Orchid Video Adapters 10/06/92
ORCHID VIDEO ADAPTERS
---------------------
Orchid Prodesigner II, IIs
If video synch problems exist in an OS/2 full screen session or desktop
but go away temporarily after a DOS full screen session is entered, make
sure that you have executed SVGA ON from a DOS full screen session and
performed a shutdown. Prior to executin g this command, search for a file
\OS2\SVGDATA.PMI. If the file exists, delete it and regenerate it by
executing SVGA ON from a DOS command prompt. If your have a blurred strip
across the desktop or are experiencing other types of video synch
problems, you may try to regenerate the PMI configuration file by deleting
the old PMI file and running the DOS TSR VMODE utility and selecting the
highest resolution /refresh rate mode. in DOS full screen session. After
the mode was successfully set, exit the uti lity and execute SVGA ON and
reboot. SVGDATA.PMI file contains the register information for video
modes supported by your adapter and is used by two drivers: BSVHSVGA.DLL
in OS/2 full screen and by VSVGA.SYS in DOS full screen. Correct video
driver statem ents in the CONFIG.SYS for SVGA support should be as
follows: SET VIO_VGA=DEVICE(BVHVGA, BVHSVGA) DEVICE=x:\OS2\MDOS\VSVGA.SYS
where x is your OS/2 system drive letter.
If video goes out of synch when switching from DOS or WIN-OS2 session to
the desktop, check the ET4000 SVGA chipset on the video adapter and record
the batch number. If the batch is TC6059AF or higher, call the 800
support number back and reactivate you r call with a request to be queued
to OS2FIX queue. Ask for the fix for APAR PJ03677 to be mailed to you.
The fix contains an updated VSVGA.SYS driver.
If you have a blurred strip across the top of the desktop and have your
adapter set for the highest vertical refresh rate, try regenerating the
PMI file as explained above. It is important to run the VMODE utility and
select the highest refresh rate mode prior to running SVGA ON. If you
experience problems with the utility in DOS full screen, you can run both
of the utilities in your native DOS. If regenerating the PMI file did not
help, set the video adapter dip switches 1 and 2 for 60Hz refresh rate.
If you have intermittent video problems using DOS full screen session, set
DOS settings for that icon as follows: HW_ROM_TO_RAM to ON, DOS_RMSIZE to
624. Settings screen can be reached by clicking with the right mouse
button over the icon, selecting "Open settings" and going to the "Session"
page in the notebook.

This adapter is currently not supported in high resolution mode. This
however should not cause installation problems. After the installation is
completed, edit the CONFIG.SYS and change the video related statements
from SVGA to VGA (refer to the General c onsideration section for the
outline of the VGA support).
Orchid Prodesigner+ or Prodesigner VGA
If you get SYS03176 errors when starting a DOS or WIN-OS2 full screen
session, change the following DOS settings for each DOS icon on the
desktop (including WIN-OS2 and migrated DOS programs): HW_ROM_TO_RAM to
ON, DOS_RMSIZE to 624. If the problem doesn't go away, run your CMOS
setup and disable VIDEO_BIOS_SHADOW_ENABLED on your motherboard BIOS. If
that does not solve it, make sure that you have more than 4 MB of memory,
latest revision of the motherboard BIOS and that no other a dapters are
using the same memory address range as your video adapter. If the problem
still persists, call the 800 support line and ask the customer
representative to add your PMR to the interested party list for the APAR
PJ04570.
If there is a problem with enlarged cursors, skewed screen and blurred
areas, make sure that if CONFIG.SYS indicates SVGA support that SVGA ON
from DOS full screen was executed (see the Prodesigner II above). If that
is true and the problems still exist, change the CONFIG.SYS video
statements to indicate VGA support only. Refer to the next page for the
outline of these statements. IBM is not commited to SVGA support for
ET3000 based boards, but will try to correct the reported problems.
General considerations
Our PM desktop device driver supports only 640x480x16 mode (pure VGA).
SVGA support is intended to provide higher resolution modes for DOS and
VIO applications only! Orchid has released PM desktop display drivers
that support higher resolutions. If yo u have downloaded an Orchid driver
and are experiencing problems with it, please contact Orchid technical
support.
You can obtain more information on SVGA support from the README file ( in
INFORMATION folder) . If you're not sure whether the drivers loaded are
for VGA or SVGA support, check the CONFIG.SYS file at the root directory
of the OS/2 drive. CONFIG.SYS VGA support statements should be as
follows:
SET VIO_VGA=DEVICE(BVHVGA)
DEVICE=x:\OS2\MDOS\VVGA.SYS
where x is your OS/2 system drive letter.
If your desktop video is corrupted intermittently, run CHKDSK from an OS/2
command prompt to determine if any hard disk problems exist. If so, boot
OS/2 from the installation disk and press ESC when the first instruction
screen is displayed (you'll see this screen shortly after disk 1 has been
inserted). This will return you to an OS/2 A: command prompt. Run
CHKDSK C: /F to repair any inconsistencies on your drive. Replace C:
with your boot drive letter if yours is different.
Using HPFS on systems with less than 6MB RAM sometimes causes problems
that seem to be video related but are not (blank screen, missing icons,
etc...). You may want to consider a FAT file system for your hard drive
if you experience problems.
You should also check your motherboard BIOS date to determine if you will
need an update. AMI BIOS should be dated no earlier than 4/9/90 although
we recommend using AMI BIOS dated 5/9/91 or later. Phoenix BIOS should be
dated no earlier than 5/11/92 ( they recently corrected a bug that was
causing problems with OS/2).
If your DOS application is using a video mode which is not supported by
our DOS full screen drivers, you may install all DOS video related drivers
and mode utilities in OS/2 CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. You may also
specify DOS video driver DEVICE stateme nt in DOS_DEVICE setting in the
DOS SETTINGS for the desired DOS session.
