  3. OS2CHKDS.FAX                    HOW TO RUN CHKDSK FOR FAT & HPFS

  9. It is recommended to run CHKDSK on a regular basis as a
  10. "maintenance" process and most effective when run from floppies.
  11.  
  12.  
  13. You will not want to interfer with the SWAPPER.  The CHKDSK
  14. command should NOT be issued when OS/2 has been booted from the
  15. hard drive, because the SWAPPER.DAT file is in a constant state
  16. of change, and CHKDSK may show misleading results.  CHKDSK
  17. procedure may require several passes, because CHKDSK first
  18. cleans up primary structures and then secondary structures.

  23. To run CHKDSK:

  26. 1) Perform shutdown, if you're unable to shutdown, turn off
  27.    system for 30 seconds, put Installation Disk in drive A:
  28.  
  29. 2) Turn on computer, or press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart system.
  30.  
  31. 3) When prompted, remove Installation Disk and insert Disk 1.
  32.  
  33. 4) Press ENTER..
  34.  
  35. 5) When the WELCOME SCREEN is displayed, press ESC, to display
  36.    command prompt ( A:  )
  37.  
  38. 6) Remove Disk 1 and insert Disk 2 (contains CHKDSK command)
  39.  
  40. 7) To correct errors on hard drive, type appropriate CHKDSK
  41.    command followed by the drive on  which OS/2 resides.

  43.         (X:  denotes drive where OS/2 resides...C:, D:, etc.)

  45. ~~~~If your drive is formatted for FAT file system, type:
  46.  
  47.                CHKDSK X:  /F
  48.  
  49. ~~~~If your drive is formatted for HPFS file system, type:
  50.  
  51.                CHKDSK X:  /F:2
  52.  
  53.     If you installed from CD, you will be dropped off at CD
  54.     drive in DISK_1 subdirectory, change to DISK_2 subdir.

  56.                   X:\OS2SE21\DISK_2
  57.                (X: is the CD ROM drive)

  59. 8) Press ENTER and the CHKDSK command will start.
  60.

  62. ~~~~If you have any error/s, you will need to run the CHKDSK
  63.     command repeatedly until ALL errors are cleared up.
  64.

  66. NOTE:  After you run CHKDSK repeatedly, and IF you are getting
  67.        the same error/s, and they are not being fixed or
  68.        corrected, remove the diskette, press, and hold
  69.        CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart system.
