Upgrade OS/2 2.0 to 2.1 with LS 3.0-A (3 7/12/94
UPGRADING FROM OS/2 2.0 TO 2.1 WITH OS/2 LAN SERVER
VERSION 3.0 - ADVANCED AND 386 HPFS INSTALLED
DESCRIPTION OF SYMPTOMS
With IBM OS/2 LAN Server 3.0 - Advanced and 386 HPFS installed,
need to upgrade a system from IBM OS/2 2.0 to OS/2 2.1.
SUMMARY OF RESOLUTION
The following procedure provides the steps to upgrade an IBM
OS/2 2.0 system to OS/2 2.1 with OS/2 LAN Server 3.0 -
Advanced and 386 HPFS installed:
1. Create 386 HPFS Boot Diskettes (for LAN Server 3.0 on
OS/2 2.0 base).
2. Install OS/2 LAN Server ServicePak IP07045.
3. Install UHPFS.ZIP. (This step is not needed if you
already have XR06050 or later installed.)
4. Run CHKDSK.
5. Verify all expected features of LAN are installed,
and remove local security if installed.
6. Back up the NET.ACC and the access control profiles.
7. Back up the DCDB.
8. Run PREPACL.
9. Install OS/2 2.1 and required OS/2 base fixes.
10. Run PREPACL.
11. Restore local security if required.
12. Create new 386 HPFS Boot Diskettes (for LAN Server
3.0 on OS/2 2.1 base).
Appendix A: Recovery Procedure for Locked Files
DETAILS OF RESOLUTION
RESOURCES REQUIRED:
- Network Administrator Reference Volume 1 Planning and
Installation Version 3.0 (S96F-8428).
- Network Administrator Reference Volume 3 Network
Administrator Tasks Version 3.0 (S96F-8430).
- Blank formatted 1.44 diskettes.
- IBM OS/2 LAN Server Version 3.0 Installation
diskettes.
- IP07045, the IBM OS/2 LAN Server Version 3.0
ServicePak*. (The pre-requisite for this is WR07045.
It must be installed first.)
- IBM OS/2 Version 2.0 Installation diskettes.
- IBM OS/2 Version 2.1 Installation diskettes.
- UHPFS.ZIP, an IBM OS/2 2.0 base fix**.
- 21WPSF.ZIP, an IBM OS/2 2.1 base fix**.

Compuserve or by calling the IBM Software Solution
Service (1-800-992-4777).
** Available from OS2BBS (404-835-6600) or
Compuserve.
NOTE: Skip any step which has already been done on the
workstation; e.g., Do not install IP07045 during this
procedure if it is already installed on the system.
Exception: Always run the CHKDSK step.
Should a problem occur while following this procedure:
1. Repeat the step to verify all instructions
were followed.
2. Call the IBM Software Solution Service for
assistance.
1. If not already done, make a set of OS/2 2.0 386 HPFS
Boot Diskettes:
a. Diskcopy the first three OS/2 2.0 installation
diskettes:
OS/2 2.0 Installation Disk
OS/2 2.0 Installation Disk 1.
OS/2 2.0 Installation Disk 2.
b. Put the original diskettes away.
c. Label the new diskettes as follows:
OS/2 2.0 386 HPFS Boot Disk 1
OS/2 2.0 386 HPFS Boot Disk 2
OS/2 2.0 386 HPFS Boot Disk 3
d. Insert the OS/2 2.0 386 HPFS Boot Disk 2 (created
in the previous step) and delete the BUNDLE file.
e. Run the MAKEDISK utility, beginning with Step 2 on
page C-26 of the Network Administrator Reference
Volume 3 Network Administrator Tasks. (Use the
OS/2 2.0 386 HPFS Boot Disk 2 created in the
previous step 1c.)
Be sure to verify the boot diskettes by following
Steps 4-7 of the MAKEDISK Utility in the above
listed manual.
f. If problems occur making these diskettes or the
workstation doesn't start using the OS/2 2.0 386
HPFS Boot Diskettes, do the following:
1) Repeat the MAKEDISK step (try making the disks
manually, page C-27).
2) Call the IBM Software Solution Service for
assistance.
If the workstation starts successfully, continue
with the next step.
2. Install OS/2 LAN Server ServicePak IP07045:
Refer to the IP07045.INF file (enter VIEW IP07045
at the command line) on diskette 1 for
installation instructions. To view this readme
file, insert diskette 1 of the ServicePak in
drive A: and type the following at an OS/2
Command Prompt:
VIEW A:IP07045
NOTE: The following step is not needed if you have
XR06050 or later installed.
3. Unpack the UHPFS.ZIP file and copy the UHPFS.DLL,
386HPFS.IFS, and HPFS200.386 files to the 386 HPFS
Boot Diskettes:
a. Remove any diskette which may be in drive a:,
then shut down the system and reboot (if not done
after installing IP07045).
b. Insert into drive a: the diskette containing
UHPFS.ZIP.
c. Issue the following command at an OS/2 Command
Prompt:
PKUNZIP2 A:UHPFS.ZIP path
path = the drive letter where OS/2 2.0 is
installed and the subdirectory where
UHPFS.DLL is currently installed.
(e.g., PKUNZIP2 A:UHPFS.ZIP D:\OS2\DLL
d. Remove the diskette from drive A: and insert the
OS/2 2.0 386 HPFS Boot Disk 2 in drive A:.
e. Issue the following commands at an OS/2 Command
Prompt:
COPY x:\IBM386FS\HPFS386.IFS A:
COPY x:\IBM386FS\HPFS200.386 A:
(x = the drive letter where OS/2 2.0 is
installed.)
f. Remove the diskette from drive A: and insert the
OS/2 2.0 386 HPFS Boot Disk 3 in drive A:.
g. Issue the following command at an OS/2 Command
Prompt:
Copy path\UHPFS.DLL a:
path = the drive and subdirectory specified
in Step 3c above.
h. Remove the diskette from drive A: and shut down
the system.
4. Run CHKDSK from the OS/2 2.0 386 HPFS Boot Disks:
a. Insert the 386 HPFS Boot Disk 1 in drive A: and
reboot the system.
b. Follow the prompts until the second diskette
is complete and the "Welcome" screen is displayed.
Escape to the OS/2 Command Prompt.
c. Remove Disk 2 and insert the OS/2 2.0 386 HPFS
Boot Disk 3 in drive A:.
d. Execute the following command twice on each 386
HPFS partition:
CHKDSK x: /F
(where x is the target drive)
e. Remove the diskette from the drive A and reboot
the system.
5. If Fault Tolerance is installed, use the Fault Tolerance
Setup (FTSETUP) utility to unmirror and deactivate
currently mirrored drives. (See the IBM OS/2 LAN Server
Network Administrator Reference Volume 3: Network
Administrator Tasks Version 3.0, pages 12-6 and C-9,
for the procedures to unmirror and deactivate drives.)
6. Run the OS/2 LAN installation program to ensure that
386 HPFS and all expected features are installed.
Remove Local Security if it is installed:
a. Open the LAN Services folder.
b. Activate the Installation and Configuration
icon.
c. Select Advanced Installation.
d. Ensure that the 386 HPFS feature and all expected
features are installed.
e. If they are not, install and configure them now.
f. If Local Security is installed, remove it at
this time.
g. Complete the Advanced Installation.
7. Back up the NET.ACC and the Access Control Profiles:
a. Log on as an administrator.
b. Issue the following command:
BACKACC x:\ /S
(x = the drive where OS/2 2.0 is installed)
c. From an OS/2 command prompt, change to the
\IBMLAN\ACCOUNTS directory; and copy the
following files to a diskette or a disk that will
not be affected by the OS/2 installation:
NETACC.BKP
ACLBAKx.ACL (x = the drive where OS/2 is
installed)
(These files are being saved for possible recovery
purposes.)
8. Back up the Domain Controller DataBase (DCDB) by using
either XCOPY (if it will fit on 1 diskette) or
another backup program:
(CAUTION: Do NOT use a DOS backup program to back up
these files. DOS backup programs cannot detect the
existence of any Access Control Profiles.)
If using XCOPY, at an OS/2 command prompt, issue
the following command:
XCOPY x:\IBMLAN\DCDB y:\ /S /E
x = the drive where LAN is installed
y = a diskette or a disk that will NOT be
affected by the OS/2 installation
9. Run PREPACL to remove the 386HPFS Access Control
Profiles:
a. At an OS/2 command prompt, issue the following
command:
PREPACL /P /B:filename.ext /D:x:\
(filename.ext = your choice of an output
filename
x = the drive where OS/2 2.0 is installed)
b. Copy "filename.ext" that was specified above to a
diskette or disk that will NOT be affected by the
OS/2 installation.
c. Activate the LAN Requester from the LAN Services
folder:
1) Select DEFINITIONS, ACCESS CONTROL, SERVER
(from the menu), HERE (from Options List) and
press Enter.
2) Ensure there are NO Access Control Profiles
defined for the drive where OS/2 2.0 is
installed (the exceptions are \PIPE, \COMM and
\PRINT).
10. Install OS/2 2.1 and required fixes:
a. Insert the OS/2 2.1 Installation diskette in drive
A.
b. Select Shut Down from the Desktop.
c. When all services have been stopped, reboot.
d. Follow the instructions for installation for NOT
formatting the disk drive, and complete the
installation of OS/2 2.1.
e. Following are some possible problems and their
suggested workarounds:
1) If a locked file error occurs, follow the
"Recovery Procedure for Locked Files After
Running PREPACL", Appendix A of this document.
2) If a gray screen displays with no Workplace
Shell (wait about 10 minutes), install fixes
from 21WPSF.ZIP.
3) If errors display while rebooting (e.g.,
SYS1719), edit the CONFIG.SYS to enable 386HPFS
as follows:
a) Place REM in the first position on the
HPFS.IFS line.
b) Move the HPFS386.IFS statement to the top of
the CONFIG.SYS.
c) Reboot the system.
4) Call the IBM Software Solution Service Center
(1-800-992-4777) for any other errors while
installing OS/2 2.1. Request to speak to the
OS/2 Base group.
11. Run PREPACL to replace the 386 HPFS Access Control
Profiles.
a. From an OS/2 command prompt issue the following
command:
PREPACL /R /B:filename.ext
(where "filename.ext" is the path and name
of the "filename.ext" specified previously
in Step 8a.)
b. Shut down, reboot the system, and start the server.
c. Ensure that users can logon and use the server.
12. If Local Security was removed previously, install it
at this time.
a. Open the LAN Services folder.
b. Activate the Installation and Configuration icon.
c. Select Advanced Installation.
d. Install and configure Local Security.
e. Complete the Advanced Installation.
f. Shut down the system and reboot.
13. If Fault Tolerance was removed previously or in
Step 5, run the FTSETUP utility to remirror drives
for Fault Tolerance. (See the IBM OS/2 LAN Server
Network Administrator Reference Volume 3: Network
Administrator Tasks Version 3.0, pages 12-6 and C-9,
for the procedures.)
14. Run the OS/2 LAN installation program to ensure that
386 HPFS and all expected features are installed.
Remove Local Security if it is installed:
a. Open the LAN Services folder.
b. Activate the Installation and Configuration
icon.
c. Select Advanced Installation.
d. Ensure that the 386 HPFS feature and all expected
features are installed.
e. If they are not, install and configure them now.
f. If Local Security is installed, remove it at
this time.
g. Complete the Advanced Installation.
15. Back up the NET.ACC and the Access Control Profiles:
a. Log on as an administrator.
b. Issue the following command:
BACKACC x:\ /S
(x = the drive where OS/2 2.0 is installed)
c. From an OS/2 command prompt, change to the
\IBMLAN\ACCOUNTS directory; and copy the
following files to a diskette or a disk that will
not be affected by the OS/2 installation:
NETACC.BKP
ACLBAKx.ACL (x = the drive where OS/2 is
installed)
(These files are being saved for possible recovery
purposes.)
16. Back up the Domain Controller DataBase (DCDB) by using

another backup program:

17. Run PREPACL to remove the 386HPFS Access Control
Profiles:
a. At an OS/2 command prompt, issue the following
command:
PREPACL /P /B:filename.ext /D:x:\
(filename.ext = your choice of an output
filename
x = the drive where OS/2 2.0 is installed)
b. Copy "filename.ext" that was specified above to a
diskette or disk that will NOT be affected by the
OS/2 installation.
c. Activate the LAN Requester from the LAN Services
folder:
1) Select DEFINITIONS, ACCESS CONTROL, SERVER
(from the menu), HERE (from Options List) and
press Enter.
2) Ensure there are NO Access Control Profiles
defined for the drive where OS/2 2.0 is

18. Install OS/2 2.1 and required fixes:
a. Insert the OS/2 2.1 Installation diskette in drive
A.
b. Select Shut Down from the Desktop.

installation of OS/2 2.1.
e. Following are some possible problems and their

21. Prepare new 386 HPFS Boot diskettes for OS/2 2.1:
a. Diskcopy the first three OS/2 2.1 installation
diskettes:
OS/2 2.1 Installation Disk
OS/2 2.1 Installation Disk 1.
OS/2 2.1 Installation Disk 2.
b. Put the original diskettes away.
c. Label the new diskettes as follows:
OS/2 2.1 386 HPFS Boot Disk 1
OS/2 2.1 386 HPFS Boot Disk 2
OS/2 2.1 386 HPFS Boot Disk 3
d. Insert the OS/2 2.0 386 HPFS Boot Disk 2 (created
in the previous step) and delete the BUNDLE file.
e. Run the MAKEDISK utility, beginning with Step 2
on page C-26 of the Network Administrator Reference
Volume 3 Network Administrator Tasks. (Use the
OS/2 2.1 386 HPFS Boot Disk 2 created in the
previous step 12c.)
Be sure to verify the boot diskettes by following
Steps 4-7 in the above listed manual.
f. If problems occur making these diskettes or the
workstation doesn't start using the OS/2 2.1 386
HPFS Boot Diskettes, do the following:
1) Repeat Step 12.
2) Call the IBM Software Solution Service for
assistance.
NOTE: DISCARD THE OS/2 2.0 386 HPFS BOOT DISKETTES
CREATED IN STEP 1. USE ONLY THE OS/2 2.1
386 HPFS BOOT DISKETTES CREATED IN STEP 12 ON
THIS WORKSTATION.

APPENDIX A: RECOVERY PROCEDURE FOR LOCKED FILES AFTER
RUNNING PREPACL
Files may become locked after doing PREPACL during the
upgrade installation from OS/2 2.0 to OS/2 2.1. This
procedure creates and then removes an access control
profile for the root directory of the file where OS/2
2.0 is installed.
i. Boot the system from the hard drive.
ii. Change the file access via the LAN Requester Full
Screen Interface:
a) Open the LAN Services folder and activate
LAN Requester.
b) Select the following:
DEFINITIONS
ACCESS CONTROL
SERVERS
DISPLAY PROFILES BY SERVER
(List of Servers Panel is displayed.)
HERE
(Manage Access Control-Non-Alias is
displayed.)
NEW
ACTIONS
CREATE
(Create an Access Control Profile panel
is displayed.)
c) Type the following values in the appropriate
fields:
-PARAMETER- -FIELD-
Profile: x:\
(x = the drive where OS/2 2.0
is installed)
Resource type: File
Permissions for Users Group: XRMCDAP
Audit Type parameter: None
and press Enter.
d) Exit out of the Full Screen Interface to the
OS/2 Command Prompt.
e) Select ACTIONS, APPLY.
f) Exit from the LAN Requester Full Screen Interface
(FSI) to the OS/2 command prompt.
iii. Run PREPACL to remove the 386 HPFS Access Control
Profiles created in the previous step (ii):
a) At an OS/2 Command Prompt, issue the following
command:
PREPACL /P /B:filename.ext /D:x:\
(filename.ext = your choice of an output
filename that is different that the one
specified in Step 8.
x = the drive where OS/2 2.0 is installed.)
b) Copy the filename.ext that was specified in
the previous step (iiia) to a diskette or disk
that will NOT be affected by the OS/2 2.1
installation. (This file is being saved for
possible recovery purposes.)
iv. Return to Step 9 of the upgrade procedure and retry
the OS/2 2.1 installation.
