URL SCANNER 1.5
Please forgive the minimal documentation. Writing to humans isn't quite my
bag...
What is US?
-----------
US is a URL scanner that will process a list of URL's, notifying you if any of
the list has been updated since the last scan. A real nice way to keep an eye
on your favorite URL, without the need of actually visiting it with a
browser...
How do I use US?
----------------
Easy! Stick the files into a directory that you want to run it from. Go to
the desktop and tear off a copy of the program template and create a US object
from it. Double click on the object and it's running. US will default to my
webpage for it's first run (no URL list yet). Drag the mouse ove the various
buttons and read the tips provided. Then... USE IT! <G>
Are there any bugs I should be aware of?
----------------------------------------
Of course! But not with my program! <G> Actually, not all URL's are the same.
US knows when a URL has been updated by asking the server for the header
information of your desired URL and comparing it to the list that it keeps. If
the dates are the same for the header and what's in the list then US declares,
"NO CHANGE". However, if the dates are different or if this is the first time
it's is run, then US will declare, "CHANGED".
Sometimes, some servers update the headers on a second-by-second, thus US will
constantly show "CHANGED" when in fact nothing has been updated. Sorry, there's
no fix for this at present. Also, some servers refuse to give complete header
information and you'll get a "SERVER CONNECTED, BUT NO HEADER" response. In this
case, there is nothing I can do for you. Try altering the URL just a tad...
Like adding a "/" to the end of the URL will sometimes allow US to get a
complete header to process...
Then there's those REAL NASTY URL's that will cause the TCPIP stack to crash.
I've seen the a couple of times on two different URL's and it's a puzzle to me.
I'll make changes to the US code is possible (not my fault really) and post it
in a future update...
What do I need to run US?
-------------------------
OS/2 3.0 or greater, REXX, RXSOCK, TCP/IP and an active connection to your ISP.
What is BIMPORT.CMD?
--------------------
BIMPORT.CMD is a rexx script that will read the NetScape BOOKMARK.HTM file and
generate a US compatible URL.LST file. This way, US can be up and scanning your
favorite URL's in no time at all...
To use it, copy the BOOKMARK.HTM file in your NetScape directory to the
directory where you run US from and then run BIMPORT.CMD. Once run, there
should be a URL.LST file in that directory. Now, from the desktop, just double
click on the US object and US will now be using your URL's...
HOW DO I REGISTER MY COPY OF US?
--------------------------------
Great question. Mail me $5.00 (US) and I'll send you a registered copy via
email.
