  2. !!!  This software is in beta and not completed.
  3. !!!  Only experienced users should try it.
  4. !!!  Use it at your own risk. It is expected to contain serious bugs.

  7. For a quick start, do the following:
  8.  
  9. - Make sure that your Java configuration is OK, by switching into the
  10.   directory containing SystemTest.class and systemtest.needs and executing:
  11.  
  12.     java SystemTest
  13.  
  14. - Make sure that the java_user environment variable is set to some
  15.   directory which can take the data this software will create. On
  16.   some systems, the HOME environment variable will be used.
  17.  
  18. - Locate the "knm" startup script for your OS and change the
  19.   environment variables to your needs.
  20.  
  21. - Run the startup script.
  22.  
  23. - Add at least one server of each kind you're interested in. Take the
  24.   appropriate server names from the configuration dialogs of your
  25.   mail and news software.
  26.  
  27. - If one of them is a newsserver, connect to the internet, highlight
  28.   that server and press the Groups button. In the popup window, press
  29.   the Get button to receive a list of available newsgroups.
  30.  
  31. - Activate all daemons for the servers you want to use your mail and
  32.   news software with.
  33.  
  34. - Configure your mail and news software to use localhost as the
  35.   newsserver, smtp server and pop3 server.
  36.  
  37. - If you use Janus/ZConnect Point software, have a look at netcall.cmd.
  38.   You might want to copy netcall.cmd and knm.jar to the software's
  39.   directory and configure your software to use netcall.cmd as an
  40.   external netcall module.

  42. - Have fun!

  44. - If you encounter any problems running knm or if you have other comments,

  46.   include to include at least the following information in your mailings:
  47.    * Operating System: Name, Vendor, and Version
  48.    * Java Runtime: Vendor and Version
  49.    * If Java Runtime version is lower than 1.2: Swing Class Library: Version
  50.   And please remember that Microsoft "Java" stuff is intentionally
  51.   incompatible and probably will create severe problems.
