  55. The important thing to remember when you are setting up your
  56. system is that only one primary partition can be assessible
  57. (active) on each hard disk at any system startup.  On the other
  58. hand, all the logical drives within the extended partition are
  59. accessible (provided their file system formats are compatible
  60. with the starting operating system).  For example, suppose you
  61. had DOS 5.0 in one primary partition and OS/2 2.1 in another
  62. primary partition.  One of your logical drives is formatted for
  63. FAT and contains a variety of DOS programs.  You could start the
  64. DOS programs from either of the primary partitions.

  67. It is also important to understand what happens to the drive
  68. mapping if you ADD a hard disk AFTER you install OS/2 2.1.  The
  69. logical drives on your existing hard disk will be remapped.

  72. Look at Example #1 above.  Suppose you have this as an existing
  73. hard drive and it is set up as shown.  Then you add a second hard
  74. disk to your system.  The primary partition of that second hard
  75. disk will be assigned D. The logical drives of your first hard
  76. disk will be remapped.  The existing logical drive D becomes E, E
  77. becomes F, and so forth.

  80. See Example #2, because OS2 2.1 is now in the logical drive
  81. assigned a E, all references to the drive letter (for example,
  82. statements in your CONFIG.SYS and INI files) will have to change.
  83. For this reason, it is preferable to place only logical drives on
  84. the hard disk that you are adding.
