  6.                     PERFORMANCE IN WINDOWS APPLICATIONS OR WIN-OS/2

  9.        DESCRIPTION OF SYMPTOMS:
  10.        1. Applications hang the system when doing common functions
  11.           like saving a file, printing, or importing data from
  12.           another application.
  13.        2. Out of memory errors occur.
  14.        3. Applications appear to start but return to the icon.
  15.        4. Various error messages occur but they seem unrelated to
  16.           the function in process.

  18.        SUMMARY OF RESOLUTION:
  19.  
  20.        1. OS/2 Support line has a file available on SENDFAX (#603)
  21.           or on FAXLIST (DOSSET) with a complete description of
  22.           most available settings.
  23.        2. All applications will vary in some settings but
  24.           represented below are the most common for optimal
  25.           performance.

  27.        DETAILS OF RESOLUTION:
  28.        1. Refer to pgs 185-186 of OS/2 2.1:  Using the
  29.           Operating System technical manual for procedures on
  30.           going to the Settings page for a program object.
  31.        2. Once in the WIN-OS/2 settings (with settings
  32.           listed in left box), click on Help button.
  33.        3. Scroll to Related Information.
  34.        4. Double-click on DOS and WIN-OS/2 Settings. From
  35.           the different groups, select the following.
  36.        5. DOS memory settings:  DOS_HIGH = On DOS_UMB = On
  37.           EMS_MEMORY_LIMIT = 0 or 2048 DPMI_MEMORY_LIMIT = 64
  38.           XMS_MEMORY_LIMIT = 4-10Mb
  39.        6. DOS video settings:VIDEO_FASTPASTE = On
  40.           VIDEO_WINDOW_REFRESH = 5 7. Other DOS
  41.           settings:  HW_ROM_TO_RAM = On IDLE_SECONDS = Max (60)
  42.           IDLE_SENSITIVITY = Max (100) DOS_FILES = 50 (or more) 9.
  43.           Once these are set, click on Save radio button.  10.
  44.           Exit from program's settings.
