  2. Installation Information For Communicator 4.04
  3. ======================================================================

  5. The recommended way to install this software is to use 'ns-install',
  6. a relatively simple Bourne shell script that will properly extract
  7. and install all the files now present in this release.  It also runs
  8. a command ('vreg') that enables you to receive future maintenance
  9. releases and product updates for individual components that might
  10. change between major product revisions.  It does this by creating
  11. or updating a small file to keep track of the product name, version,
  12. and installation directory.  This information is not broadcast to any
  13. external entity (including Netscape), and is used only by Communicator.

  15. If you choose not to use 'ns-install', the following steps will help
  16. you manually install the contents of this release (or rearrange the
  17. contents in order to re-package them using another installer format,
  18. such as RPM):
  19.  
  20.  1) create the directory in which you want the release to live (we
  21.     will assume /usr/local/netscape for the purposes of this example)
  22.  
  23.  2) mv *.nif /usr/local/netscape
  24.  
  25.  3) mv *.jar /usr/local/netscape/java/classes
  26.  
  27.  4) mv vreg /usr/local/netscape  (if you want ASD (i.e., "push") to work)
  28.  
  29.  5) cd /usr/local/netscape
  30.  
  31.  6) Extract the contents of each .nif file with 'gzip -dc file | tar -xf -'.

  33. Do this if you don't have a .netscape directory and have never used
  34. the product before:
  35.  
  36.  7) mv bookmark.htm ~/.netscape/bookmarks.html  (or use ln -s)

  38. The following step is optional (see above):

  40.  8) echo 'Communicator,4.04.0.97310,/usr/local/netscape' > /tmp/infile
  41.     vreg /usr/local/netscape/registry /tmp/infile

  45. It is recommended that you make use of the MOZILLA_HOME environment
  46. variable in your .cshrc, .profile, or equivalent.  MOZILLA_HOME should
  47. be set to the directory in which you installed Communicator.

  49. For example, 'setenv MOZILLA_HOME /usr/local/netscape'.
  50.  
  51. If you intend to move the 'netscape' binary into another directory
  52. (like /usr/local/bin), then you must set MOZILLA_HOME in order for
  53. Communicator to find all of its components.  (MOZILLA_HOME would be
  54. set to the installation directory in this case, NOT the directory in
  55. which the binary resides.)
