This package contains 5 files:
1. config.sys for bootable ls120
2. ibm1506.add hard disk driver
3. ibmatapi.flt zip/ls120 ide atapi driver
4. contents of files on my bootable 120MB disk
5. this readme file
This is written by (c) Juraj Sipos, 1999, Slovak Republic, xvudpapc@savba.sk
This is the info file on how to boot OS/2 from 120MB ls120 disks. You will
get an OS/2 Warp 4 maintenance boot disk with all the necessary files
and cdrom access on a 120MB ls120 disk.
I have been unsuccessful to find any info on this issue, so I started my own
experiment. I searched through many Internet engines, meta engines too, and
OS/2 bbs sharewares. I found nothing. This project is open and I will
try to work on this.
The zip file you just unpacked contains the config.sys and some key files.
Keep the structure and order of the config.sys, but you may modify it
later to see if other alternatives work. Probably the best idea would be
to use bootos2, which is a program that can transfer OS/2 system to
disks - this is my advice on how to experiment later.
The key files to booting ls120 120MB disks, which now boot on my machine, are:
ibmatapi.flt
ibm1506.add
I include these files in this package for your convenience. If you used
any fixpacks and you might have deleted the original ibm1506.add file,
it's here.
ibm1506.add is a key file because only the original version of warp 4
of ibm1506.add works. Obviously, I haven't tested other fixpack or Warp 3
versions of ibm1506.add, but I have an 8.4gb hard disk and ibm1506.add
that supports more than 8gb hard disks makes the ls120 120MB disks
hang while booting. But this is OK, you only cannot use fdisk properly
(prepare 1.44MB boot disk, for example, download boot-man.zip from this
archive, put a new ibm1506.add file to it and fdisk will work correctly
with disks larger than 8gb).
I made the following steps to make my 120MB disks bootable:
:(Here you may wonder why I'm booting to DOS, but I don't have OS/2 presently
installed on my hard disk. It's because I'm too lazy for repartition):
1. I booted to DOS. Then I put an empty 120MB disk to drive which was B:
DOS was aware of this ls120 disk, because it was detected by BIOS.
(Note: ls120 A: drive must be made bootable from BIOS, so you must change
the boot option in the BIOS setup later. Because I normally boot from 1.44
floppies, I decided to change this option later, first I needed to prepare
a 120MB boot disk, that's why my ls120 drive was B: drive.)
2. I copied (from DOS) the key system files from OS/2 1.44MB boot diskettes
to 120MB B: drive. I invoked a normal copy command. (copy a:\*.* b:)
3. I prepared 1.44MB OS/2 boot diskettes with atapi ide floppy (ls120 or zip)
driver - I put ibmatapi.flt to the diskettes with pertinent reference to
it in config.sys (basedev=ibmatapi.flt).
(Note: ibmatapi.flt is a driver for zip/ls120 atapi ide drives, so it is
probable that the steps you take here may also work with Iomega zip
drives.) I additionally copied ibmatapi.flt to B: drive (ls120) and
modified the config.sys on B: drive appropriately.
4. I booted from these 1.44MB floppies. After successful booting I did
sysinstx.com B: - this transferred the system to B: (to the 120MB disk).
5. I changed the configuration in BIOS setup to make my ls120
disk bootable.
6. I booted from ls120 120MB disk, but the system hanged after the logo,
so I started to experiment. :( This took me some time):.
After I spent guessing what might be wrong, I was finally successful to
boot OS/2 from a 120MB disk, albeit in a maintenance form (with fdisk,
simple file commander, etc.), but it is very likely that a nice WPS
is possible, too. Now I'm very happy I don't have to use all 3 utility
diskettes to bot OS/2. My 1.44 floppy became inaccessible, though, but it
doesn't matter. Maybe I should disable it in BIOS setup as A: and enable
it as B: I removed the logo because it slows down the boot process.
Now I can run fc.exe, lxlite.exe and many command-line programs. I hope
this will work for you.
Do it as I did it, copy my config.sys to your ls120 disks, prepare the files
I used and enjoy.
