  3. OS2DESK.FAX                   DESKTOP PROBLEMS AFTER INSTALLING

  8. ~~SYMPTON:  For the Blank Desktop, after installing 2.1, WPS
  9.             (Work Place Shell) cannot be located, USER INI or
  10.             hard disk may be corrupted...
  11.

  14. ~~WORKAROUND: Run CHKDSK
  15.               Recreate the INI files
  16.               Delete the Desktop directory and subdirectories
  17.

  20. For Work Place Shell (WPS) Cannot be Located:
  21.  
  22. This procedure has been proven to be very effective for
  23. "Desktop Cannot be Located" when not associated with a trap.
  24. To get to a command prompt from floppies:
  25.  
  26.     1) Perform shutdown, if you're unable to shutdown, turn off
  27.        system for 30 seconds, put Installation Disk in drive A:
  28.  
  29.     2) Turn on computer, or press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart system.
  30.  
  31.     3) When prompted, remove Installation Disk and insert Disk 1.
  32.  
  33.     4) Press ENTER..
  34.  
  35.     5) When the WELCOME SCREEN is displayed, press ESC, to
  36.        display command prompt ( A:  )
  37.  
  38.     6) At the A:>  put in Diskette #2 for CHKDSK command
  39.  
  40.        If you installed from CD, you will be dropped off at CD
  41.        drive in DISK_1 subdirectory, change to DISK_2 subdir.

  43.                   X:\OS2SE21\DISK_2
  44.                (X: is the CD ROM drive)

  46.     7) Run CHKDSK until clean. Command is:
  47.  
  48.             CHKDSK X:  /F              (for FAT)
  49.             CHKDSK X:  /F:2            (for HPFS)
  50.  
  51.          where X:  is the drive on which OS/2 resides.
  52.  
  53.    If crosslinked files, copy files that are crosslinked from
  54.    harddrive to floppy, delete from harddrive, and copy from
  55.    floppy back to harddrive.
  56.  
  57.     8) Switch to OS2 subdirectory, type:
  58.  
  59.             CD \OS2  <enter>
  60.             DEL OS2.INI  <enter>
  61.             DEL OS2SYS.INI  <enter>
  62.  
  63.         If you get "Access Denied" type:
  64.             ATTRIB OS2*.INI -R
  65.           (Now you can delete the files)
  66.  
  67.     9) Copy OS2.INI and OS2SYS.INI from your OS2\INSTALL
  68.         subdirectory to your OS2 subdirectory.
  69.  
  70.    10) From your OS2 subdirectory:  Type the following:
  71.  
  72.              MAKEINI OS2.INI INI.RC <enter>
  73.              MAKEINI OS2SYS.INI INISYS.RC <enter>
  74.  
  75.    11) Change back to your root directory.  Delete entire
  76.         DESKTOP directory structure, including DESKTOP directory
  77.         itself (if you have more than one desktop directory,
  78.         do the same for those).  If system is formatted HPFS
  79.         include directory names with spaces in them in
  80.         double quotes.  Before you can remove a directory, it
  81.         must have no files under it.  You cannot be in directory
  82.         itself when you go to remove it.

  84.    12) From your root directory:  Type the following:
  85.  
  86.             ATTRIB WP?ROOT.?SF -H -R -S <enter>
  87.             DEL WP?ROOT.?SF  <enter>
  88.  
  89.    13) Remove diskette from floppy drive and REBOOT!!
  90.  
  91. NOTE:  If desktop does NOT come up, follow steps 8 through 10,
  92.        TWICE and reboot.

  95.        If you are still unable to get the desktop, you will
  96.        need to call OS/2 Technical Support and request the fix:
