any problems identified in the product and their solutions.
CONTENTS
--------
This README file includes the following information:
1.0 Installation of the PowerAlert Plus for OS/2 Product
2.0 Installation Notes
3.0 Sharing PowerAlert Plus Directories
4.0 New Features of the PowerAlert Plus for OS/2 Product
5.0 Technical Support
1.0 Installation of the OS/2 Product
--------------------------------
To install PowerAlert Plus for OS/2, open an OS/2 command prompt
window (either FullScreen or Windowed) from the Command Prompts
folder, then perform the following:
* Switch to the drive and directory containing the OS/2 installation
program on the Tripp Lite PowerAlert Plus CDROM for example:
X:\OS2. (where X: is your CDROM drive)
* Then run the PowerAlert Plus installation software by typing
INSTALL at the X:\OS2 prompt.
* If you attempt to access the installation program from an
alternate directory for example:
C:\> X:\OS2\INSTALL
the PowerAlert Plus installation will not work. The installation
program needs to be run from the actual OS2 directory on the
CDROM.
* Alternately, you may use the Workplace Shell to start the
installation program. To do this, use the drives folder and
locate the OS2 directory on the Tripp Lite PowerAlert Plus
CDROM using the CDROM drive object. Then double click on
the INSTALL.EXE program to begin the installation of the
PowerAlert Plus product.
2.0 Installation Notes
------------------
* OS/2 systems no longer require a network interface card (NIC) to run the
OS/2 PowerAlert Plus product. Therefore, you no longer need to have IBM
Lan Requester or IBM Lan Server installed to run any of the PowerAlert Plus
products and utilities. However, networking is required for the Remote
Shutdown Client and for using Network Alert Logging.
* The PowerAlert Plus OS/2 software does require TCPIP to be installed and
properly configured. TCPIP can be installed either by installing the
Internet Connection package that comes on the OS/2 Warp Bonuspak that
ships with OS/2 Warp Version 3 or by using the TCPIP software that comes
shipped with OS/2 Warp Version 4 or OS/2 Warp Connect.
Without proper TCPIP support installed, the OS/2 Workplace Shell
will display an error when attempting to run a PowerAlert Plus
executable.
The error will look like the following:
Cannot start
C:\PAPLUS\SERVER\PASERVER.EXE
Make sure the path for the program is correct and the file is
an OS/2 or DOS program. There might not be enough memory
available to run the program or the file may be locked by
another process. Do you wish to modify the properties for
the object, PowerAlert Plus Server?
This error is caused by the fact that PowerAlert Plus Server
requires the use of TCPIP dynamic link libraries.
* Network Alert Logging functionality will not work when specifying
a TCPIP address as the Server name in the PowerAlert Plus Client.
The PowerAlert Plus Client will automatically display a message box
indicating this information when the user enters a TCPIP address.
To properly use the Network Alert Logging functionality, the user
must use the computer name specified in the HOSTS file located in
the MPTN\ETC directory. To configure TCPIP in OS/2, run the
program TCPCFG.EXE in the TCPIP\BIN directory.
3.0 Sharing PowerAlert Plus Directories
-----------------------------------
* In previous releases of the PowerAlert Plus OS/2 software, you
were prompted during the installation to create the PowerAlert
Plus Share Names. The Installation program automatically
created and executed an OS/2 command file named SHARE.CMD which
created the following shares:
net share PAPLUS=X:\PAPLUS
net share PAPLUSNA=X:\PAPLUS\NETALERT
The Share Names are used if you have IBM Lan Requester installed
and would like to take advantage of a shared directory to store
PowerAlert Plus Network Alert Data. The current release of
the Installation program no longer creates this file. Instead,
the PowerAlert Plus Server automatically attempts to create
the shares when it is started. You may want to ensure that
that Lan Requester is started and that you are logged on prior
to launching the PowerAlert Plus Server to ensure that the
directories are shared, and that you are able to take advantage
of this functionality.
4.0 New Features of the PowerAlert Plus for OS/2 Product
----------------------------------------------------
* There are several new features that have been added to the
PowerAlert Plus OS/2 product.
- The PowerAlert Plus OS/2 Server is now a 32 bit OS/2 Presentation
Manager (PM) program. The program uses the Stern & Morrow Software
Process Information Tool Dynamic Link Library (PAPITAPI.DLL) to
obtain information about processes running on the machine. When a
UPS shutdown occurs, a listing of all the running processes at the
time of the shutdown is logged and is displayed by the PowerAlert
Plus Server the next time it is started. This allows administrators
to track UPS Shutdowns/Server Outtages and know for sure what was
running at the time of the UPS Shutdown, so that they may restart
programs if necessary.
