  3.     C_FIX.EXE and W_FIX.EXE are copyrighted 1996 by RSE Software and may 
  4.     not be modified in any way.

  7.     ** Purpose **
  8.  
  9.     C_FIX.EXE and W_FIX.EXE modify WIN.COM and COMMAND.COM so that 
  10.     whenever these files are run they also attempt to run Magic Folders.
  11.     As long as someone boots from your hard disk, and not from a floppy, 
  12.     this virtually guarantees that Magic Folders will always be loaded 
  13.     and protecting your files.  It will also protect your files even if 
  14.     the user boots from a floppy and then starts Windows.  
  15.  
  16.     ( BTW, you can protect against a floppy boot if your BIOS allows 
  17.     password protection.  Simply configure your BIOS to always boot from 
  18.     C: and then use the BIOS password feature to assure no one but 
  19.     yourself can get in and change the BIOS to attempt to boot from A:.  
  20.     Remember tho, that if something does happen and you need to boot from 
  21.     a floppy you must go back in and change your BIOS to boot from A: so 
  22.     the floppy boot will work.)

  25.     ** IMPORTANT **
  26.  
  27.     We don't support these conversion programs in any way. You use them 
  28.     entirely at your own risk.  Do not use these programs unless you 
  29.     agree to accept all the risks of doing so and agree not to contact us 
  30.     regarding technical support.  Why?
  31.  
  32.     First, we don't want to deal with those who will convert their 
  33.     COMMAND.COM and WIN.COM files and then lose the backups of the 
  34.     originals or will proceed without reading and following the 
  35.     instructions. 
  36.     
  37.     Secondly, Magic Folders doesn't require converted WIN.COM and 
  38.     COMMAND.COM files to be effective.  There are other ways of making it 
  39.     almost as secure.  See "Help" within Magic Folders for details.  
  40.     We're just releasing these because of much arm twisting by our 
  41.     customers. 
  42.  
  43.     Thirdly, COMMAND.COM and WIN.COM are files we don't feel comfortable 
  44.     encouraging people to modify.  Your system is worthless without these 
  45.     files.  You better make backups of the originals in case the modified 
  46.     versions don't work.                  
  47.  
  48.     Fourth, with a fully supported program we do an extensive beta test 
  49.     where others diligently test the software prior to its release to the 
  50.     public.  This is not the case with this software.
  51.     
  52.     Now that I've scared you to death, let me say that there really isn't 
  53.     much danger in using these programs as long as you have backups you 
  54.     can restore if the converted programs don't work.
  55.

  57.     ** Conversion Instructions **
  58.  
  59.     Don't convert your WIN.COM and COMMAND.COM files until you've had 
  60.     Magic Folders running long enough to be sure it's working as you want 
  61.     it to.  No use going thru all this if you're going to uninstall it 
  62.     anyway. 
  63.  
  64.     1.  Make sure you have a bootable floppy.  Test it.
  65.         
  66.     2.  Copy MF.EXE to one of the hidden folders on your hard disk and 
  67.     rename it, keeping the .EXE extension.  For example you might copy 
  68.     MF.EXE to C:\HIDFOLDER\VIDCTRL.EXE.  To protect if further you may 
  69.     also want to give it a SYSTEM, READ-ONLY, and HIDDEN attribute.  This 
  70.     file is the weak link.  If it's deleted then Magic Folders won't 
  71.     load.  Jot down the complete pathname of this copied-renamed MF.EXE 
  72.     file as you will need it when you run the conversion programs. 
  73.     
  74.     3.  Find each occurrence of COMMAND.COM on your hard disk.  You'll 
  75.     most likely find copies in C:\, your DOS or MSDOS directory, and your 
  76.     \WINDOWS directory.  But use File Manager or Explorer to search 
  77.     everywhere. 
  78.  
  79.     4.  Make backups of all the COMMAND.COM files you find, noting which 
  80.     goes where so you can restore them if need be.
  81.  
  82.     5.  Go to DOS and go to each directory and run C_FIX.EXE (or 
  83.     W_FIX.EXE to convert WIN.COM) and follow the instructions.  (If you 
  84.     put C_FIX.EXE and W_FIX.EXE in one of your PATH directories then 
  85.     you can run them anywhere without having to specify their full 
  86.     pathnames.) 
  87.  
  88.     Do steps 3-5 for WIN.COM also.
  89.  
  90.  
  91.     ** Multi-Boot Systems **
  92.  
  93.     If you have multiple boot options (including the "Boot to previous 
  94.     version of DOS" in Win95) then boot to each option and perform the 
  95.     above for each option - USING A SEPARATE BACKUP DISK FOR EACH BOOT 
  96.     OPTION.  Don't worry about converting a file more than once.  The 
  97.     conversion programs check for that.

  100.     ** Virus Scanning Options **
  101.         
  102.     If you have virus scanning software you should disable it prior to 
  103.     running the conversion programs.  Your virus scanning program may 
  104.     also flag the modified files as being infected by a virus.  There 
  105.     should be a way to make your virus program readjust it's records so 
  106.     it accepts the converted files as legitimate.  Once your program 
  107.     accepts the converted programs as being legit, don't dismiss future 
  108.     virus warnings as they may be real.

  111.     ** Testing **
  112.  
  113.     Once the conversions are made then REM out the line in your 
  114.     AUTOEXEC.BAT file that runs MF.EXE.  If you have Win95 then also REM 
  115.     out the line in SYSTEM.INI in the [386enh] section that states 
  116.     "device=MF.EXE", then reboot and see if Magic Folders works as it 
  117.     should.  If it does then also check all your other boot options 
  118.     (including "Safe Boot" in Win95).  If Magic Folders gets loaded 
  119.     correctly then you can remove the REMmed out lines reference earlier.
  120.  
  121.     When Magic Folders is loaded by your converted WIN.COM and 
  122.     COMMAND.COM files it is sometimes loaded into conventional memory and 
  123.     not high memory.  That means that in DOS you may have 4K less 
  124.     conventional memory.  It's not much but I thought you'd want to know.  
  125.     The way around this is to continue to load Magic Folders from your 
  126.     AUTOEXEC.BAT file using the LH command and just use the conversions 
  127.     as a backup in case someone modifies the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

  130.     ** Problems? **
  131.  
  132.     If things go wrong:  Run RESTORE from the backup disk the conversion 
  133.     programs made.  If that doesn't work then restore the originals from 
  134.     the backup disk you made prior to running the conversion programs.  
  135.  
  136.     If you have multiple boot options then boot to each option and run 
  137.     RESTORE from the backup disk you created for that boot option.
  138.  
  139.     If Magic Folders loads all the time except during Win95 safe mode 
  140.     then WIN.COM hasn't been converted.
  141.

  143.     ** Uninstalling Magic Folders **
  144.  
  145.     DISABLE on your KeyDisk and the "Uninstall" option in Magic Folders 
  146.     will obviously not restore your original COMMAND.COM and WIN.COM 
  147.     files.  You will need to do that yourself as described in the 
  148.     previous section.
  149.     
  150.  
  151.     ** Known problems **
  152.  
  153.     If using Win95 and you attempt to run WIN.COM from within Windows 
  154.     (I don't know why anyone would want to do this....) then the message 
  155.     that should say "Windows is already loaded" is scrambled and comes 
  156.     out as nonsense.
  157.  
  158.     This is the only problem we've noted to date but that doesn't mean 
  159.     there aren't others.  If you encounter others please let us know by 
  160.     sending e-mail to convert@pc-magic.com so that we can update this 
  161.     list.
