OSINDSC - INVALID ARGUMENT COUNT IN .DSC
10/19/94
================================================================
INVALID ARGUMENT COUNT ON IN A CONFIGURATION FILES .DSC
================================================================
Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures
----------------------------------------------------------------
SYMPTOMS:
On a system that has OS/2 2.x running, you can get the
following message panel:
Display Driver Install detected an invalid argument count in
a .DSC files. Check configuration files.
1. Error message while doing a DSPINSTL.
2. Error message while doing a Selective Install for video.
3. Error message while doing an upgrade of OS/2 2.x to new
release or CSD.
Select OK and you see the "Initialization Fails" message, then
the message panel appears again.
NOTE: This problem occurs on a system that previously had
wrong chipset selected at one point.
For example, you had ET4000 but you selected CirrusL
chipset for a video card during Display Install. This
caused one of the .dsc files to be corrupted. So, the
above error occurs during upgrade or Display
PROCEDURE:
1. Press F3 to go to command prompt.
2. Go to the drive where OS/2 resides.
X: and press Enter
X: = drive where OS/2 resides.
3. Change directory to \OS2\INSTALL, type:
CD \OS2\INSTALL and press Enter
4. Delete the *.DSC files, type:
DEL *.DSC and press Enter
5. In Drive A: Insert
-Diskette 2, for salmon label diskettes
-Diskette 1, for green label diskettes
-Diskette 1, 3, and 4 for blue label diskettes
NOTE: For blue labels the next step is required on
all three diskettes.
6. To Unpack the *.DSC files from the diskettes, type:
UNPACK A:BUNDLE and press Enter
7. SETVGA: Setting system back to VGA video mode.
NOTE: The next step is to set your system back to VGA mode.
Please read the ENTIRE contents below.
The following describes 2 ways to bring your system back
to VGA mode, or to bring your system to the desktop if it is
hung with no activity.
When you are installing OS/2 and system hangs near the end,
usually after diskette 17 (BLUE diskettes) or diskette 13
(SALMON, GREEN diskettes), or after being prompted to
restart, it freezes on the logos or on the message "Loading,
Please Wait!"
Method 2, RSPDSPI, MUST be used if you have ONE of the
following:
PS Valuepoint
ATI video card
S-3 chipset
NOTE: S-3 drivers require LDF.COM, that can be downloaded
from BBS. Please check with vendor for latest driver
and any utility necessary for installation.
IF YOU HAVE INSTALLED SERVICEPAK:
XR06200 OR XR06300
After completing Install, you receive a Blank Screen,
return to VGA Mode. When prompted for diskette, use
the ServicePak Diskettes.

METHOD 1: SETVGA
================================================================
NOTE: If you installed your system from a CD-ROM, review
step 5 before beginning.
1. Place Installation Diskette in the drive A: and restart
system. If keyboard is locked up, turn the system off, wait
30 seconds and turn it on again.
2. When prompted insert diskette 1, and press Enter.
3. When Welcome Screen appears, press Esc to cancel installation.
4. At the A:\> prompt:
A. Change to drive on which OS/2 resides.
B. Change Directory to \OS2 directory on your hard disk.
EXAMPLE: CD \OS2 and press Enter
C. Type: DIR *.* > SVGADATA.PMI and press Enter
D. Type: SETVGA X: and press Enter
Where X: is the drive on which OS/2 resides.
5. Once SETVGA.CMD starts, it asks for Display Driver Diskette 1.
If you installed from CD-ROM, it is recommended you create
this diskette. Type:
<cd>:\DISKIMGS\LOADDSKF and press Enter
<cd>:\DISKIMGS\OS2\<size>\DISP1.DSK A: and press Enter.
Where <cd> is the letter of your CD-ROM drive
<size> is size of the diskette
(35 for 3.5" disks, 525 for 5.25" disks).
6. When the process is done, restart the system.
7. Go to an OS/2 Window and type: DSPINSTL and press Enter
To install video adapter and correct resolution for video.
8. SHUTDOWN the system and restart. Do a Selective Install for
your printer and WIN-OS2 support.
NOTE: If above is unsuccessful, check your hard disk for
the following files. If these files are not on your hard
drive, unpack them from Display Driver Diskette 1.
A. IBMVGA32.DLL 42378 4-22-93
B. IBMDEV32.DLL 85326 4-22-93
C. BVHVGA.DLL 40892 4-25-93
D. DISPLAY.DLL 77120 4-29-93
Place the diskette in A: drive and type:
X:\> and press Enter
\OS2\UNPACK A:\VGA and press Enter
X: is where OS/2 resides
9. Use correct diskette for installation method you are using:
3.5 diskettes: BLUE label = diskette 2
SALMON label = diskette 3
GREEN label = diskette 3
5.25 diskettes: = diskette 4
CD-ROM: Files are in a directory
When you have the correct diskette, type the following:
X:\OS2\UNPACK A:\BUNDLE/N:DISPLAY.DLL and press Enter
This places files on your hard disk in \OS2\DLL subdirectory.
10.Use a text editor to check the CONFIG.SYS file on your hard
disk for the following statements:
DEVINFO=SCR,VGA,X:\OS2\VIOTBL.DCP
SET VIDEO_DEVICES=VIO_VGA
SET VIO_VGA=DEVICE(BVHVGA)
DEVICE=X:\OS2\MDOS\VVGA.SYS
================================================================
METHOD 2: RSPDSPI
================================================================
Use this procedure instead of the SETVGA command, if you need to
return to VGA mode. Follow procedure after starting OS/2 from
the Installation Diskette and pressing Esc to go to the command
prompt.

press Enter after each one:
X:
CD X:\OS2\INSTALL
RSPDSPI /PK:VGA
/SK:NONE/S:E:\OS2SE21\/T:
X: where: E: is CD-ROM or LAN drive
B: If RSPDSPI.EXE is NOT in \OS2\INSTALL\ directory.
1.Unpack RSPDSPI.EXE with the following command
and press Enter:

You may try to configure for SVGA. You must contact the vendor
of video card to ensure you have the correct, latest drivers, and
resolution you are installing is supported in OS/2. If you have
a utility or a set-up program for your video you need to follow
instructions for that program first.
The instructions for changing your video to SVGA are in "Using
the Operating System ".
