  28. 1. Introduction
  29. ---------------

  31. UltiMail/2 Lite is supplied as part of the Internet Access Kit (IAK)
  32. accompanying the new OS/2 Warp 3.  UltiMail/2 Lite is described and
  33. configured by IBM as a mail client using the Post Office Protocol (POP) to
  34. exchange mail with a designated server machine.  Some Internet access
  35. provides offer POP servers, but some do not and assume that your site is
  36. capable of using the standard SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) services.
  37.  
  38. Many Internet access providers prefer to deliver mail to subscribers
  39. using the standard SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) services rather
  40. than POP - a notable example is Demon Internet Services in the UK (20,000
  41. subscribers in January 1995 and rising at 10% a month).  The provider
  42. benefits from using SMTP rather than POP because he doesn't need to
  43. provide a permanent mailbox account for each subscriber.

  45. This small kit describes how to set up your Warp/IAK system to use
  46. UltiMail/2 Lite as your mail package and exchange mail with the outside
  47. world using SMTP rather than POP.  The instructions are by no means
  48. comprehensive and they are probably unclear in places so please feed back
  49. any constructive suggestions (including typos) to improve this kit.  All
  50. of the information in this guide has been gleaned from books, examination
  51. of binary files etc.  There's nothing in here that could possibly be
  52. construed as official IBM information.

  56. 2. Warning
  57. ----------
  58.  
  59. The standard Warp/IAK setup assumes that you will be using POP to
  60. exchange your e-mail with Advantis.  If you're not sure that you need to
  61. use SMTP, please check whether your provider supports POP before acting
  62. on the recommendations in this kit.  IBM will certainly tell you that
  63. using Warp/IAK with SMTP is unsupported, but if you need SMTP support,
  64. you have little/no choice.
  65.     
  66. If you're an Advantis customer, you use POP and don't need this kit for
  67. your Advantis connection.
  68.  
  69. If you're a Demon Internet customer, you will need this kit unless you
  70. have paid up for the POP delivery service - it's an extra UKP 180 a year
  71. so you'll know :-)

  75. 3. Assumptions
  76. --------------
  77.  
  78. Throughout this document I have assumed that the IAK software has been
  79. installed under the C:\TCPIP directory.  If you have not installed it in
  80. this directory, you will need to adjust the examples quoting path
  81. specifications to suit your system setup.  Two UltiMail/2 specific files
  82. containing path specifications are
  83.  
  84.     umail.pro
  85.     umailsrv.pro
  86.  
  87. so please check them carefully if your setup isn't installed in the
  88. default location.
  89.  
  90. I have also assumed that you have acquired and installed the latest fixes
  91. to UltiMail/2.  At the time of writing, the latest fix was described by
  92. IBM thus:
  93.  
  94.     Ultimedia Mail/2 Lite fixes (last updated February 2, 1995)
  95.     -----------------------------------------------------------
  96.  
  97.     This package provides fixes to several problems in Ultimail.  A paste
  98.     of large volumes of text into the text editor from the clipboard
  99.     would trap.  Second, if the POP server were to drop the session
  100.     during mail retrieval, the Ultimail inbasket would hang.  Third, mail
  101.     sending would fail under certain circumstances, for example if your
  102.     Internet provider name server did not have a host name for your IP
  103.     address.  These problems are fixed with this package.
  104.

  112. Do *NOT* install this new version of sendmail (1.3.10) - keep the
  113. original version (1.3.6).  It appears to be safe to install the 3 DLL
  114. files.
  115.  
  116. Also, the sendmail.exe provided with IBM TCP/IP v2.0 does not work with
  117. UltiMail/2 Lite.
  118.  
  119. It's available by starting the "Retrieve Software Updates" object or by
  120. issuing the command "gopher updates.gopher.ibm.com 77".

  124. 4. Starting UltiMail/2 Lite
  125. ---------------------------
  126.  
  127. The standard installation of the IAK creates an "Ultimedia Mail/2 'Lite'"
  128. folder containing objects like "In-basket", "Mail Cabinet".  They are not
  129. program objects with customisable setting and launching UltiMail/2 from
  130. them gives you no scope to adjust UltiMail/2's behaviour.
  131.  
  132. If you wish to change the default startup behaviour of UltiMail/2, you'll
  133. find it more convenient to create a program object with these parameters:
  134.  
  135.     Path and file name:     C:\TCPIP\UMAIL\UMAIL.EXE
  136.     Parameters:             /PRO=UMAIL.PRO
  137.     Working directory:      C:\TCPIP\UMAIL
  138.     Title:                  UltiMail/2 Lite    
  139.     
  140. UltiMail/2 can be started with a variety of undocumented command line
  141. options.  After examining UMAIL.EXE with a Hex editor, I have found these
  142. options:
  143.  
  144.     /U=<user>           the user ID is <user>
  145.     /PW=<password>      the password for the user ID is <password>
  146.     /PRO=<file>         use <file> as the profile file
  147.     /MIN                start minimised
  148.     /MAX                start maximised
  149.     /LOGO               display the UltiMail/2 logo at startup
  150.     /NOLOGO             don't display the UltiMail/2 logo at startup
  151.     /VGA                use only VGA resolution resources
  152.  
  153.     /LOGLEVEL=<level>   generate logging information according to the
  154.                         value of <level>, which can be one of:
  155.  
  156.                             C_FLOW          internal program flow
  157.                             INFO            information messages
  158.                             WARNING         warning messages
  159.                             ERROR           error messages
  160.                             OUTPUT          ??
  161.                             NONE            nothing
  162.  
  163.                         A value of <level> includes all of the categories
  164.                         above it (i.e. INFO includes WARNING, ERROR &
  165.                         OUTPUT, but not C_FLOW).
  166.  
  167.     /LOGDEST=<dest>     send the logging information to <dest>, which can
  168.                         be one of:
  169.  
  170.                             FILE        log to C:\TCPIP\UMAIL\UMAIL.LOG
  171.                             PM          log to a PM window
  172.                             FILEPM      combined FILE and PM
  173.                             NONE        no logging
  174.     
  175.  
  176. When UltiMail/2 starts up, it initialises itself using information from
  177. two sources:
  178.  
  179.     o   firstly, from the UltiMail/2 profile file specified by the
  180.         /PRO=<file> option, or C:\TCPIP\UMAIL\UMAIL.PRO if /PRO is not
  181.         specified
  182.         
  183.     o   secondly, from the hidden configuration file defined by the
  184.         PROFILE section of the UltiMail/2 profile file.  It usually looks
  185.         like this:
  186.  
  187.             :PROFILE       provider         = 'ADVANTIS'
  188.                            file             = 'C:\tcpip\ETC\TCPOS2.INI'
  189.                            .

  191.         This hidden file is created and updated by the IBM dialer
  192.         programs ("IBM Internet Dialer" or "Dial Other Internet
  193.         Providers" objects).

  197. 5. Configuring UltiMail/2 Lite
  198. ------------------------------
  199.  
  200. o   This section will configure UltiMail/2 to use only the profile file
  201.     to determine its setup.  Before you start, make sure that you save
  202.     these configuration files:
  203.  
  204.         C:\TCPIP\UMAIL\*.PRO
  205.         C:\TCPIP\ETC\SENDMAIL.UML
  206.         C:\TCPIP\ETC\*.INI
  207.  
  208. o   Make sure that the PPP/SLIP connection and UltiMail/2 are not running.
  209.  
  210. o   Copy the example files UMAIL.PRO and UMAILSRV.PRO that came with this
  211.     kit to C:\TCPIP\UMAIL.
  212.  
  213. o   Create a program object for UltiMail/2 with these parameters:
  214.  
  215.         Path and file name:     C:\TCPIP\UMAIL\UMAIL.EXE
  216.         Parameters:             /PRO=UMAIL.PRO
  217.         Working directory:      C:\TCPIP\UMAIL
  218.         Title:                  UltiMail/2 Lite    
  219.  
  220. o   Start UltiMail/2 from this freshly created object.  If you see a
  221.     pop-up box entitled "Not Connected to the Internet", click on the
  222.     "Don't connect" button.
  223.  
  224. o   If you see a pop-up box entitled "Accessing a network", make sure
  225.     that you have copied across the example profile files.
  226.  
  227. o   When UltiMail is a little over halfway through its loading process,
  228.     another pop-up box entitled "Accessing a Mail Server" will appear.
  229.     Since you're using SMTP, you should make sure that the four fields
  230.     contain these values:
  231.             
  232.         User ID:    yourid
  233.         Password:   *** must be empty ***
  234.         Server:     *** must be empty ***
  235.         Port:       110
  236.  
  237.     Don't change the "yourid" in the User ID field until you have
  238.     reconfigured UltiMail/2 at the next stage.  Click on the "Cancel"
  239.     button because you don't want to connect to a POP server.
  240.  
  241. o   When the Mail Cabinet has started, click on the "Cabinet" menu and
  242.     then the "Settings" item of that menu.  A typical OS/2 settings
  243.     notebook entitled "UltiMail - Settings" will appear.  The settings
  244.     will be for the mythical user ID "yourid" and you should change them
  245.     as summarised below.  (You can customise them to your heart's content
  246.     once it's all working, but please bear with me until it is.)

  301.         Select the right time zone information for your area.  For the
  302.         UK, this is:
  303.         
  304.         Time Zone:                  Europe - England
  305.         Switch to summer time:      Last Sunday of March
  306.         Switch to standard time:    Last Sunday of October        
  307.  
  308. o   Close down the settings notebook and the the UltiMail/2 Mail Cabinet.
  309.     UltiMail/2 should now be ready for use with SMTP.  
  310.     
  311. o   Restart UltiMail/2 from the program icon.  When the "Accessing a Mail
  312.     Server" pop-up box appears, the User ID field should now contain your
  313.     real e-mail user ID (as entered on page 1 of the settings notebook).
  314.     Click on the "Cancel" button because you don't want to connect to a
  315.     POP server.  Unfortunately, you can't stop this pop-up box appearing.
  316.  
  317.     The title bar of the Mail Cabinet should show your real name rather
  318.     than the previous string "Your Name".

  322. 6. Testing Your Setup
  323. ---------------------
  324.  
  325. o   make sure that the mail queue directory (C:\TCPIP\ETC\MQUEUE) is
  326.     empty
  327.  
  328. o   delete or rename the UMAIL.LOG and UMAIL.ERR files in C:\TCPIP\UMAIL
  329.  
  330. o   delete or rename the SENDMAIL.LOG and SENDMAIL.ERR files in
  331.     C:\TCPIP\ETC
  332.  
  333. o   make sure that the PPP/SLIP connection is NOT running, start UltiMail/2
  334.     Lite from the program icon and then open the In-Basket window.
  335.  
  336. o   Compose a message to yourself at your local mail address 
  337.     (e.g yourid@yourhost.your.domain) and send it.  You should see a
  338.     pop-up box entitled "Letter Sent or Queued Successfully" and the
  339.     In-box will chime soon afterwards as your message is delivered.
  340.  
  341. o   Now compose a message to an external "mail mirror" that will send
  342.     your message back to you.  A good example is "bouncer@nic.near.net".
  343.     Again, you should see a pop-up box entitled "Letter Sent or Queued
  344.     Successfully" but the message will not be delivered until the
  345.     PPP/SLIP connection and the sendmail daemon are started.
  346.     
  347.     If you have a look in the mail queue directory (C:\TCPIP\ETC\MQUEUE),
  348.     you should see two files called dfAAxxxx and qfAAxxxx, where xxxx is
  349.     a four digit number.
  350.  
  351.     The file dfAAxxxx contains your message and qfAAxxx is the control file
  352.     that contains the mail headers and other information.  It should be in a
  353.     similar format to this:

  378. o   make sure that the UltiMail/2 In-Basket window is still open, then start
  379.     the  connection and then the sendmail daemon (see section 3 above).
  380.     Just after the sendmail daemon starts, you should see a message in its
  381.     window saying that it has delivered a mail message to you and UltiMail/2
  382.     will chime shortly afterwards.
  383.     
  384. o   try sending some external mail messages to make sure that mail is
  385.     accepted from other hosts.  Three automatic ways spring to mind:
  386.     
  387.     o   send to a mail "mirror" that automatically replies to you.  The
  388.         only example that I know of is "bouncer@nic.near.net".
  389.  
  390.     o   send mail to yourself via another system using the "percent hack".
  391.         E.g. I can send to "kempson%snowyowl.com@post.demon.co.uk" to make
  392.         the mail go to post.demon.co.uk before coming back to me;
  393.         
  394.     o   send a "help" message to one of the Bitnet list servers.  E.g. send a
  395.         message to "listserv@hearn.nic.surfnet.nl" with a message text of
  396.         "help".
  397.     
  398.     Whichever method you use should result in a reply, possibly within a
  399.     minute if your network connection is lightly loaded.  When the reply
  400.     arrives, UltiMail/2 should chime again.

  403.  
  404. 7. Supporting more than one mail user
  405. -------------------------------------
  406.  
  407. UltiMail/2 can support incoming mail for more than one mail user ID, but
  408. you need to customise its profile for each user ID.  As an example, I'll
  409. assume that you want to support mail for John Smith (mail user ID:
  410. jsmith) and Alice Jones (mail user ID: ajones).
  411.  
  412. o   copy the reference UMAIL.PRO file to create a profile file for each
  413.     of the users:
  414.     
  415.         COPY C:\TCPIP\UMAIL\UMAIL.PRO C:\TCPIP\UMAIL\JSMITH.PRO
  416.         COPY C:\TCPIP\UMAIL\UMAIL.PRO C:\TCPIP\UMAIL\AJONES.PRO
  417.  
  418. o   Create a program object for each of the mail user IDs:
  419.  
  420.     For John Smith:
  421.         
  422.         Path and file name:     C:\TCPIP\UMAIL\UMAIL.EXE
  423.         Parameters:             /PRO=JSMITH.PRO
  424.         Working directory:      C:\TCPIP\UMAIL

  434. o   For each user, start UltiMail/2 from the appropriate program icon and
  435.     follow the steps in section 5 to configure it for that user's details.  
  436.  
  437. o   After configuration, you'll be able to double click on the
  438.     appropriate program icon and read/send mail as John Smith or Alice
  439.     Jones.
  440.  
  441. o   It is only possible to run one copy of UltiMail/2 at any one time.
  442.     
  443. o   When the PPP/SLIP link is running, you will only be able to open one
  444.     UltiMail/2 In-box folder to detect incoming mail for that particular
  445.     user.  The simplest way to look at incoming mail is to open the
  446.     sendmail daemon window - if you start sendmail with the "-d1.1"
  447.     option, it will log all incoming mail messages, but you won't get any
  448.     sounds :-(
  449.

  451.  
  452. 8. Frequently encountered problems (FEPs)
  453. -----------------------------------------
  454.  
  455. The most common problems encountered with UltiMail/2 are summarised below.
  456.  
  457.  
  458. When starting UltiMail/2, it presents a "Not Connected to the Internet "
  459. pop-up box.
  460.  
  461.     Your PPP/SLIP connection is not active and UltiMail/2 is offering to
  462.     launch the dialer program.  It's perfectly safe just to click on the
  463.     "Don't connect" button if you want to read or compose mail off-line.
  464.  
  465.  
  466. When starting UltiMail/2, it presents an "Accessing a Network" pop-up
  467. box.
  468.         
  469.     UltiMail/2 probably doesn't have enough configuration for the desired
  470.     user name.  You may not have started with the example profile files
  471.     provided with this kit.
  472.  
  473.  
  474. When starting UltiMail/2, it presents an "Accessing a Mail Server" pop-up
  475. box.
  476.             
  477.     UltiMail/2 is a POP mailer at heart and it wants to know the
  478.     information needed to connect to a POP server to collect your mail.
  479.     Since you're using SMTP, you should make sure that the four fields
  480.     contain these values:
  481.             
  482.                 
  483.         User ID:    <your e-mail user ID>
  484.         Password:   *** must be empty ***
  485.         Server:     *** must be empty ***
  486.         Port:       110
  487.  
  488.     Click on the "Cancel" button because you don't want to connect to a
  489.     POP server.  Unfortunately, you can't stop this pop-up box appearing.
  490.  
  491.  
  492. You can't change the UltiMail/2 settings because the "settings" menu is
  493. greyed out.
  494.         
  495.     UltiMail/2 probably doesn't have enough configuration for the desired
  496.     user name.  You may not have started with the example profile files
  497.     provided with this kit.
  498.  
  499.  
  500. You never get any incoming mail, even though other SMTP packages on your
  501. system can receive mail.
  502.  
  503.     You need to ensure that the sendmail daemon is always running while
  504.     your PPP/SLIP connection is running.  Details of running and
  505.     configuring sendmail can be found in the accompanying sendmail.txt
  506.     file.
  507.  
  508.  
  509. You never get any incoming mail, even though other SMTP packages on your
  510. system can receive mail.  People sending the mail to you receive error
  511. messages back from their mailers reporting failed delivery
  512.  
  513.     This is almost certainly a sendmail configuration error.  The most
  514.     likely cause is that the 'Cw' macro has not been defined in the
  515.     sendmail.uml file.  A possible other cause is a wrapped or
  516.     incorrectly defined 'Mlocal' line in sendmail.uml.  Details of
  517.     running and configuring sendmail can be found in the accompanying
  518.     sendmail.txt file.
  519.  
  520.  
  521. You never get any incoming mail, even though other SMTP packages on your
  522. system can receive mail.  What's more, the sendmail daemon is running and
  523. you can see the message coming in.  People sending the mail don't receive
  524. any error messages back from their mailers indicating a failed delivery.
  525.  
  526.     The most likely cause is that the path specifications in umailsrv.pro
  527.     are not correct for your setup.
  528.  
  529.  
  530. You never get any messages the "Received" mail folder.
  531.  
  532.     Incoming messages are always put into the "In-basket" mail folder,
  533.     which unfortunately, isn't opened automatically when you start
  534.     UltiMail/2 as a program icon.
  535.  
  536.  
  537. After sending a mail message, you receive a message from MAILER-DAEMON
  538. reporting a sendmail error 65.
  539.  
  540.     Sendmail couldn't connect to the destination host, even though it
  541.     thinks that the network is running.  The mail will be queued for
  542.     transmission later.  See the companion file sendmail.txt.
  543.  
  544.  
  545. After sending a mail message, you receive a message from MAILER-DAEMON
  546. reporting sendmail error 68.
  547.  
  548.     Sendmail can't resolve the IP address of the destination host,
  549.     usually because the DNS is unreachable (you're off-line) and the host
  550.     isn't in your HOSTS file.  The message will be bounced back to you.
  551.     See sendmail.txt.

  555. 9. What if it still doesn't work ?
  556. ----------------------------------
  557.  
  558. Unfortunately, there are many things that can go wrong with SMTP mail.  The
  559. clues will usually be found in the log and error files created by sendmail
  560. and UltiMail/2:
  561.  
  562.     C:\TCPIP\ETC\SENDMAIL.ERR
  563.     C:\TCPIP\ETC\SENDMAIL.LOG
  564.     C:\TCPIP\UMAIL\UMAIL.ERR
  565.     C:\TCPIP\UMAIL\UMAIL.LOG
  566.     
  567. It is possible to make sendmail and UltiMail/2 create large quantities of
  568. debugging information by specifying appropriate command line options.
  569.  
  570. Sendmail: start it with the "-d" option (see sendmail.txt for more
  571. details).

  573. UltiMail/2: start it with the command line options 
  574.
