INSTALLING THE MS-DOS 6 UPGRADE 7/18/94
FILE: OSDADOS6.FAX - 5/12/94
TITLE: 950512 INSTALLING THE MS-DOS 6 UPGRADE
PACKAGE TO CO-EXIST WITH OS/2 2.x
DESCRIPTION OF SYMPTONS:
You are running a previous version of DOS on your
machine and you are using either a Dual Boot or
Boot Manager configuration.
DETAIL OF RESOLUTION:
INITIAL INSTALL
A. Start your computer by booting into the current version of DOS
installed on your system, but not from an OS/2 VDM or VMB.
B. PREPARE THE UNINSTALL DISKETTE
The purpose of the Uninstall diskette is to safeguard the files
on your computer while you are installing MS-DOS 6. The
Uninstall diskette(s) protects the files if SETUP cannot finish
installing, or if you encounter problems with MS-DOS 6 after
SETUP. You can restore your previous version of DOS if you
need to.
1. Write "Uninstall #1" on the label of one newly formatted
floppy diskette that is compatible with drive A.
(If you are using 360K diskettes, you might need two floppy
diskettes. Label the second "Uninstall #2".)
C. DISABLE DISK-CACHING, DELETE-PROTECTION, AND ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAMS
Some disk-caching, delete-protection, and anti-virus programs
conflict with SETUP. You do not need to disable the startup
command for the MS-DOS SMARTDrive program.
1. EDIT the DOS Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files. Type REM
and a space at the beginning of each command line that
starts a disk-caching, delete-protection, or anti-virus
program. Save these files.
D. DISABLE AUTOMATIC MESSAGE SERVICES
1. Disable any automatic message service, such as a network
popup or a printing notification, that prints directly
to your screen. These message services are incompatible
with SETUP.
2. Save your changes to the config.sys and autoexec.bat files.
3. Restart your computer by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL. Then run
SETUP (see RUNNING SETUP). After you set up MS-DOS 6,
EDIT the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files by deleting
the REM command(s) that you added.
RUNNING SETUP
A. OS/2 DUAL BOOT
1. Start your computer by booting into the current version
of DOS installed on your system, but not from an OS/2
VDM or VMB.
2. Insert MS-DOS 6 SETUP Diskette 1 in drive A or B.
3. Type: A:SETUP or B:SETUP from the DOS C:> command prompt.
4. MS-DOS 6 finds non MS-DOS operating system files (OS/2) on
the drive and prompts you to remove the files from the
hard drive. If you choose to remove the files, MS-DOS 6
will re-partition the entire first hard drive as one MS-DOS
partition, removing OS/2 from the system.
Choose - "DO NOT REMOVE THE FILES".
5. MS-DOS will warn you that the "Operating system on the
drive (OS/2) may be disabled". You may ignore this message.
Choose - "CONTINUE SETUP".
6. Follow the instructions on your screen. If you have
questions about any of the procedures or options you
encounter during setup, press F1 for Help.
7. When SETUP prompts you for the Uninstall diskette(s),
insert the diskette(s) in drive A. You must use drive A
because SETUP copies files to the Uninstall diskette(s)
that MS-DOS needs to computer.
9. Reboot your system once you have completed the SETUP
program. You should come up in MS-DOS 6. To go to the OS/2
partition type: "BOOT /OS2". Everything should work fine.
10. Copy onto the C:\ root directory the "Command.com" from the
C:\DOS directory. This will allow you to boot back to DOS
once you are in OS/2.
---------------------------
NOTE: SETUP places your previous DOS files in a directory
named OLD_DOS.x. If you are sure you do not want to restore
your previous version of DOS, you can delete the OLD_DOS.x
directory and its contents by typing DELOLDOS at the
command prompt.
B. OS/2 BOOT MANAGER
1. Start your computer by booting into your current
version of DOS installed on your system, but not
from an OS/2 VDM or VMB.
2. Insert MS-DOS 6 SETUP Diskette 1 in drive A or B.
3. Type: A:SETUP or B:SETUP from the DOS prompt.
(Do not install directly from A or B).
4. MS-DOS 6 will detect a non MS-DOS partition and states that
"This partition will not be available when using MS-DOS 6".
You may ignore this message. Choose - CONTINUE SETUP.
6. Follow the instructions on your screen. If you have
questions about any of the procedures or options you
encounter during SETUP, press F1 for Help.
7. When SETUP prompts you for the Uninstall diskette(s),
insert the diskette(s) in drive A. You must use drive A
because SETUP copies files to the Uninstall diskette(s)
that MS-DOS needs to start your computer.
---------------------------
NOTE: SETUP places your previous DOS files in a directory
named OLD_DOS.x. If you are sure you do not want to restore
your previous version of DOS, you can delete the OLD_DOS.x
directory and its contents by typing DELOLDOS at the command
prompt.
8. TO MAKE THE OS/2 BOOT MANAGER PARTITION *** ACTIVE *** AGAIN
a. Type FDISK at the MS-DOS 6 C:> command prompt.
The FDISK OPTION screen appears.
b. Choose 2, and then press ENTER.
The Set Active Partition screen appears.
The Boot Manager partition appears as a
1-MB non-MS-DOS partition.
c. Choose the number that corresponds with the Boot
Manager partition, and then press Enter.
d. When the confirmation screen appears, press ESC.
The Fdisk Options screen appears.
e. Press ESC to exit FDISK.
f. Restart your computer, your Boot Manager
should be active.
WARNING !!!!!!
***************************
At the end of the installation process it is suggested by the
Microsoft's DOS 6.0 installation program that you run the
"Microsoft DEFRAG", and the "Microsoft DOUBLE SPACE" utilities.
These utilities are NOT COMPATIBLE with the OS/2 environment,
and may cause data loss in OS/2 if executed on partitions
accessible by OS/2 while running in the Microsoft DOS 6.0
environment. Microsoft DOS 6.0 utilities that perform
direct diskette I/O (eg. Interlink, undelete) are NOT SUPPORTED
under OS/2. These utilities compromise OS/2's filesystem.
***************************
-------------
If you have followed all the above steps and you are still having
having an installation problem with MS-DOS 6, but not with
OS/2, please contact the Microsoft Corporation Technical
Support Center.
