Error OS2MOUSE.DRV in OS/2 for Windws(CP) 5/04/94
File:OS2MOUSE.fax 4/20/94
TITLE: 940107 ERROR LOADING OS2MOUSE.DRV OCCURS RANDOMLY
AFTER INSTALL OF OS/2 2.1 FOR WINDOWS - NOTE ADDITIONAL
PROCEDURE IF PCTOOLS OR NORTON DESKTOP IS PRESENT
DESCRIPTION OF SYMPTOMS:
Error loading OS2MOUSE.DRV occurs randomly in 386/486,
SX/DX and Dell systems. The failure occurs in systems
where the statement OS2MOUSE.DRV=MOUSE.DRV is not REMed in
SYSTEM.INI in the Windows directory after installation of
OS/2 2.1 for Windows, and Program Manager is launched.
Actually, the statement should not be REMed. Rather it's
only in recreating the error that the statement is REMed.
NOTE: If either PCTOOLS for Windows or NORTON DESKTOP for
Windows is present prior to OS/2 for Windows being
installed, follow last procedure (6) only.
SUMMARY OF RESOLUTION:
Recreate the symptom as follows before trying workarounds
in Details of Resolution:
1. Edit SYSTEM.INI statement in Windows directory to:
REM OS2MOUSE.DRV=MOUSE.DRV
2. Save new SYSTEM.INI. Launch Windows (or WIN-OS/2
session) from DOS command line.
3. Error will display: "Error loading OS2MOUSE.DRV"
4. Control will pass back to the VDM command line.
5. With SYSTEM.INI edited, launch Windows or WIN-OS/2
session with /b switch. Example, at command prompt type:
WIN /b <Enter> This will create a BOOTLOG.TXT file, and if
the BOOTLOG.TXT file is brought into an editor (or typed at
a command line), the load failure code is 02.
6. With PCTOOLS or NORTON DESKTOP for Windows already
installed: Reinstall Windows base code. Selectively
install WIN-OS/2 support, which will prompt for both
Windows and OS/2 diskettes; Test Windows by bringing up
Program Manager, then reinstall PCTOOLS and NORTON DESKTOP.
DETAILS OF RESOLUTION:
After recreating error or viewing symptom, the workarounds
are as follows:
1. If necessary, correct PATH= statement in AUTOEXEC.BAT to
point to WINDOWS directory.
Pg 2
2. Selective Install of WIN-OS/2 support. This should only
be done in cases where selections were made during the
original install of OS/2 for Windows. This procedure may
prompt for diskettes, either OS/2 or Windows, for various
files to be installed or drivers to be loaded to recover
the Windows setup.
Caution should be exercised that files and/or drivers are
not deleted beforehand, else the system configuration will
be altered.
3. Verify that MOUSE.DRV located in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM
directory is dated 3-10-92, and is 10672 bytes in size.
4. Unpack the Windows 3.1 GA mouse driver from WINDOWS
