9595 ECA001 2/25/94
9595 ECA001 Details (Version 1.0)
50MHz Processor
ECA 001
Overview:
---------
ECA is an IBM acronym for the term, "Engineering Change Announcement." The
Engineering Change Announcement is used by IBM to notify our authorized
servicers of important improvements in function or reliability.
In this case, an engineering change to the 50MHz Enhanced Processor card
was required to correct an exposure to undetected data modification or data
loss. The opportunity for an actual failure of this type is limited to
situations of very intense activity by a high-performance busmaster adapter,
such as the IBM LANStreamer or EtherStreamer adapter. The probability of a
failure, even with a busmaster adapter, is extremely low.
Does your system require ECA001?
--------------------------------
The affected 50MHz Enhanced Processor cards eligible for ECA001 were
manufactured prior to 10/22/93, and were shipped in the following PS/2
systems:
8595 Models 0MF and 0MT
9595 Models 0MF, 0MG, and 0MT
In addition, these processor cards were available as an Upgrade Option
for earlier models of the 8590, 8595, 9590, and 9595.
The Machine Type and Model is identified on a small label on the front
panel of the system, just above the top diskette drive. It is printed
in a "system-model" format. (for example: "Type 9595-0MG")
- If you do not have one of the above 8595 or 9595 models, and have not
installed a 50MHz Enhanced Processor Upgrade Option in your system,
then you do not require processor replacement.
- If you do have one of the above models, or have installed the option
in your system, you probably require processor replacement ECA001.
To positively identify that you do - or do not - require ECA001, the system
unit cover must be removed and the processor card inspected. Affected 50MHZ
Enhanced Processor cards will have "FRU P/N 57F1597" in white characters
along the long edge of the card. The FRU number is on the side of the card
facing down, toward the bottom of the system; therefore, it may be necessary
to remove the processor card to view the FRU number. Any other FRU number
indicates the processor is not affected. If you suspect your machine is
eligible for ECA001 based on the Model number or processor upgrade, your
authorized servicer can perform this inspection.
How to get ECA001 installed on your system:
-------------------------------------------
If you believe your system may be eligible for processor replacement, you
should contact your IBM Authorized Servicer. You may choose to call IBM
Service at 1-800-IBM-SERV, or any local IBM Authorized dealer. When you
call, indicate that you would like to place a service call, and that you
have a system requiring processor replacement under 9595 ECA001. Scheduling
the repair should be done when speaking to the Dealer technician or IBM
Customer Engineer. Customers are not charged for installation of this ECA.
If you have additional questions, you may contact the IBM PC Company
HelpCenter at 800-772-2227, or speak to your IBM Authorized Service provider.
