  10. DESCRIPTION
  11.  
  12. This document provides information for OS/2 Warp 3 MMPM/2 and its
  13. new features. If you are using an unsupported sound card, you
  14. must contact the manufacturer for support. Only the audio
  15. cards listed are supported under OS/2 Warp and MMPM/2.
  16.  
  17. RESOLUTION
  18.  
  19. Note: Make sure you have a backup of any file you intend to change.
  20.  
  21. Installation
  22.  
  23. MMPM/2 is fully integrated into Selective Install. If you want
  24. to install a feature of MMPM/2, you must use Selective Install.
  25. Do not run MINSTALL.EXE from an OS/2 Window session.
  26.  
  27. MMPM/2 installation automatically detects supported devices in
  28. the system. It does not, however, automatically configure
  29. IRQ, DMA, and I/O settings. You must know which settings to use
  30. based on the jumpers set on the devices. To see the IRQ, DMA,
  31. or I/O currently in use:
  32.  
  33. 1. Open an OS/2 Window session.
  34. 2. At the command prompt, type the following and press Enter:
  35.  
  36.       RMVIEW /xxx
  37.  
  38.    where xxx is IRQ, DMA, or IO.
  39.  
  40. Supported Hardware
  41.  
  42. Supported devices in OS/2 Warp MMPM/2 are as follows.

  46. * Sound Blaster 8-bit (SBD2.SYS)--DSP Chip MUST be 2.0
  47. * Sound Blaster MCV 8-bit (SBD2.SYS)--DSP Chip MUST be 2.0

  88. * Sounds repeating after startup or during playback of WAV
  89.   file:
  90.  
  91.   - Always IRQ conflicts. Refer to the documentation to find the
  92.     IRQ settings for devices installed on your system.
  93.  
  94. * No system sound, or the system locks up, after MMPM/2
  95.   installation:
  96.  
  97.   1. Make sure IRQs, DMAs, and I/O addresses are not being
  98.      shared by other devices.
  99.  
  100.      Note: Make sure address 330 is not being used by any other
  101.            device. Address 330 is used by the sound card for the
  102.            MIDI port. Usually Adaptec cards use this address.
  103.  
  104.   2. Check jumpers on the sound card. Make sure they match what
  105.      you selected for the card during Selective Install of
  106.      Multimedia. Check the CONFIG.SYS file.
  107.  
  108.   3. Make sure the correct card was selected during Selective
  109.     Install of Multimedia.
  110.  
  111. * SYS1201 error on sound-card driver after MMPM/2 installation:
  112.  
  113.   1. Make sure the card is installed in the system.
  114.  
  115.   2. Make sure you are using a card that MMPM/2 supports.
  116.  
  117.   3. If you are using a Sound Blaster (8-bit), make sure the
  118.      card is using the DSP 2.0 chip. The DSP chip is labeled
  119.      CT 1351.
  120.  
  121.   4. Make sure the correct card was selected during Selective
  122.     Install of Multimedia.
  123.  
  124.   Run RMVIEW to check resources currently used in OS/2.
  125.  
  126. * WAV files sounds are truncated:
  127.  
  128.   Check the DEVICE statement for the sound card in the
  129.   CONFIG.SYS file. For example:
  130.  
  131.      DEVICE=C:\MMOS2\SBP2D2.SYS 1 1 5 220 4 /N:SBAud1$
  132.  
  133.   4 is the buffer value and can be changed to 2, 4, 6, or 8.
  134.  
  135. Make sure you are using the latest MMPM/2 drivers for your sound
  136. card. Contact the manufacturer of the drivers.
  137.  
  138. MMPM/2 Mini-Applications
  139.  
  140. * The following error is received when starting the Digital
  141.   Audio program:
  142.  
  143.      Desired action not supported or card may be defective.
  144.  
  145.   - This is usually a hardware conflict. Check the IRQs, DMAs,
  146.     and I/O addresses.
  147.  
  148.   - Another session or application might be using the sound
  149.     card. Device-sharing is not allowed.
  150.  
  151. * When playing software motion video (AVI) from CD-ROM, video
  152.   is slow or jumpy:
  153.  
  154.   If you are using a CD-ROM that is connected to the CD
  155.   Interface of a supported sound card:
  156.  
  157.   a. Make sure you are using the latest driver from the
  158.      manufacturer (TMV1SCSI.ADD and SBCD2.ADD).
  159.  
  160.   b. Make sure you are running at the highest resolution and
  161.      have at least 1 MB of memory on the video card.
  162.  
  163. Other Problems
  164.  
  165. * After installing MMPM/2, you can no longer get your DOS
  166.   applications to produce sound on a Sound Blaster adapter:
  167.  
  168.   1. Install the DOS drivers for the card.
  169.  
  170.   2. Make sure the IRQs, DMAs, and I/O addresses match what was
  171.      set during MINSTALL.
  172.  
  173.   3. From a DOS Full Screen session, go to the directory that
  174.      was created for the DOS drivers.
  175.  
  176.   4. Run SBMIDI.
  177.  
  178.   5. Go to the PLAYMIDI directory. At the command prompt, type
  179.      PLAYMIDI JAZZ and press Enter.
  180.  
  181.   6. This plays a MIDI file and initializes the sound card.
  182.  
  183.   7. Press Esc to stop the MIDI file from playing, and run the
  184.      executable file for the game.
  185.  
  186. * You have MMPM/2 installed and go to a DOS Full Screen session
  187.   and play a game. When you exit, the system sounds begin to
  188.   repeat or loop:
  189.  
  190.   There is an IRQ conflict. Make sure IRQs, DMAs, and I/O
  191.   addresses match what is in the CONFIG.SYS file for the MMPM/2
  192.   driver for the sound card.
  193.  
  194. Tips
  195.  
  196. ReelMagic
  197.  
  198. 1. MMPM/2 supports MPEG playback using ReelMagic. You must
  199.    select both ReelMagic Audio and ReelMagic Video.
  200.  
  201. 2. Sound Blaster cards are the only cards under OS/2 that
  202.    support MPEG Audio.
  203.  
  204. 3. If you are using a ReelMagic card in their system, run in
  205.    640x480 resolution at 256 colors. Higher color modes give
  206.    unpredictable results. This is a hardware limitation of the
  207.    ReelMagic card.
  208.  
  209. Digital Video
  210.  
  211. Digital Video supports playback of AutoDesk 3D FLC and FLI
  212. formats. It also provides playback of audio with the file. If
  213. you want to play an AutoDesk file and also have an audio file
  214. to play with it, you must:
  215.  
  216. 1. Have an FLC or FLI file on the hard disk; for example,
  217.    TEST.FLI.
  218.  
  219. 2. Have a WAV file with the same name as the AutoDesk File
  220.    in the same directory; for example, TEST.WAV.
  221.  
  222. 3. Open Digital Video and select File open; then load
  223.    TEST.FLI and select Play. The movie starts and plays the
  224.    WAV file with the same name.
  225.  
  226. Note: AUDIO and VIDEO sync will not be working. If the FLI file
  227.       is shorter than the WAV file, the audio continues after
  228.       the movie stops. This is working as designed. You need
  229.       to edit the WAV file to match the FLI length.
  230.

  232.

  239. WINOS2 Audio Support
  240.  
  241. OS/2 Warp supplies the Windows drivers for the supported sound
  242. cards in MMPM/2. The sound card you select during MMPM/2
  243. installation determines the Windows drivers copied to the hard
  244. disk.
  245.  
  246. The drivers are not automatically installed in WIN-OS/2. You
  247. must open the Control Panel and select Drivers to install the
  248. Windows drivers. These drivers help you set up the WIN-OS/2
  249. session with sound. If you have any problems with the drivers,
  250. contact the manufacturer of the sound card for support. The
  251. drivers are being supplied as-is.
  252.  
  253. If you have a problem with the supplied Windows drivers,
  254. contact the respective manufacturer for the latest drivers.
  255.  
  256. Removing MMPM/2
  257.  
  258. Do not use Selective Install or Selective Uninstall to
  259. remove MMPM/2. Use the following procedure instead.
  260.  
  261. 1. Back up the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS file.
  262. 2. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file and remove all MMOS2 statements.
  263. 3. Delete the Multimedia folder.
  264. 4. Shut down the system and then restart it.
  265. 5. Remove the MMOS2 directory and subdirectories.
  266. 6. Run Selective Install to install MMPM/2.
  267.  
  268. Contact the manufacturer for file updates and location.
