OSWPWC2P - WARPCENTER INCONSISTENT WITH THE WORKPLACE SHELL
11/14/96
=======================================================================
WarpCenter Inconsistent with the Workplace Shell
=======================================================================
Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures
--------------------------------------------------------------
DESCRIPTION
WarpCenter is inconsistent with the rest of the Workplace Shell (WPS).
For example, a right click on WarpCenter objects opens the application
or folder; it does not bring up the Properties notebook as on the WPS.
RESOLUTION
The WarpCenter is a hybrid of the Lotus SmartCenter and the OS/2 Warp
LaunchPad/Toolbar. As such, it is not expected to be totally consistent
with the WPS. In fact, the Toolbar is not consistent with the rest of
the WPS, because user feedback data indicated that the objects on the
Toolbar should be opened with a single click instead of a double click
like other objects on the Desktop.
WarpCenter combines two different paradigms:
* DropDown Menu Navigation, which is new to the graphical user
interface; this was only used in file managers before
* Object Toolbar behavior
These are discussed below.
Drop Down Menu Navigation
-------------------------
The WarpCenter provides drop down menu navigation of Desktop objects
through the OS/2 Warp button in the upper left corner of the Desktop.
This is in parallel to the object hierarchy of the objects on the
desktop; OS/2 System, Assistance Center, Connections, Programs, etc.
From this drop down menu you can explore the entire desktop or network,
if you want. The Left Mouse Button (MB1) takes you through the
hierarchy by opening a drop down menu view of the item you select. The
Right Mouse Button (MB2) opens a container object in icon view or
launches an executable.
Object Toolbar behavior
-----------------------
The object tray on the WarpCenter contains objects, and if you click MB2
on one of them, such as the Drives object, or the Command Prompts
folder, an object popup context menu appears, as if the object were on
the Desktop. If you click MB1, a drop down menu view of container
contents appears, or, if the object is an executable, it is launched,
as if it were on the Toolbar.
If you go down into the drop down menu and click MB2, container objects
open in icon view and executables launch, consistent with the dropdown
menus of the OS/2 Warp button.
