  48. A menu program is provided which will introduce the programs and
  49. help you install them by running each program's setup or install
  50. software. To run this, choose Run from the File menu in the 
  51. Windows Program Manager and enter:

  53.        d:\PCDIRECT
  54.  
  55. where d: is the letter of your CD-ROM drive. To use the menu 
  56. program, your PC should have Windows 3.1, 4Mb or more RAM and a
  57. VGA or higher resolution screen.

  59. Using the CD directly
  60. =====================
  61. You can also access the CD directly using the Windows File Manager,
  62. Program Manager and other software if you do not want to use the
  63. menu program. For example, you can start one of the programs on the
  64. CD by choosing Run from the Program Manager File menu, clicking the
  65. Browse button and then finding the relevant program file. For example,
  66. you can install Bills Plus by starting the program file SETUP.EXE 
  67. in the \BILLSPLS directory on the CD.

  101. Directory guide
  102. ---------------
  103. The following notes provide a quick guide to the directories on
  104. the CD...
  105.  
  106. Root directory (\)
  107.    This contains the CD-ROM Menu front-end program and
  108.    sections of the Serif Monster DTP CD. 
  109.  
  110.    For the CD-ROM Menu, run the program file PCDIRECT.EXE.
  111.  
  112.    For the Serif software, run the program file INSTALL.EXE
  113.    to setup the software.
  114.  
  115. \BROWSER
  116. \CLIPART
  117. \DISK
  118. \DPINTRO
  119. \FONTS
  120. \PPINTRO
  121.    These sub-directories contain the components of the
  122.    Serif Monster DTP CD. Start INSTALL.EXE in the root
  123.    directory of the CD-ROM (\) to install the Serif
  124.    software.

  126. \ACROBAT
  127.    The Adobe Acrobat reader for Windows setup program. Run
  128.    the file ACROREAD.EXE from within Windows to install the
  129.    software.
  130.  
  131. \BILLSPLS
  132.     The evaluation version of Bills Plus. Run the program 
  133.     file SETUP.EXE from within Windows to install this.
  134.  
  135. \INTERNET
  136.     This directory contains sub-directories for each of the
  137.     free and shareware Internet programs. To use these, copy
  138.     the relevant files to a suitable directory on your hard
  139.     disk and follow the documentation with each program for
  140.     setting it up.
  141.  
  142. \MININS
  143.    The CD-ROM Menu's mini installer program and other 
  144.    components of the CD-ROM Menu front-end.
  145.  
  146. \PDF
  147.    PC DIRECT's Internet articles in 'PDF' or 'Portable 
  148.    Document Format' files, ready for use with the Adobe
  149.    Acrobat reader. Once Acrobat is installed, you can open
  150.    these files directly from the CD-ROM. For faster access,
  151.    copy the files (for example, with the Windows File Manager)
  152.    to a suitable directory on your hard disk.

  154. \ROTT
  155.    The Rise of the Triad program, unpacked.
  156.  
  157. \ROTT\INSTALL
  158.    The Rise of the Triad program with its DOS-based install
  159.    program. To install the software, exit from Windows to the
  160.    DOS prompt, change to your CD-ROM drive (e.g. enter D: if
  161.    D: is the letter of your CD drive), enter CD \ROTT\INSTALL
  162.    and then enter the command INSTALL.
  163.  
  164. \SCRNSAVE
  165.    The Balloon Girl screensaver. To install this, copy the
  166.    screensaver file BALLGIRL.SCR to your main WINDOWS 
  167.    directory. You can then select and setup the Balloon
  168.    Girl screensaver from the Windows Control Panel in the
  169.    normal way.

  171. \TIMEWISE
  172.    The Timewise 30-day trial program. Run the program file 
  173.    SETUP.EXE from within Windows to install this.
  174.  
  175. \WINCIM
  176.     The WinCIM software. Run the program file SETUP.EXE 
  177.     from within Windows to install this.

  179. \WINNET
  180.     The WinNET software. Run the program file SETUP.EXE
  181.     from within Windows to install this.

  183. \WINNET\TOOLS
  184.     The WinNet Tools software. Run the program file 
  185.     SETUP.EXE from within Windows to install this (you
  186.     should have installed WinNET beforehand).

  188. Notes about the CD-ROM menu program
  189. ===================================
  190.  
  191. Memory limitations
  192. ------------------
  193. If your PC has limited memory, you should avoid running other
  194. programs while you use the CD-ROM Menu program. If necessary,
  195. start programs directly using the filenames given above. Note
  196. that it is a good idea in any case to close other applications
  197. before running install and setup programs on your system.

  199. Display setup
  200. -------------
  201. The menu program looks best if your PC is setup to display 
  202. 256 or more colours. Most PCs can do this provided the 
  203. relevant driver is selected in the Windows SETUP program. See
  204. the welcome message in the CD-ROM Menu program for more 
  205. information.

  207. TOOLHELP.DLL
  208. ------------
  209. The CD-ROM Menu program uses a library file called TOOLHELP.DLL
  210. that is supplied with Windows 3.1. If this file has been deleted
  211. from your main WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, the CD-ROM program will
  212. not run. A copy of the file is provided in a directory called
  213. MININS on the CD. You can restore this to your WINDOWS\SYSTEM
  214. directory with the Windows File Manager or from DOS with
  215. a command such as:

  217.     COPY d:\MININS\TOOLHELP.DLL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
  218.  
  219. where 'C:' is the drive where WINDOWS is installed and d: is
  220. your CD drive. TOOLHELP.DLL is used by many Windows programs
  221. and should really be present in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
