README for Count 2.5 for OS/2
-----------------------------
Count provides a combination web page hit counter, clock, and date cgi program
for your web server. Use your favorite web browser to visit
http://www.fccc.edu/users/muquit/Count.html for a complete list of features.
Quick install :
Simply use Info-ZIP's unzip.exe 5.31 or any other equivalent unzip utility that
preserves directories to extract the contents of the archive directly into your
cgi-bin directory. Edit WCOUNT\CONF\COUNT.CFG. Visit
http://www.fccc.edu/users/muquit/Count.html to learn about imbedding your new
counter in your web pages. Get around to deleting and/or moving the files
README, README.OS2, EXTDGTS.EXE, MKSTRIP.EXE, and WCOUNT\DATA\SAMPLE.DAT as
noted below when you feel like it.
Normal install :
**Note** : Unlike 2.3 and 2.4 I have chosen to strip the distribution file for
2.5 down to just the bare minimum required to make use of the
counter. As such I have removed any files from WCOUNT\DIGITS that
were not digit strips, removed the DOCS directory, and not included
the OS/2 source code changes. None of these changes affect the
operation of the software and they allow the distribution to be less
than 25% of its previous size. The latest documentation is always
available at http://www.fccc.edu/users/muquit/Count.html
1. Copy the executable file COUNT.EXE to your cgi-bin directory.
2. Copy the directory WCOUNT and its subdirectories to your cgi-bin directory.
You should not change the name or location of this directory.
3. Edit the small commented text file WCOUNT\CONF\COUNT.CFG as appropriate for
your site. Use your favorite web browser to read the documentation at
http://www.fccc.edu/users/muquit/Count.html if you need help understanding
what some of the configuration options mean.
4. Add the counter to your web pages and begin using them. Again refer to
http://www.fccc.edu/users/muquit/Count.html for complete descriptions of the
various options and numerous examples. You should use count.exe in your
HTML files rather than count.cgi.
5. Visit Digit Mania at http://www.digitmania.holowww.com/ to download hundreds
of different typestyles for you to use with your new counter.
6. Move the executable files EXTDGTS.EXE and MKSTRIP.EXE to a convenient
location for future use. These utilities are not required for COUNT.EXE to
operate so they should not be in your cgi-bin directory. A good place to
put them is with any other utilities you use to maintain your web server.
7. Delete WCOUNT\DATA\SAMPLE.DAT when you are done with it.
For example:
You should have directories similar to
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\conf
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\data
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\digits
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\logs
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\digits\A
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\digits\B
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\digits\bang
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\digits\C
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\digits\cd
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\digits\cdd
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\digits\cdr
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\digits\D
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\digits\E
and files similar to
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\count.exe
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\copyright
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\rgb.txt
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\conf\count.cfg
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\data\sample.dat
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\digits\A\strip.gif
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\digits\B\strip.gif
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\digits\bang\strip.gif
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\digits\C\strip.gif
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\digits\cd\strip.gif
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\digits\cdd\strip.gif
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\digits\cdr\strip.gif
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\digits\D\strip.gif
D:\TCPIP\WWW\CGI-BIN\wcount\digits\E\strip.gif
Upgrading from 2.3 or 2.4 :
Upgrading 2.3 or 2.4 to 2.5 is not quite seamless because the format of the
WCOUNT\CONF\COUNT.CFG file is completely new in version 2.5. As such you must
completely rewrite your WCOUNT\CONF\COUNT.CFG using the new format. The new
format is much simpler than before so this should be straight forward.
Upgrading from 2.2 :
If you have version 2.2 or earlier for OS/2 installed you should delete the
old version before installing this version using the instructions above. You
can keep your old data files. You can also keep your fonts however you must
either use MKSTRIP.EXE to turn the individual digit files into a single strip,
or you must modify your HTML code to include the ISTRIP=F option. Refer to
http://www.fccc.edu/users/muquit/Count.html for information about using
MKSTRIP.EXE and/or ISTRIP=.
Using the package:
Refer to http://www.fccc.edu/users/muquit/Count.htm for complete descriptions
of the various options and numerous examples, plus the latest version of the
documentation and other news.
Over time your WCOUNT\DATA directory will contain many data files. You should
clean this directory out regularly so that old unused counter data does not
accumulate.
Read and clear out the WCOUNT\LOGS\COUNT25.LOG file regularly.
Add to your WCOUNT\DIGITS directory, and maintain an HTML page that displays
all your typestyles. I eventually resorted to writing a REXX program that
indexed my collection of several hundred typestyles.
The source code:
The executable files included were compiled using EMX 0.9d and staticly bound.
They do not require that you have installed the EMX 0.9d runtime support .DLLs.
It took significantly more time to write this readme file than it did to
recompile the code for OS/2. This can hardly be called a port since there were
essentially no changes required to compile the original source code for the
OS/2 environment.
SRC_OS2.ZIP has been removed from the distribution of 2.5. You will need to
download the original source archive from
http://www.fccc.edu/users/muquit/Count.html if you plan to build your own
version of the code. It requires nothing more than some make files to port the
code, but e-mail me if you would like mine (for EMX 0.9d and NMAKE 3.06).
The result is a clean compile with no changes to the original source code and
a stable resulting .exe.
Before anybody asks... the WCOUNT directory is a hardcoded name because I did
not want to spend the time required to add a configureable directory name to
the original UNIX source code. Ignoring the time to setup and figure out the
makefiles for EMX, the entire port took only a few minutes, so I am not about
to spend hours reading the source code in order to figure out and remove a
minor inconvenience. The support for a configureable directory in the 2.2
release does not exist in my releases of 2.3-2.5 (and did not work properly in
2.2 for that matter).
Compatibility and support:
I no longer run a personal web server so I am unable to personally test the
code on a real server. Versions up to 2.4 were tested on my own server (IBM
Internet Connection Server 4.1 for OS/2). All versions have had very basic
testing on my development machine (straight from command line). This port
should work with goserve or any other OS/2 web server, but I leave it to the
users and newsgroups to figure out which combinations work and which do not.
In a suitable EMX or RSX environment this executable should run under a DOS web
server as well if such a beast exists.
Please review http://www.fccc.edu/users/muquit/Count.html and the various
appropriate newsgroups before contacting me for assistance. When time allows
I will try to respond to e-mail questions.
