TITLE: 940309 MOST COMMON SETTINGS FOR IMPROVING
PERFORMANCE IN WINDOWS APPLICATIONS OR WIN-OS/2

DESCRIPTION OF SYMPTOMS:
1. Applications hang the system when doing common functions
like saving a file, printing, or importing data from
another application.
2. Out of memory errors occur.
3. Applications appear to start but return to the icon.
4. Various error messages occur but they seem unrelated to
the function in process.
SUMMARY OF RESOLUTION:
1. OS/2 Support line has a file available on SENDFAX (#603)
or on FAXLIST (DOSSET) with a complete description of
most available settings.
2. All applications will vary in some settings but
represented below are the most common for optimal
performance.
DETAILS OF RESOLUTION:
1. Refer to pgs 185-186 of OS/2 2.1: Using the
Operating System technical manual for procedures on
going to the Settings page for a program object.
2. Once in the WIN-OS/2 settings (with settings
listed in left box), click on Help button.
3. Scroll to Related Information.
4. Double-click on DOS and WIN-OS/2 Settings. From
the different groups, select the following.
5. DOS memory settings: DOS_HIGH = On DOS_UMB = On
EMS_MEMORY_LIMIT = 0 or 2048 DPMI_MEMORY_LIMIT = 64
XMS_MEMORY_LIMIT = 4-10Mb
6. DOS video settings:VIDEO_FASTPASTE = On
VIDEO_WINDOW_REFRESH = 5 7. Other DOS
settings: HW_ROM_TO_RAM = On IDLE_SECONDS = Max (60)
IDLE_SENSITIVITY = Max (100) DOS_FILES = 50 (or more) 9.
Once these are set, click on Save radio button. 10.
Exit from program's settings.
