Western Digital Caviar 1.2 to 2.5 G Drives Experiencing
Extended Attribute Corruption and Lost Directory Structures
=======================================================================
Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures
--------------------------------------------------------------
DESCRIPTION
Western Digital Caviar 1.2 and 2.5 G IDE drives, manufactured prior to
May of 1996 and configured in master/slave configurations, may
experience these types of problems:
* Errors messages, such as SYS0551
* Lost data
* Lost directories
* CHKDSK running on startup after a proper shutdown
* Certain traps on HPFS (High Performance Filing System) partitions.
This corruption manifests itself on the last partition on the master
hard drive only.
RESOLUTION
If you encounter these errors, here are two things to consider:
* Check your CONFIG.SYS file for advanced power management statements,
containing APM.SYS and VAPM.SYS. There have been some problems
reported where these features appear to cause improper shutdowns,
leading to data corruption. Disabling advanced power
management may help avoid the problem.
* It would be helpful in determining if there is any damage to the disk
by running a LOW LEVEL CHKDSK with DiskManager; this utility ships
with these larger drives and can help determine whether physical
damage has occurred.
Note: Contact Western Digital for guidance before using this utility.
Contact Western Digital for a resolution to this hardware issue.
