  10. =======
  11. This plain-text document provides advice on using the programs on
  12. this CD directly. This CD also has a front-end program, started by 
  13. running PCDIRECT.EXE from within Windows, which will introduce 
  14. the programs in more depth and help you to try them out or install
  15. them.

  17. Programs on the CD
  18. ------------------
  19.  
  20. The Universal Word
  21.   A personal copy of The Universal Word for Windows, a capable
  22.   and well-established multi-lingual word processor. This 
  23.   version is fully working and can be upgraded to the full
  24.   package for a special price.
  25.  
  26. Astound 2.0 30 day trial
  27.   Gold Disk Astound 2.0 goes far beyond the traditional
  28.   slideshow presentation program by letting you easily 
  29.   include multimedia features such as animation, sound and
  30.   digital video. A 30 day trial version of this versatile 
  31.   package is provided on this CD.
  32.  
  33. LinguaMatch
  34.   A graphical phrasebook in eight languages... just point and
  35.   click with the mouse to move from bird's eye view to town 
  36.   to hotel and so forth, clicking on anything that takes your
  37.   fancy for a quick translation. A fully working version of
  38.   this DOS-based program is included on this CD which you can
  39.   register for just £5.99 or upgrade to the latest enhanced
  40.   Windows version.
  41.  
  42. Programmer's File Editor
  43.   A capable full-feature Windows-based text editor. Written by
  44.   Alan Phillips at the Lancaster University Computer Centre, 
  45.   this freeware program is aimed at programmers but is useful
  46.   as a general-purpose editor. Both 16-bit Windows and 32-bit
  47.   Windows NT versions are included.

  49. NeverEnding Disk
  50.   Sytron's hierarchical storage management utility aims to 
  51.   banish disk full errors by automatically compressing and 
  52.   then copying off little used files from your PC's hard
  53.   disk. The files still appear to be on your system and are
  54.   recalled automatically when required! A limited but
  55.   operational demonstration of this sophisticated utility
  56.   is provided on this CD.
  57.  
  58. Sentfactor Photo-CD Access demo
  59.   Sentfactor's Photo-CD Access software provides an easy way
  60.   to get at images stored on Photo-CDs, selecting the right
  61.   resolution, rotating or flipping as necessary and saving 
  62.   the images off in TIFF or BMP format. The program also 
  63.   includes a simple to operate slideshow facility. A limited
  64.   demonstration version of the software is included on this
  65.   CD along which works with 20 sample images provided.

  67. Outer Ridge
  68.   This DOS-based shareware game from John McCarthy combines the
  69.   latest high-speed 3D rendered animation techniques with the
  70.   old arcade classic Asteroids. A polished and very playable
  71.   game.

  73. WinCIM v1.4 plus Compuserve membership offer
  74.   Our regular Compuserve offer includes the latest version 1.4
  75.   of WinCIM, Compuserve's Windows-based front-end software to
  76.   access the huge Compuserve online information service plus a
  77.   sign-up offer for new members.

  79. Times Flies screensaver
  80.   Another new screensaver from PC DIRECT to grace your Windows
  81.   desktop. Time Flies starts with what appears to be a random
  82.   assortment of insects. The surprise is that they will 
  83.   perform a clock face dance at preset intervals, making Time
  84.   Flies one of the silliest desktop clocks available for Windows!

  86. Running the CD-ROM Menu program
  87. -------------------------------
  88. A menu program is provided which will introduce the programs and
  89. help you install them by running each program's setup or install
  90. software. To run this, choose Run from the File menu in the 
  91. Windows Program Manager and enter:

  93.        d:\PCDIRECT
  94.  
  95. where d: is the letter of your CD-ROM drive.
  96.  
  97. To use the menu program, your PC should have Windows 3.1, 4Mb or
  98. more RAM and a VGA or higher resolution screen. Note that it is
  99. a good idea to close other applications when running this program
  100. or other install and setup programs... this prevents possible
  101. conflicts between install and setup programs that need to update
  102. or modify files that may be in use by other applications and helps
  103. to ensure you have sufficient free memory.
  104.  
  105. Using the CD directly
  106. =====================
  107. You can also access the CD directly using the Windows File Manager,
  108. Program Manager and other software if you do not want to use the
  109. menu program. For example, you can start one of the programs on the
  110. CD by choosing Run from the Program Manager File menu, clicking the
  111. Browse button and then finding the relevant program file. For example,
  112. you can install the Astound 30 day trial version by starting the
  113. program file SETUP.EXE in the \ASTOUND directory on the CD.

  115. The programs can be installed and or run as follows...
  116.  
  117.     The Universal Word
  118.       The Universal Word has a DOS-based install program.
  119.       To start this, run SETUP.EXE in the d:\UWORD\INSTALL
  120.       directory and follow the prompts. After installation,
  121.       restart Windows (to ensure that the program's fonts
  122.       have been installed) and create an icon for the
  123.       program (WUW_PERS.EXE) in the usual way. 
  124.       
  125.     Astound
  126.       Run SETUP.EXE in the d:\ASTOUND directory.

  128.     Video for Windows 1.1e
  129.       If required for Astound, run SETUP.EXE in the
  130.       d:\VFW_11E directory
  131.  
  132.     Sentfactor Photo-CD Access demo
  133.       Run SETUP.EXE in the d:\SENTFACT directory.
  134.       The program can also be run directly from the CD;
  135.       run PCD_DEMO.EXE in the \SENTFACT\RUN directory.

  137.     Programmer's File Editor
  138.       Copy the files from the relevant directory on the
  139.       CD to a suitable directory on your hard disk:
  140.       d:\PFE for the 16-bit Windows version, d:\PFE\
  141.       PFE32I for the 32-bit Intel version and d:\PFE\
  142.       PFE32P for the 32-bit PowerPC version.
  143.  
  144.       Programmer's File Editor can also be run 
  145.       straight from the CD. Run the file PFE.EXE 
  146.       in the appropriate directory.    
  147.  
  148.        WinCIM
  149.       Run SETUP.EXE in the d:\WINCIM directory
  150.  
  151.        NeverEnding Disk
  152.       Run SETUP.EXE from the d:\NENDDISK directory.
  153.       Important... read the text file README.TXT 
  154.       and/or the documentation provided in the CD
  155.       ROM Menu for advice before installing this
  156.       program.
  157.  
  158.        LinguaMatch
  159.       Copy the files in the d:\LINGUA directory
  160.       on the CD to a suitable directory on your
  161.       hard disk. You can also make an install
  162.       floppy for the program and use its own 
  163.       install program if preferred. To do this...
  164.  
  165.       Format a new 1.4Mb or 1.2Mb floppy
  166.  
  167.       Copy the files in the d:\LINGUA\INSTALL
  168.       directory onto the floppy.
  169.  
  170.       Change to the floppy (e.g. enter A: or B:)
  171.  
  172.       Enter the command INSTALL
  173.  
  174.       LinguaMatch can be run from the CD although
  175.       it will not save default settings. Change
  176.       to the d:\LINGUA directory and enter the
  177.       command LINGUA.
  178.  
  179.     Screensaver
  180.       Copy the file FLIES.SCR from the directory
  181.       d:\SCRNSAVE to your main WINDOWS directory
  182.  
  183. ... where, again, d: represents the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.

  216. Notes about the CD-ROM menu program
  217. ===================================
  218.  
  219. Memory limitations
  220. ------------------
  221. If your PC has limited memory, you should avoid running other
  222. programs while you use the CD-ROM Menu program. If necessary,
  223. start programs directly using the filenames given above. Note
  224. that it is a good idea in any case to close other applications
  225. before running install and setup programs on your system.
  226.  
  227. Display setup
  228. -------------
  229. The menu program looks best if your PC is setup to display 
  230. 256 or more colours. Most PCs can do this provided the 
  231. relevant driver is selected in the Windows SETUP program. See
  232. the welcome message in the CD-ROM Menu program for more 
  233. information.

  235. TOOLHELP.DLL
  236. ------------
  237. The CD-ROM Menu program uses a library file called TOOLHELP.DLL
  238. that is supplied with Windows 3.1. If this file has been deleted
  239. from your main WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, the CD-ROM program will
  240. not run. A copy of the file is provided in a directory called
  241. MININS on the CD. You can restore this to your WINDOWS\SYSTEM
  242. directory with the Windows File Manager or from DOS with
  243. a command such as:

  245.     COPY d:\MININS\TOOLHELP.DLL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
  246.  
  247. where 'C:' is the drive where WINDOWS is installed and d: is
  248. your CD drive. TOOLHELP.DLL is used by many Windows programs
  249. and should really be present in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
