Welcome
=======
This plain-text document provides advice on using the programs on
this CD directly. This CD also has a front-end program, started by
running PCDIRECT.EXE from within Windows, which will introduce
the programs in more depth and help you to try them out or install
them.
Programs on the CD
------------------
The Universal Word
A personal copy of The Universal Word for Windows, a capable
and well-established multi-lingual word processor. This
version is fully working and can be upgraded to the full
package for a special price.
Astound 2.0 30 day trial
Gold Disk Astound 2.0 goes far beyond the traditional
slideshow presentation program by letting you easily
include multimedia features such as animation, sound and
digital video. A 30 day trial version of this versatile
package is provided on this CD.
LinguaMatch
A graphical phrasebook in eight languages... just point and
click with the mouse to move from bird's eye view to town
to hotel and so forth, clicking on anything that takes your
fancy for a quick translation. A fully working version of
this DOS-based program is included on this CD which you can
register for just £5.99 or upgrade to the latest enhanced
Windows version.
Programmer's File Editor
A capable full-feature Windows-based text editor. Written by
Alan Phillips at the Lancaster University Computer Centre,
this freeware program is aimed at programmers but is useful
as a general-purpose editor. Both 16-bit Windows and 32-bit
Windows NT versions are included.
NeverEnding Disk
Sytron's hierarchical storage management utility aims to
banish disk full errors by automatically compressing and
then copying off little used files from your PC's hard
disk. The files still appear to be on your system and are
recalled automatically when required! A limited but
operational demonstration of this sophisticated utility
is provided on this CD.
Sentfactor Photo-CD Access demo
Sentfactor's Photo-CD Access software provides an easy way
to get at images stored on Photo-CDs, selecting the right
resolution, rotating or flipping as necessary and saving
the images off in TIFF or BMP format. The program also
includes a simple to operate slideshow facility. A limited
demonstration version of the software is included on this
CD along which works with 20 sample images provided.
Outer Ridge
This DOS-based shareware game from John McCarthy combines the
latest high-speed 3D rendered animation techniques with the
old arcade classic Asteroids. A polished and very playable
game.
WinCIM v1.4 plus Compuserve membership offer
Our regular Compuserve offer includes the latest version 1.4
of WinCIM, Compuserve's Windows-based front-end software to
access the huge Compuserve online information service plus a
sign-up offer for new members.
Times Flies screensaver
Another new screensaver from PC DIRECT to grace your Windows
desktop. Time Flies starts with what appears to be a random
assortment of insects. The surprise is that they will
perform a clock face dance at preset intervals, making Time
Flies one of the silliest desktop clocks available for Windows!
Running the CD-ROM Menu program
-------------------------------
A menu program is provided which will introduce the programs and
help you install them by running each program's setup or install
software. To run this, choose Run from the File menu in the
Windows Program Manager and enter:
d:\PCDIRECT
where d: is the letter of your CD-ROM drive.
To use the menu program, your PC should have Windows 3.1, 4Mb or
more RAM and a VGA or higher resolution screen. Note that it is
a good idea to close other applications when running this program
or other install and setup programs... this prevents possible
conflicts between install and setup programs that need to update
or modify files that may be in use by other applications and helps
to ensure you have sufficient free memory.
Using the CD directly
=====================
You can also access the CD directly using the Windows File Manager,
Program Manager and other software if you do not want to use the
menu program. For example, you can start one of the programs on the
CD by choosing Run from the Program Manager File menu, clicking the
Browse button and then finding the relevant program file. For example,
you can install the Astound 30 day trial version by starting the
program file SETUP.EXE in the \ASTOUND directory on the CD.
The programs can be installed and or run as follows...
The Universal Word
The Universal Word has a DOS-based install program.
To start this, run SETUP.EXE in the d:\UWORD\INSTALL
directory and follow the prompts. After installation,
restart Windows (to ensure that the program's fonts
have been installed) and create an icon for the
program (WUW_PERS.EXE) in the usual way.
Astound
Run SETUP.EXE in the d:\ASTOUND directory.
Video for Windows 1.1e
If required for Astound, run SETUP.EXE in the
d:\VFW_11E directory
Sentfactor Photo-CD Access demo
Run SETUP.EXE in the d:\SENTFACT directory.
The program can also be run directly from the CD;
run PCD_DEMO.EXE in the \SENTFACT\RUN directory.
Programmer's File Editor
Copy the files from the relevant directory on the
CD to a suitable directory on your hard disk:
d:\PFE for the 16-bit Windows version, d:\PFE\
PFE32I for the 32-bit Intel version and d:\PFE\
PFE32P for the 32-bit PowerPC version.
Programmer's File Editor can also be run
straight from the CD. Run the file PFE.EXE
in the appropriate directory.
WinCIM
Run SETUP.EXE in the d:\WINCIM directory
NeverEnding Disk
Run SETUP.EXE from the d:\NENDDISK directory.
Important... read the text file README.TXT
and/or the documentation provided in the CD
ROM Menu for advice before installing this
program.
LinguaMatch
Copy the files in the d:\LINGUA directory
on the CD to a suitable directory on your
hard disk. You can also make an install
floppy for the program and use its own
install program if preferred. To do this...
Format a new 1.4Mb or 1.2Mb floppy
Copy the files in the d:\LINGUA\INSTALL
directory onto the floppy.
Change to the floppy (e.g. enter A: or B:)
Enter the command INSTALL
LinguaMatch can be run from the CD although
it will not save default settings. Change
to the d:\LINGUA directory and enter the
command LINGUA.
Screensaver
Copy the file FLIES.SCR from the directory
d:\SCRNSAVE to your main WINDOWS directory
... where, again, d: represents the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.

Notes about the CD-ROM menu program
===================================
Memory limitations
------------------
If your PC has limited memory, you should avoid running other
programs while you use the CD-ROM Menu program. If necessary,
start programs directly using the filenames given above. Note
that it is a good idea in any case to close other applications
before running install and setup programs on your system.
Display setup
-------------
The menu program looks best if your PC is setup to display
256 or more colours. Most PCs can do this provided the
relevant driver is selected in the Windows SETUP program. See
the welcome message in the CD-ROM Menu program for more
information.
TOOLHELP.DLL
------------
The CD-ROM Menu program uses a library file called TOOLHELP.DLL
that is supplied with Windows 3.1. If this file has been deleted
from your main WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, the CD-ROM program will
not run. A copy of the file is provided in a directory called
MININS on the CD. You can restore this to your WINDOWS\SYSTEM
directory with the Windows File Manager or from DOS with
a command such as:
COPY d:\MININS\TOOLHELP.DLL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
where 'C:' is the drive where WINDOWS is installed and d: is
your CD drive. TOOLHELP.DLL is used by many Windows programs
and should really be present in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
