiping free disk space - recommendation
  83. ------------------------------------------

  85. Please take into account that when you move your sensitive files from 
  86. conventional disks to BestCrypt NP logical disks, the operating system
  87. (Windows 95) won't erase your files' contents from the disk - it will 
  88. delete only 'references' to them from the FAT (Fat Allocation Table).

  90. To make it impossible to restore deleted files from your disk, you need
  91. to run a wiping utility to erase information from disk sectors that are
  92. currently marked as free, but may contain previously written sensitive
  93. data.

  95. You may run the BestCrypt NP wiping utility from the BestCrypt NP
  96. Control Panel or from Windows 95 Explorer. After installing the 
  97. BestCrypt NP system you will find the command "Wipe free space" in
  98. Explorer if you call up the context menu (by pressing the right mouse
  99. button) for the drive you would like to wipe.
