ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. PowerAlert Remote Shutdown Client ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Overview
PowerAlert Remote Shutdown Client (RSC) is a companion application to the
PowerAlert software group. The use of this application allows a system not
directly communicating with the Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS), to shutdown
its operating system in the event of a power problem. Here's how it works.
Within a group of networked systems, one system would have the PowerAlert
server installed (this system communicates with the UPS directly through a
serial COM port) while the others would have the RSC installed. The system with
the PowerAlert server will be designated the Broadcast Server and the RSC's are
then tuned into the Broadcast Server. When the Remote Shutdown Message is
received from the Broadcast Server, the RSC can be configured to begin a
shutdown timer. When the timer reaches zero, the RSC system will perform a
safe shutdown of its operating system.
The Remote Shutdown Client can be applied when multiple systems need to be
shutdown. Such is the case when
1. The number of systems requiring UPS status information to perform a safe
shutdown exceeds the number of communications ports on the UPS.
2. The network clients need to be shutdown before the application server is
shutdown. All systems should have UPS power.
This utility can be operate in one of two modes:
Local Shutdown Enabled this puts the utility on alert to act on the Remote
Shutdown Message received from the Broadcast Server.
Monitor Only this puts the utility on standby and it will only show
that the server is shutting down and not shutdown the
local machine.
In the event the shutdown timer starts, the user of an RSC system can pause
and resume the shutdown timer, though caution should be exercised when using
this feature.
Note: All systems must be using the TCP/IP protocol in order for the Remote
Shutdown Client to communicate with its Broadcast Server.
Internationalization
The PowerAlert Plus application consists of several components: the PowerAlert
Plus "client" GUI, the server, a Remote Shutdown Client, and a Server Setup
application. All components except the server allow the user to specify the
language to be used for labeling the menus, buttons, and controls on all of
the screens and message boxes. Currently, the applications support the
following languages: English, French, German, and Spanish. In most cases,
other languages can be easily added without having to reinstall the original
or updated software. The applications use "language" files (available from
Tripp Manufacturing) which can be installed by simply replacing the previous
copies with the new language file(s).
For information on the use of this application, see any of the following

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Main Screen ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Main Screen of the PowerAlert Plus Shutdown Client allows the user or
administrator to control the graphical user interface (GUI), setup the utility,
control the shutdown timer for the local operating system, and exit from this
window. The display areas and screen controls are detailed below.
Display Areas
UPS Communications Communications status with the Broadcast Server and
its UPS as Connected or Disconnected. Disconnected
could mean that the cable is loose, faulty or the COM
port is not configured properly.
UPS On Battery State of the Broadcast Server UPS as Yes/"On Battery"
or No/"Not On Battery". It is used symbolically here
to indicate whether or not the Remote Shutdown
Message has been received from the Broadcast Server.
If "Yes", the local system shutdown timer will start
if shutdown is enabled during the Remote Shutdown
Client Setup.
Battery Capacity If the Broadcast Server UPS is operating off battery
power, this field reports the percentage of battery
capacity remaining.
Time Until Server Shutdown Time remaining until the Broadcast Server begins
its operating system shutdown process. Updated every
5 seconds in HH:MM:SS format. Reports "NA" if the
Remote Shutdown Message has not been received from
the Broad at Server.
Time Until Local Shutdown Time remaining until the local RSC machine begins
its operating system shutdown process. Updated
real-time in HH:MM:SS format. Reports "NA" if the
Remote Shutdown Message has not been received or
"Disabled" if local shutdown is not enabled during
Setup.
Server Name of the Broadcast Server that the Remote Shutdown
Client is "tuned" into.
Status Current status of the connection between the Remote
Shutdown Client and the Server - similar to the UPS
Communications.
Controls
Setup Calls the Setup Screen allowing the user to configure
the mode of operation and Broadcast Server to tune
into for the Remote Shutdown Message.
Hide Removes the window from the desktop. However,
clicking on the battery icon in the system tray
(Windows systems only) will redisplay the screen.
Exit Closes the REMOTE SHUTDOWN CLIENT application. Local
system shutdown will not occur if the application is
closed.
About Displays the About screen.
Help Calls this help file's content viewer.
Pause Shutdown / Resume Shutdown This button will change text based on the
current state of the operating system shutdown timer.
Clicking on Pause Shutdown will halt the countdown
process; Resume Shutdown, resume the countdown timer
with the time last displayed in the Time Until Local
Shutdown area.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Setup Screen ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Setup Screen allows the user or administrator to configure the Remote
Shutdown Client. Here the RSC is configured to tune into a specific Broadcast
Server for a Remote Shutdown Message among other parameters. See the table
below for details about each field.
Important: Be sure to enable the Remote Shutdown Message at the Broadcast
Server for at least one event such as "UPS On Battery". The Remote Shutdown
Client will NOT receive shutdown notification to begin its own local shutdown
timer if the event causing the Broadcast Server to start shutting down is NOT
specified to send a Remote Shutdown Message. For more information on
configuring the Broadcast Server, please read the Event Manager topic in the
PowerAlert Plus Client help file.
Input Areas
Language Specifies the language with which the application
should display information and screen text.
Server Name Specifies the IP address or machine name running the
PowerAlert Server with which to connect (i.e. the
Broadcast Server).
Local Shutdown Delay Specifies the amount of time the Remote Shutdown
Client should wait after receiving the Remote
Shutdown Message before beginning its operating
system shutdown.
Local Shutdown Enabled Specifies that the Remote Shutdown Client is to start
a shutdown timer with the time specified in the Local
Shutdown Delay area when signaled by the Broadcast
Server.
Monitor Only Allows the Remote Shutdown Client to report status on
the progress of the connected serverТs shutdown.
Local shutdown will NOT be performed.
Controls
OK Sets and saves the current settings. Closes the
screen.
Cancel Ignores all settings and closes the screen.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Glossary - Terminology ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Battery Capacity
The reported battery capacity of the UPS powering the PowerAlert Plus server.
Broadcast Server
Term used to describe a PowerAlert Server configured to send a Remote Shutdown
Message when at least one event occurs such as UPS On Battery. Remote Shutdown
Clients "tuned" into the Broadcast Server will then perform an operating system
shutdown.
Connected
As applied by the Status display on the main screen Ц means the Broadcast
Server is communicating properly with the Remote Shutdown Client. As applied
by the UPS Communications display on the main screen Ц means the UPS is
communicating properly with the Broadcast Server.
Local Shutdown Delay
The amount of time the RSC client will wait before beginning the local system
shutdown. The Local Shutdown timer will be initialized to this delay when the
Remote Shutdown Message is received from the Broadcast Server.
Local Shutdown Enabled
Puts the Remote Shutdown Client into shutdown mode. This means that the Remote
Shutdown Client will start a local operating system shutdown timer when a
Remote Shutdown Message is received. Important If a shutdown signal is not
received, even if the server starts its operating system shutdown timer, the
local machine (Remote Shutdown Client) will NOT start a shutdown timer.
Monitor Only
Puts the client into monitor mode. This means that the Remote Shutdown Client
will report the battery capacity, server shutdown time remaining, battery
state, and UPS communications state from the server, but will not perform a
local shutdown.
Remote Shutdown Message
Signal used to inform systems running the Remote Shutdown Client to begin their
operating system shutdown timers.
Remote Shutdown Client
Term used to describe the PowerAlert application for multiple system shutdown.
Also can be used to describe a system running the Remote Shutdown Client
application.
Server Name
Name or IP address of the machine the Remote Shutdown Client is tuned into
(i.e. the Broadcast Server). This machine must be powered by the UPS as well as
run the PowerAlert Plus server.
Time Until Local Shutdown
The remaining time on the local shutdown timer before it begins the local
operating system shutdown.
Time Until Server Shutdown
The remaining time on the Broadcast ServerТs shutdown timer before it begins
its operating system shutdown.
UPS Communications
The communications state of the PowerAlert PlusТs server with its UPS.
UPS On Battery
Used symbolically here to indicate whether or not a Remote Shutdown message has
been received from the Broadcast Server. The values can be No, UPS Not on
Battery or Yes meaning that the Remote Shutdown Message has been received.
