  15.     Thank you for trying Back & Forth, the first professional-quality
  16.     shareware backup software available for OS/2 2.1!
  17.  
  18.     Back & Forth is a 32-bit backup utility for OS/2 2.1 that fully
  19.     supports HPFS, long filenames, and extended attributes as well as
  20.     processing files which are currently in use.
  21.  
  22.     All OS/2 logical devices are supported for backup, including but not
  23.     limited to Novell Netware, LAN Server, and NFS network drives,
  24.     floppy diskette drives, Bernoulli boxes, magneto optical devices,
  25.     and more.  In short, if you can do a 'DIR' command against your
  26.     device, you can back up to it.

  28.     For floppy diskettes, Back & Forth can use a special skewed-sector
  29.     format which, when combined with data compression, can backup 3-4MB
  30.     per minute on 1.44MB drives.  With 2.88MB drives, Back & Forth can
  31.     easily backup 6-8MB per minute!

  35.     System Requirements
  36.     -------------------
  37.     Back & Forth is designed to operate on machines running IBM OS/2
  38.     v2.1 or later.  Although we have not formally tested the software on
  39.     OS/2 v2.0, there should be no problems running on OS/2 2.0 so long
  40.     as the OS/2 2.0 service pack has been applied.  If you have problems
  41.     running Back & Forth on OS/2 v2.0, we will do what we can to
  42.     alleviate the situtation and we would like to hear from you.
  43.     However, since we do not have an OS/2 2.0 system in house, we can
  44.     make no promises.

  46.     Back & Forth does not require anything more than the minimum OS/2
  47.     system configuration, although it will run better (faster) when used
  48.     on an greater-than-minimum system.  This generally means the
  49.     following :

  51.         Intel 386/20 CPU
  52.         6MB memory
  53.         VGA display
  54.         One 360KB, 1.2MB, 720KB, 1.44MB, or 2.88MB floppy diskette
  55.         drive.

  58.     Installing Back & Forth
  59.     -----------------------
  60.     If you received this software in compressed (.ZIP, .ARJ, etc.) form,
  61.     simply run the INSTALL.EXE program from the directory where the
  62.     file was uncompressed.

  64.     If you received this software on diskette, simply open the Drive A
  65.     object (there is usually a shadow on your OS/2 desktop) and then
  66.     double-click on the install icon.

  68.     Installation is straight forward.  The default installation path
  69.     is on the system's OS/2 boot drive in a directory called "\BNF".
  70.     You may change this to your liking; we recommend that the software
  71.     be installed on your OS/2 system partition but it does not have to
  72.     be.

  74.     You can also have the installation program create a folder with the
  75.     Back & Forth user's guide, this read.me file, and the Back & Forth
  76.     program object on the desktop.  Additionally, the installation
  77.     program can create a shadow of the Back & Forth program on your
  78.     desktop.

  80.     By default, the LIBPATH, PATH, and HELP environment variables set
  81.     in CONFIG.SYS are updated to include the Back & Forth directory. You
  82.     may uncheck the option if you wish.  If the CONFIG.SYS file is
  83.     updated, the old CONFIG.SYS file will be renamed CONFIG.BNF.

  86.     Configuring Back & Forth
  87.     ------------------------
  88.     You may begin to use Back & Forth once the installation is
  89.     completed.  However, for optimal performance,  you may want to alter
  90.     the default settings in the preferences notebook.  For further
  91.     information about advanced configuration of Back & Forth, please see
  92.     the online user's guide.

  95.     Registering Back & Forth

  97.     We had a difficult time deciding how to distribute Back & Forth.
  98.     Initially, we talked about distributing a fully enabled copy as
  99.     shareware but after talking to other shareware authors we decided
  100.     that we would issue a limited demonstration version of the software
  101.     as shareware, with the ability to fully enable it over the
  102.     telephone. As a result, Back & Forth as shipped is limited to
  103.     backing up 2MB at a time.  No other limitations exist and even with
  104.     the 2MB limit, Back & Forth is still useful for day-to-day backups
  105.     of small files.

  107.     When you register your copy of Back & Forth via telephone, we will
  108.     give you a code that will fully enable your copy of Back & Forth for
  109.     your use until the permanently enabled version arrives on diskette.
  110.     We feel that this is a good comprimise, and we invite your comments.
