  3. TITLE:  GENERAL CONSIDERATION WHEN HANDLING DISPLAY PROBLEMS.
  4.  
  5. DESCRIPTION OF SYMPTOMS:
  6.  
  7. Intermittent desktop corruption or hangs when a folder repaints.
  8.        This could either be happening in vga or svga.
  9.  
  10. SUMMARY OF RESOLUTION:
  11.  
  12. See if the problem occurs in vga resolution, run CHKDSK, and
  13.        check for hardware conflicts.  Also be sure the INI files
  14.        are not corrupt and their is plenty of free space in the
  15.        swapper.dat file.
  16.  
  17. DETAILS OF RESOLUTION:
  18.  
  19. 1.  Note which video mode you are in.  If you are in svga set the
  20.        system back to vga using the "RSPDSPI" command.  See if the
  21.        problem occurs in vga.  If it does not then it is more than
  22.        likely a problem w/ video.  If not then continue.
  23. 2.  Boot from the OS2 bootable floppies and get the A: command
  24.        prompt.  DO NOT TRY TO ACCESS THE OS2 DRIVE.
  25. 3.  Insert diskette #2 into drive A and run "CHKDSK x: /f" for FAT
  26.        and "CHKDSK x: /f:2" for HPFS.  A corrupted hardfile will
  27.        cause hangs like this and CHKDSK will repair the drive.
  28. 4.  Reboot.
  29. 5.  Open an OS2 session and change to the os2\system directory and
  30.        check the swapper.dat file.  Make sure there at least 5 or
  31.        10 megs of freespace(15 is a good recommendation).  If the
  32.        file does not have much freespace left you will have to
  33.        make so room on the partition or move the file to a
  34.        different place on the drive.
  35. 6.  Check the system BIOS and make sure it is at its
  36.        latest revision.  AMI BIOS should be dated no earlier than
  37.        5/9/91(this is what we recommend).  PHOENIX BIOS should be
  38.        dated no earlier than 5/11/92.
  39. 7.  Be sure the INI files are not corrupt.  Follow the
  40.        instructions on page 435 of the users guide(OS2 2.1).
  41.        Before you delete the OS2.INI and the os2sys.ini file back
  42.        up by renaming them.  For example:
