  5.           CONNECTING TO AN AS/400 USING PM TERMINAL.

  11. SYMPTOM:  PM Terminal need to connect to an AS/400
  12.  
  13. RESOLUTION:
  14. 1. Configure the AS/400 for proper asynchronous communication.
  15.    Note: An ASCII controller is required on the AS/400.  More
  16.          information can be obtained about the hardware
  17.          requirements from your AS/400 administrator.
  18. 2. Configure PM Terminal.
  19.    Note: A modem connected to the PC is required in order to
  20.          communicated to the AS/400 or any other system or BBS.
  21. 3. Attempt to connect to the AS/400.  This might require several
  22.    attempts before succeeding due to telephone line noise or
  23.    other outside interference.

  25. PROCEDURES:
  26. 1.  Configure the AS/400 for asynchronous communication.
  27.  
  28.     This should be done by the AS/400 administrator.
  29.     Example:

  39. 2.  Configure PM Terminal.

  41.  a. Ask your AS/400 administrator for the communication settings
  42.     required in order to connect to the AS/400.
  43.      Example:
  44.        Baud rate:              2400
  45.        data bits:                 8
  46.        Parity:                   on
  47.        stop bit:                  1
  48.        Handshaking:            None
  49.        Error Correction:       None
  50.        Terminal Emulation:  3101-20
  51.    This information is required in order to properly configure
  52.    PM Terminal.

  54.  B. Setting Up The Communication Parameters.

  56.     1.  Open the PM Terminal ICON
  57.     2.  Select the Session Menu.
  58.     3.  Select the Setup Profiles menu option.
  59.     4.  Select the Connection button.
  60.     5.  Select the Add button.
  61.     6.  Select OK to accept Standard COM.
  62.     7.  Place a comment that describes this Connection Object.
  63.         For example, Hayes 2400,n,8,1  (2400 BAUD, no parity, 8
  64.         bits, one stop bit).

  66.  C.  Selecting the COM port.

  68.      1.  Select the COM port to be used.
  69.      2.  Select the Setup button.
  70.      3.  Select the Add button.
  71.      4.  Select OK to accept Standard COM.
  72.      5.  Select the List Box button (arrow) to display choices.
  73.      6.  Select the Auto-Dial selection to highlight it.
  74.      7.  Select OK.

  76.  D. Selecting the Modem Type.

  78.      1.  Select the List Box button (arrow) to display choices.
  79.      2.  Select the Hayes Smartmodem 2400, for this example.
  80.          Otherwise select a modem that is similar to your
  81.          modem.
  82.      3.  Select OK.
  83.      4.  Place a comment that describes this MODEM object, for
  84.          example, Hayes Compatible 2400.

  86.  E. Changing The Initialization String.

  88.      1.  Select the Device Initialization String.
  89.      2.  Select the Change button.
  90.      3.  Delete &T5 from the Initialization String.

  92.      Note: If your modem has error checking and flow control,
  93.            you may need to disable it depending on the modem
  94.            connected to the AS/400.  Contact the AS/400
  95.            Administrator to see if error correcting (i.e.
  96.            .32bis/.42bis protocol) is supported by the modem
  97.            attached to the AS/400.  If you have an error
  98.            correcting modem and you need to disable this
  99.            option, you can add &Q0 to the Initialization String.
  100.            Refer to the documentation that came with the modem
  101.            for further information.

  103.      4.  Select OK.
  104.      5.  Select Save.
  105.      6.  Type a name for this Modem object (i.e. Hayes 2400).
  106.      7.  Select Save to save this Modem object.
  107.      8.  Select Close to return to previous menu.

  109.  F. Changing The Baud Rate and Flow Control.

  111.      1.  Select the Communication Parameters.
  112.      2.  Select Change.
  113.      3.  Select the List Box button (arrow) to display choices.
  114.      4.  Select the 2400  (to select the correct baud rate for
  115.          this example).
  116.      5.  Select OK.
  117.      6.  Select the Flow Control entry.
  118.      7.  Select Change.
  119.      8. Select the None option for Transmit Pacing.
  120.      9. Select the None option for Receive Pacing.
  121.     10. Select OK.
  122.     11. Select Save As to save this Connection object.
  123.     12. Type a name for this Connection object (i.e. COM -
  124.         Hayes).
  125.     13. Select Close to return to previous menu.
  126.     14. An option step would be to setup a file transfer and
  127.         telephone network profile.
  128.     15. Select Close to return to previous menu.

  130.  G. Adding a Session Notebook Entry.
  131.  
  132.      1.  Select the Session menu.
  133.      2.  Select the Add menu option.
  134.      3.  Enter a Comment for the session (i.e. AS/400)
  135.      4.  Select the List Box button (arrow) of the Terminal
  136.          Emulation profile selection.
  137.      5.  Scroll down to the IBM 3101 - 20 terminal option and
  138.          highlight the option.
  139.      6.  Select the List Box button (arrow) of the Connection
  140.          Path profile selection.
  141.      7.  Scroll down to the COM - Hayes and highlight the option.
  142.          This is the name of the CONNECTION object you created.
  143.      8.  Select Add.
  144.      9.  Type the complete phone number of where you want to
  145.           dial.
  146.     10.  It is recommended that you select "Display this dialog
  147.          box at connect time".
  148.     11.  Select Save As.
  149.     12.  Type a Session Name (i.e. AS/400 2400 baud)
  150.     13.  Select Save.

  152. PM terminal in now configured.  Try to connect to the AS/400.
  153.  
  154. Note: 1. Recommended change is the buffer definitions size in the
  155.          terminal emulation profile settings.  This can be
  156.          accomplished after connecting to the as/400 by selecting
  157.          the settings option, followed by the Terminal emulation
  158.          option and changing the buffers definition option.

  160.       2. After connecting to the AS/400 and logging on, the
  161.          keyboard might need to be remaped or the function keys
  162.          can be used by holding down the Esc key and pressing the
  163.          appropriate number.
  164.        - Example:  F1 would be Esc and the number 1 key on the
  165.                    keyboard.
