  1.        How to obtain updates to the shareware version over the net:
  2.  
  3. Updates to F-PROT consist of two distinct files.
  4.  
  5.    fp-xxx.zip   This file is updated as necessary, maybe every one or two
  6.                 months.  It contains the DOS version of F-PROT, the
  7.                 F-MACROW program, F-STOPW and the current virus definition
  8.                 files at the time of the creation of the file.
  9.  
  10.    fp-def.zip   This file is updated much more frequently, even several
  11.                 times per week.  It contains just two files - the latest
  12.                 versions of the virus definition files (SIGN.DEF and
  13.                 MACRO.DEF).  At the moment, this file is only available
  14.                 directly from us (ftp.complex.is), and any site that
  15.                 mirrors our FTP site, but that may change soon.
  16.  
  17. If you have FTP access, you can always get the current version of F-PROT by
  18. anonymous FTP from a number of sites.  Our primary method of distribution
  19. is through Simtel and Garbo, and all "mirrors" of those sites should always
  20. carry an up-to-date version of F-PROT.

  116. For people in remote corners of the world, without reliable FTP or WWW
  117. access, we offer the "F-PROT by E-mail" service.
  118.  
  119. To use this service, you MUST be able to handle multiple-part uu-, xx-
  120. or mime-encoded mail messages.  Please do not waste your (and ours) time by
  121. using this service if you do not already have the software to decode such
  122. messages, and keep in mind that this service is intended for those who
  123. have no other alternative...that is, no FTP or WWW access.
  124.  
  125. To use this service you send an E-mail message to f-prot-update@complex.is
  126. This is an automated mail server.  No human will see your message, and if
  127. it does not match the format described below, the mail server will just
  128. respond with a standard help message.
  129.  
  130. For now the following commands are accepted by the mail server. 
  131.  
  132. Please note that the commands must be in the body of the message, not in
  133. the subject line or the header.
  134.  
  135. send-file: name
  136. send-as: form
  137. send-part: part_num
  138. send-size: size_in_kilobytes
  139. send-version
  140. subscribe notice
  141. unsubscribe notice
  142. check notice
  143.  
  144. The 'send-file' command may be omitted.  In that case, the mail server
  145. will send the current version of F-PROT (the FP-xxx.ZIP file). If
  146. specified, it must have one of the following values: 'f-prot' or 'fp-def'.
  147.  
  148. The 'send-as' command signifies the encoding that should be used in sending
  149. the file by E-mail.  'form' must be one of: 'uue', 'xxe' or 'mime'.
  150.  
  151. If the 'send-as' command is 'mime', F-PROT will be sent as a MIME message
  152. with Content-Type: message/partial.
  153.  
  154. send-part: requests transmission of a specific part.  You should only use
  155. this command if you are requesting re-transmission of a corrupted part.
  156.  
  157. send-size: requests that a specific size (in KB) is used for each part.
  158. The size must be between 20 and 60.  
  159.  
  160. send-version is used to check which version is currently available.  Using
  161. "finger f-prot@complex.is" is a better method, however.
  162.

  165. To get an uuencoded copy of the current version of F-PROT, send a message
  166. containing the following in the body to 'f-prot-update@complex.is' :

  168. send-as: uue
  169.  
  170. If for some reason, the 6th part of the transmission failed, you could
  171. send another message to 'f-prot-update@complex.is' containing the following
  172. in the body:

  174. send-as: uue
  175. send-part: 6
  176.  
  177. To change the block size to about 20 Kilobytes, you could send a message
  178. to 'f-prot-update@complex.is' containing the following in the body:

  180. send-as: uue
  181. send-size: 20
  182.  
  183. And if the 4th part of that transmission is lost, you could send the
  184. following message to 'f-prot-update@complex.is':
  185.  
  186. send-as: uue
  187. send-size: 20
  188. send-part: 4

  190. subscribe notice:  Allows people to subscribe to a new version notice.
  191. Subscribers will then receive announcement in E-mail when new versions of
  192. F-PROT are available.
  193.  
  194. unsubscribe notice:  Removes people from the new version notice list.
  195.  
  196. check notice:  Sends back confirmation whether an address is subscribed or
  197. not.
