  5. WORKPLACE SHELL PROBLEMS/WORKAROUNDS

  8. The following problems are addressed in this fax document:
  9.  
  10.    BlankDesktop - Some customers have experienced a blank
  11.           desktop containing only a mobile mouse
  12.           pointer.  If this cannot be resolved
  13.           permanently with Alt-F1 the workaround
  14.           in this Info APAR may apply
  15.  
  16.    DrivesIcon    - Some customers are experiencing problems
  17.           with DRIVES icons opening and then closing
  18.           immediately.
  19.  
  20.    LostIcon    - Customer has lost an icon for a workplace
  21.           shell folder, such as the OS2 System Folder
  22.           icon has defaulted to yellow folder.
  23.  
  24.    SaveIcons    - Customers are having problems associating an
  25.           icon with an object .
  26.  
  27.    Copying Large- Copying large folders from any type drive to any other
  28.    Folders      drive sometimes causes many subfolders to be created
  29.  
  30.  
  31. ===========================================================
  32.  
  33. BLANKDESKTOP
  34. ============
  35. If a customer experiences a blank desktop containing only a
  36. mobile mouse pointer he/she may have INI file or CONFIG.SYS
  37. corruption.  One possible cause for this blank desktop
  38. problem that we've found are extra SET USER_INI and SET
  39. SYSTEM_INI statements in the CONFIG.SYS.  The following
  40. statements are as they should appear:
  41.  
  42. SET USER_INI=C: OS2 OS2.INI
  43. SET SYSTEM_INI=C: OS2 OS2SYS.INI
  44.  
  45. If the customer has any additional SET USER_INI or SET
  46. SYSTEM_INI statements in their CONFIG.SYS, they should be
  47. removed.  Also, a MAKEINI or Alt-F1 may be required to
  48. return the desktop to normal.
  49.  
  50. DRIVESICON
  51. ==========
  52.  
  53. Some customers are experiencing problems with DRIVES icons
  54. opening and then closing immediately.  This seems to be a
  55. disk problem which can be cleared up with a CHKDSK on the
  56. offending disk.  To do so:
  57.    1) Boot with the OS/2 install diskette.
  58.    2) Follow prompts and enter install disk 1 when prompted.
  59.    3) Follow the prompts, ESC to exit when prompted.
  60.    4) With install disk 2 in the A Drive run:
  61.          CHKDSK /F (FAT)
  62.         or
  63.          CHKDSK /F:3 (HPFS)
  64.  
  65.    If this does not work, have the customer erase the hidden
  66.    file WP_ROOT._SF (Fat) or WP ROOT. SF (HPFS).
  67.    Of course, the file will have to be unhidden first.
  68.  
  69. LOSTICON
  70. ========
  71.  
  72. Customer has lost an icon for a workplace shell folder, such
  73. as the OS2 System Folder icon has defaulted to yellow
  74. folder-to recover:
  75.  
  76. 1) Must have access to another OS/2 2.0 machine.
  77. 2) Copy the Extended Attributes from this other machine's
  78.    OS/2 System folder to diskette with EAUTIL as follows:
  79.  
  80.   FAT -EAUTIL C: OS!2_2.0_d OS!2_SYS easave /P /S
  81.             or
  82.   HPFS-EAUTIL "C: OS!2 2.0 Desktop OS!2 SYSTEM" easave /P /S
  83.  
  84.    where C:  is the actual drive on which the operating
  85.    system resides
  86. 3) Take the diskette to the machine with the missing
  87.    icon and copy the extended attributes in easave to the
  88.    os2 system folder with eautil:
  89.  
  90.   FAT -EAUTIL C: OS!2_2.0_d OS!2_SYS easave /O /J
  91.             or
  92.   HPFS-EAUTIL "C: OS!2 2.0 Desktop OS!2 SYSTEM" easave /O /J
  93.  
  94.   where it doesn't matter if the machines are mix and match
  95.   Fat and HPFS, just use the right directory names for the
  96.   file system you are copying to or from at the time.  After
  97.   a shutdown and reboot the correct icon should appear, and
  98.   the customer will not have lost any customization.
  99.  
  100. SAVEICONS
  101. =========
  102.  
  103. For Customers having problems associating an icon with an
  104. object this method seems to work:
  105.  
  106. 1) Open a settings notebook for the object.
  107. 2) Select the General Page and push the FIND pushbutton.
  108. 3) Select the LOCATE pushbutton
  109. 4) Select the PATH tab
  110. 5) In the Location field, enter the path in which the icon
  111.    physically resides:    C: MYICONS (or whatever)
  112. 6) Press the OK pushbutton
  113. 7) Change the Name field to the filename of your icon:
  114.    MYICON.ICO (or whatever)
  115. 8) Make sure that ICON is hilighted in your Types box
  116. 9) Check "search just this folder"
  117. 10)Press the Find pushbutton
  118. 11)Your icon should now appear selected on the screen-
  119.    Press OK
  120.  
  121. That should do it! Your icon should now "stick".

  123. PROBLEM WITH COPYING LARGE FOLDERS
  124. ==================================
  125. Copying large folders from any type drive to any other type
  126. drive sometimes causes many subfolders to be created, each with
  127. the entire directory structure of what is being copied. In
  128. essence, this operation will fill a partition with garbage.
  129. Problem seems to be more easily recreatable when source and
  130. destination partitions have different file systems (i.e.,
  131. copying from hpfs to fat).  This problem occurs whether using
  132. context menu to copy or dragging and dropping.
