OSINWHCD - INSTALLING OS/2 FOR WINDOWS FROM THE WHITE LABEL CD-ROM
01/19/96
=======================================================================
Installing OS/2 for Windows from the White-Label CD-ROM
=======================================================================
Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures
--------------------------------------------------------------
DESCRIPTION
This document contains information about installing OS/2 for Windows
from the white-label CD-ROM.
RESOLUTION
Note: Make sure you have a backup of any file you intend to change.
There are two README files in the OS2SE21 subdirectory that you can
view or print in DOS or OS/2. This directory also contains images of
all the diskettes. The files are:
* README.INS (located on DISK3_)
* README (located on DISK2_)
Installing the OS/2 for Windows CD-ROM White Label
--------------------------------------------------
To install OS/2 for Windows using the CD-ROM with the white label,
create the Installation Diskette and DISK1 images on diskette:
1. Start the system with DOS.
2. If drive A is a 3.5-inch drive, insert a formatted diskette and type
the following commands, pressing Enter after each (x is the CD-ROM
drive letter):
x:\DISKIMGS\LOADDSKF x:\DISKIMGS\OS2\35\DISK0_CD.DSK
x:\DISKIMGS\LOADDSKF x:\DISKIMGS\OS2\35\DISK1_CD.DSK
If drive A is a 5.25-inch drive, insert a formatted diskette
and type the following commands, pressing Enter after each:
x:\DISKIMGS\LOADDSKF x:\DISKIMGS\OS2\525\DISK0_CD.DSK
x:\DISKIMGS\LOADDSKF x:\DISKIMGS\OS2\525\DISK1_CD.DSK
3. If the CD-ROM is attached to one of the following devices, and is
set up correctly, it should be recognized during the installation.
The OS/2 drivers for CD-ROMs connected to SCSI controllers are:
Adaptec:
AHA152X.ADD
AHA154X.ADD
AHA164X.ADD
AHA174X.ADD
Future Domain:
FD16-700.ADD
FD8XX.ADD
FD7000EX.ADD
DPT:
DPT20XX.ADD
If your CD-ROM is not attached to a device listed above:
* Contact the vendor of the interface or SCSI card to obtain an OS/2
driver.
* Ask for the name of the driver to download from the vendor's BBS
or IBM PCC BBS (919-517-0001).
* You can create diskettes from images and install OS/2 using
diskettes. README.INS provides the procedure for creating OS/2
diskettes.
* Perform the installation from hard disk to hard disk, as described
in the following topic.
Hard Disk-to-Hard-Disk Installation
-----------------------------------
1. Start your system from DOS.
2. Type MD TEMP and press Enter to make a temporary directory.
3. Type XCOPY x:\OS2SE21\*.* /S c:\TEMP and press Enter (x is the
CD-ROM drive; c is a drive that contains enough disk space for the
images, or OS/2, or both).
4. To create the Installation Diskette, type the following and press
Enter after each (size is 35 or 525; x is the CD-ROM drive letter):
x:\DISKIMGS\LOADDSKF
x:\DISKIMGS\OS2\size\DISK0.DSK A:
5. To create the DISK1 Diskette, type the following and press Enter
after each:
x:\DISKIMGS\LOADDSKF
x:\DISKIMGS\OS2\size\DISK1.DSK A:
6. Edit the CONFIG.SYS on the new DISK1.
Change: SET OS2_SHELL=SYSINST2.EXE
To: SET OS2_SHELL=SYSINST2.EXE C:\TEMP
Save and exit the file.
You can start the installation if you have:
* Installation Diskette
* DISK1 Diskette
* Diskette images in a directory called TEMP on the hard disk
7. Insert the OS/2 Installation Diskette in drive A and restart your
system.
8. When prompted, insert DISK1 and continue the installation.
WIN311.ZIP for Windows 3.11 and Windows for Workgroups 3.X COM Ports
Not Available when Using OS/2 for Windows with XR06300
---------------------------------------------------------------------
A maintenance diskette, WIN311.ZIP, is available for OS/2. The software
is not an upgrade, but code modifications enabling OS/2 for Windows to
be compatible with:
* MS Windows 3.11
* Windows for Workgroups 3.X
MS Windows and OS/2 for Windows must be installed before you install
WIN311.ZIP. Service Pak XR06300 can be installed, if necessary.
WIN311.ZIP must be installed LAST on the system.
Dealers and resellers can order WIN311.ZIP (part number P83G8740)
through GEMS. These diskettes were sent to area PSM Brand Managers.
WIN311.ZIP is available from:
* CompuServe: GO OS2SUPPO--Library 17
* OS2BBS: OS/2 Fix section of the software library
* Prodigy: Fix section of the download library, IBM files section
* Internet: software.watson.ibm.com
The WIN311.ZIP is LAST to be installed. Some systems receive errors
because of read-only files. If errors occur, type ATTRIB -r filename to
remove the read-only attribute. For filename, use the name of the file
in the error.
Installing if WIN-OS/2 Support is Not Installed
-----------------------------------------------
1. Do a Selective Install for WIN-OS/2 support (if the Service Pak is
installed, run A:SERVICE from the Service Pak diskettes before
continuing with the WIN311.ZIP installation).
2. Type PKUNZIP WIN311-D A: and press Enter.
3. Go to an OS/2 Full Screen session.
4. At the command prompt, type x: and press Enter (x is the drive where
Windows is installed).
5. Type A:\INSTALL and press Enter.
6. Remove the diskette; then shut down and restart the system.
Installing with WIN-OS/2 Already Installed
------------------------------------------
1. Type PKUNZIP WIN311 -D A: and press Enter.
2. Go to an OS/2 Full Screen session.
3. At the command prompt, type x: and press Enter (x is the drive where
Windows is installed).
4. Type A:\INSTALL and press Enter.
5. Remove the diskette; then shut down and restart the system.
Upgrading Windows 3.1 to Windows for Workgroups
-----------------------------------------------
1. Install Windows for Workgroups over Windows 3.1.
Note: If you are installing on a system with Dual Boot or Boot
Manager, you must switch to DOS for the installation.
2. Insert a diskette in drive A. Using PKUNZIP from the root directory,
type PKUNZIP WIN311 -D A: and press Enter.
3. Go to an OS/2 Full Screen session.
4. At the command prompt, type x: and press Enter (x is the drive where
Windows is installed).
5. Type A:\INSTALL and press Enter.
Note: Upon completion, the following message appears:
Install successfully completed
If you do a Selective Install of WIN-OS/2 after applying WIN311.ZIP, or
reapply the Service Pak diskettes, you need to reapply WIN311.ZIP.
WIN311.ZIP is always LAST to be installed.
COM Ports Not Available when Using OS/2 for Windows with XR06300 and
Windows for Workgroups 3.11
--------------------------------------------------------------------
When running OS/2 for Windows with Windows for Workgroups 3.11,
WIN311.ZIP should be used. After applying WIN311.ZIP, WIN-OS/2 should
work except for the error message, "COM ports not available." The
COMM.DRV driver in Windows for Workgroups 3.11 is different from the
COMM.DRV driver in standard Windows 3.10. WIN311.ZIP did not address
the driver.
Replace COMM.DRV in the Windows for Workgroups \WINDOWS\SYSTEM
directory with the COMM.DRV file from standard Windows 3.10. Use the
COMM.DRV file from standard Windows 3.10, not the one from Windows For
Workgroups 3.11.
