INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Do NOT install the S-3, OS/2 2.1 display driver on earlier
versions of OS/2.
The OS/2 ATTRIB command is used during installation. If you
chose not to install the OS/2 System Utilities or you have
deleted the ATTRIB command, you must use Selective Install to
restore it before continuing.
To install the S-3 display driver:
1. Insert a diskette into drive A (or another diskette drive).
2. Open an OS/2 full-screen or window session.
3. At the OS/2 command prompt, type the following command:
A&colon.S3INST A: C: and press Enter
where: A: is the diskette drive
C: is the startup drive where OS/2 2.1 resides
This command will copy all necessary files to OS/2 drive.
4. Perform a SHUTDOWN and restart the system.
================================================================
NOTE: For PREINSTALLED systems only, omit steps 5-8 and
do the following:
A. Open the Preinstalled Essentials folder.
B. Open the Configurations Tools folder.
C. Open the Configure Preinstalled System object.
D. Change the display setting to SVGA mode.
E. Perform a SHUTDOWN and restart the system.
F. Open the OS/2 System folder.
G. Open the System Setup folder.
H. Open the System object. Select the desired screen
resolution on the Screen page of the System Settings
notebook, and then close the notebook.
I. Perform a SHUTDOWN and restart the system.
This completes S-3 driver installation for preinstalled systems.
================================================================
5. Open an OS/2 full-screen or window session.
6. Run Display Driver Installation (DSPINSTL) utility program.
When Display Driver Install window appears, S-3 should be the
default choice. (To confirm default, check Primary Display
box, select OK. This displays a pop-up window with choices
for Super Video Graphics Array. S-3 should be highlighted.)
Select OK. You are prompted to insert source directory
(installation diskette). Insert diskette and select OK.
After a moment, you are asked to accept preselected Install
Using Defaults option or to select the Install Using Display
Adapter Utility Program option.
DSPINSTL determines hardware configuration by creating the
SVGADATA.PMI file on startup drive where the OS/2 directory is
located. If file is not created, adapter is currently
incompatible.
7. When DSPINSTL has completed, open OS/2 System folder, open
System Setup folder, and open System object. The Screen
page of the Settings notebook lists supported resolutions
for your configuration. Select one and close notebook.
8. Perform a SHUTDOWN and restart the system.

KNOWN PROBLEMS:
- DOS SESSIONS MAY SHRINK TO 1/3 ORIGINAL SIZE.
RESOLUTIONS:
Edit the CONFIG.SYS file to reflect the following change:
(where X: is your OS/2 system drive letter)
SET VIO_VGA=DEVICE(BVHVGA, BVHSVGA)
DEVICE=x:\OS2\MDOS\VSVGA.SYS
to
SET VIO_VGA=DEVICE(BVHVGA)
DEVICE=x:\OS2\MDOS\VVGA.SYS
- AFTER INSTALLING S-3 SVGA, THE SYSTEM DISPLAYS A BLACK
SCREEN WITH BLINKING CURSOR IN UPPER LEFT CORNER.
SYMPTOMS:
1. There is a hardware conflict. Two or more devices are
sharing the same IRQ, I/O address, and/or DMA parameters.
2. The latest drivers are NOT being used or another vender's
drivers are in use and are currently incompatible.
3. An incompatible video mode is installed.
RESOLUTION:
1. Make sure there are no hardware conflicts between video
adapter and other devices.
2. Make sure you are using the most recent and correct S-3
driver.
PROCEDURES:
1. Start the system from the A: drive and go to the command
prompt using the OS2 diskettes.
2. Run RSPDSPI to set the system back to VGA.
3. Restart the system. The desktop appears.
4. Make sure that none of the devices share the IRQ,
DMA, or I/O address parameters. Video devices usually use
IRQ 2/9 and I/0 address 02E8. Token ring adapters and
Network cards often use these same parameters. Parameters
can vary from system to system.
5. Make sure you have the latest version OS2 drivers for
installation. If the ServicePak or a release containing
the S-3 drivers is installed, you must use the drivers that
came with them.
6. Reinstall the S-3 drivers using the DSPINSTL command.
7. Restart your system.
- DS600 VIDEO BOARDS BY INFOTEL IS CURRENTLY INCOMPATIBLE WITH
THE IBM S-3 DRIVERS
SYMPTOMS:
After installing the IBM S-3 drivers you cannot open seamless
WINOS2 sessions, DOS window sessions, and there is no
winos2 background processing.
RESOLUTION:
The board is only supported in VGA, therefore it is highly
recommended to only run in VGA mode. You can contact the
vender for drivers available in OS/2, but drivers are
currently incompatible because it uses an external clock
architecture like the STB Powergraph. The DS600 is actually
a STB Powergragh board under a different name and uses
S3-928 chipset.
- S-3 CONSIDERATIONS AFTER INSTALLING XR06200
SYMPTOMS:
1. After installing XR06200 and setting the system to run in
SVGA mode, desktop displays a gray desktop, the scroll bars
and icons are black. Edit the SVGADATA.PMI file.
2. If you are using the 256 color mode, and the desktop
appears to be darker than other color modes, edit the
SVGADATA.PMI file located in the \OS2 directory.
RESOLUTION:
1. If system is not useable: Bring system to VGA mode, by
following instructions for RSPDSPI.
If desktop is useable: Go to step 3.
2. Install SVGA support with DSPINSTL. Do NOT restart system.
3. Open an OS/2 Session.
4. Go to the OS2 subdirectory, type:
X: and press Enter
(X: drive where OS/2 resides)
X:CD\OS2 and press Enter
5. Edit the SVGADATA.PMI file. Type:
E SVGADATA.PMI and press Enter
6. Scroll to the section called [Cleanup]
7. Change the following statement from:
HI-COLOR DAC by ....
to:
HI-COLOR DAC by unknown
8. Save the file.
9. SHUTDOWN and restart system to make the changes effective.
- S3 FUNCTIONAL RESTRICTIONS
After Dark for Windows images that move from left to right
do not perform properly at 640x480x16M resolution.
To avoid a General Protection fault while loading Ventura
Publisher for Windows, make sure it is in one of the 256 color
resolutions.
To avoid a trap in Lotus 1-2-3 for OS/2, do not run the program
at 16.7 million colors.
WordPerfect 5.1 and 5.2 for Windows produce a general protection
fault when the "Print Preview" option is selected while using
800x600x64K or 600x480x16 million color mode.
You receive satisfactory results using the software motion
video feature of MMPM/2 should in 256-color mode. In 64k-color
mode, you may see unusual MMPMCS results. The software motion
video feature is currently incompatible in 16 million color
mode. The software motion video feature takes advantage
of a 1MB aperture on video adapters and systems where it is
available to improve the performance of video playback in 64k
color modes. For systems with non-standard locations, the actual
physical address of the aperture must be provided in the
following CONFIG.SYS statement:
SET VIDEO_APERTURE=xxxh
Where xxx is a hexadecimal value in units of 1MB, representing
the actual physical address to map to the aperture. For
example, the IBM PS/ValuePoint Systems must have the statement:
SET VIDEO_APERTURE=400h
To use a physical address at 1GB.
