  18. This file explains how trial versions of 4OS2 work, and
  19. how you can give a purchased copy of 4OS2 to a friend to
  20. use as a trial version.

  26. Trial Version Basics
  27. --------------------

  29.    We distribute trial or "shareware" versions of our software to allow
  30.    you to "try before you buy".  Most users obtain trial versions by
  31.    downloading them.  You might also have one if a friend gave you a copy
  32.    of their software -- as long as they don't give you their serial number
  33.    and registration key (which would be illegal), the software they gave
  34.    you will operate as a trial version.
  35.    
  36.    Trial versions are covered under the trial version license in the
  37.    LICENSE.TXT file, which you should read before using your software.
  38.    
  39.    We explain here how trial versions work because we believe that full
  40.    disclosure of what you can expect from your software is the best policy
  41.    for both you and us.  Our timing mechanism is designed to give you a
  42.    fair opportunity to try our software, order it, and receive it without
  43.    significant restrictions on use.  It's also designed to make sure that
  44.    use of the software becomes restricted if you significantly exceed the
  45.    normal evaluation period.

  47.    Trial versions of our products are fully functional evaluation copies
  48.    which are not "crippled" or feature-limited in any way except for the
  49.    trial timing mechanism described here.

  52. Trial Version Timing
  53. --------------------

  55.    When you first install a trial version on your computer, it begins to
  56.    count the number of days on which you use it.  Only actual days of use
  57.    are counted -- if you go away for a few days, or are busy with other
  58.    things and don't work with the product for a bit, the intervening days
  59.    are not counted.
  60.    
  61.    You are given a 21-day evaluation period (remember that's 21 days of
  62.    actual use -- three weeks if you use the product every day, or a little
  63.    more than four 5-day work weeks of uninterrupted use).  The number of
  64.    days remaining in the evaluation period is displayed when you start
  65.    the program, and can be redisplayed at any time with the VER /R
  66.    command.  At startup the software pauses briefly to allow you to read
  67.    the information; this pause can be interrupted with a keystroke if
  68.    you wish.  During the last 7 days of the evaluation period a short
  69.    two-tone beep draws your attention to the signon message.
  70.    
  71.    Once you have reached 21 days of use the evaluation period expires and
  72.    you are given a grace period of 14 additional days (of actual use) to
  73.    make sure you have time to receive your order of a purchased copy.
  74.    During this period you are advised at signon that usage will be
  75.    restricted once the grace period expires, and of the number of days
  76.    remaining (use VER /R to redisplay the number of days remaining).
  77.    Also, the startup delay for reading the signon message becomes slightly
  78.    longer, the first part of the delay is no longer interruptible with a
  79.    keystroke (to continue, just wait a couple of seconds, then press a
  80.    key), and a sequence of beeps is used to draw your attention to the
  81.    reminder messages.

  83.    After expiration of the grace period your use of the software is
  84.    restricted by limiting the number of commands you can enter before
  85.    the program exits automatically and must be restarted.  You are advised
  86.    of the usage restriction each time you start the program.  There is
  87.    also a significant delay each time the program starts, and a
  88.    substantial portion of that delay is not interruptible with a
  89.    keystroke.

  91.    Once use is restricted the software will also sound a noticeably longer
  92.    sequence of beeps each time it is started.

  94.    If you have ordered a copy of our software directly from us, at or
  95.    before the end of the evaluation period, and find that the grace period
  96.    expires and use becomes restricted before your order arrives, please
  97.    contact us for assistance.

  100. Installing the Purchased Version After a Trial
  101. ----------------------------------------------

  103.    When you install a purchased copy of 4OS2, you may
  104.    choose to:
  105.    
  106.       - Install it in a new directory, and then delete the trial version
  107.         directory;
  108.         
  109.       - Install the purchased version "over" (in the same directory as)
  110.         the trial version;
  111.         
  112.       - Install only the "branding" program from the purchased version
  113.         (when this option is offered by the installation software), and
  114.         use it to "brand" the trial version with your name and serial
  115.         number, converting it to a purchased copy.
  116.    
  117.    In each case, once you install the purchased copy and "brand" it with
  118.    your name and serial number, all trial messages and delays should
  119.    stop.  (If 4OS2 was running during installation of the
  120.    purchased version you must exit and restart for the newly installed
  121.    name and serial number to take full effect).

  124. Giving Copies to Others to Try
  125. ------------------------------

  127.    We know many of our customers may want to give a copy of one of our
  128.    products to a friend or colleague to try.
  129.    
  130.    We encourage you to share your purchased copy of our software with
  131.    individuals you know personally.  The only restriction is that you
  132.    must use the simple approach described here to avoid violating your
  133.    license agreement or disclosing the registration key (for which you
  134.    paid!) to others.

  136.    To give a copy of your software to someone else for evaluation
  137.    purposes, simply let them borrow or make a copy of your diskette, CD
  138.    (or the desired subirectory from the CD), or downloaded electronic
  139.    purchase.  When your friend or colleague installs the software you've
  140.    passed along to them in this way, without your serial number and
  141.    validation key, the program will automatically become a trial version
  142.    using the system described earlier in this file.  The recipient may
  143.    then decide whether to purchase the software under our normal trial
  144.    version policies.

  146.    Please note that under our license and trial version policies there
  147.    are also some things you may NOT do:
  148.    
  149.       - You may not give the other person your serial number or branding
  150.         codes, as these are private and represent the license you paid
  151.         for (giving them to others is a violation of your license
  152.         agreement).
  153.    
  154.       - You may not give the other person copies of installed files from
  155.         your hard disk, as these may have the serial number and code
  156.         embedded in them.
  157.    
  158.       - You may not place copies of your purchased copy of our software
  159.         on any Internet or other electronic distribution site, or in any
  160.         user group or other shareware library, or distribute them to the
  161.         public at large in any way.  This policy only allows you to
  162.         distribute copies to friends and colleagues you know personally
  163.         and privately.

  165.    You should also read LICENSE.TXT, and remind the recipient to read
  166.    that license and this file for complete licensing and trial version
  167.    information.

  169.    PLEASE NOTE:  This policy allows for only one level of distribution;
  170.    those who receive copies of your purchased software for trial use
  171.    under this policy may NOT further redistribute those copies to their
  172.    friends and colleagues.
